.UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlvcE CONRAD HERWIG, JR., AND WILLIAM J. SPIELMAN, OF PIQUA, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE FAVORITE STOVE 8v RANGE COMPANY, 0F PIQUA, OHIO, AA. CORPORATION 0F OHIO RANGE oo usrnuerroivy Application led December 12, 1928. ySerial No. 325,514.`
The present invention relates to cooking stove or range constructions, particularly of the table range type, and aims to provide an assembly ot' the walls and bottom of the body 5 and the logs in such a manner as to conceal the bolts or other securing elements, to simplify the construction in attaching the legs to the body, and to increasethe rigidity of the construction.
The concealment ofthe bolts will leave the exposed outer surface smooth, so that the stove has a neater appearance and' may be more readily cleaned than when the bolts or other securing elements are exposed as -m ranges heretofore in use.`
' With the foregoing and other objects 1n view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides 1n the construction and arrangement of parts, as
hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made Within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention 1s illustrated in the accom- 25 panying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view of a cooking stove or range embodying the improvements, portions -being broken away and shown'in section.
F-ig. 2 isan enlarged horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the upper end por-V tion of one of the legs.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of one corner portion of, the base band. .i Fig. 6 is an elevation of the upper end por tion of a leg showing a modification. v 4 The body of the stove or range has the sheet metal walls 7 and -a sheet metal bottom 8, with which the legst) are assembled. The bottom 8 has a depending marginal flange 10 bearing against the inner surfaces of the walls 7 along the lower edges thereof.
In carrying out the invention, a base band 11, formed trom a bar of suitable' metal, 1s disposed below the bottom 8 at the inner surface of the llange 10 and serves to stiften an strengthen the base portion of the range body.
concealed base portion of the range body neater in ap- A sheet metal strip 12 is disposed between the front portions ol' the ilange 10 and band 11, and has a rearwardly extending flange 13 extending across the lower edge of the band 11. The frontvwall 7 has a similarly extending flange 14 at its lower edge extending be- ,y olts r`low the flange 13 and secured thereto by l5 or other securing elements.
Said bolts Ybeing disposed below the inturned'flanges 13 and 14: will not be exposed to view. The strip 12 and flanges 13 and 14 may be used at the sides or ends and back of the range body, if desired, but are more especially intended for the front ot the range.
At the back, and also at the sides or ends, if desired, the securing bolts or elements may pass directly through the band 11, flange 10 and walls 7. s The legs 9, which are usually of castiron,
have upstanding angular flanges 16 at-their upper ends which are fitted within the corner portions ot' the band'll, and bolts 17 clamp said flanges 16 to the band. Carriage bolts are preferably used and have square portions on their Shanks to lit in the square aper.
tures 21I of the band 11, to prevent the bolts from turning when the nuts are tightened thereon. The bolts have rounded heads 18, or other suitable heads, disposed between the band 11 and flange 10, and in order to pro-` vide a clearance between them to accommodate said bolt heads, the band 11 has offsets 19 beyond the flanges 16 of the legs, in order that the corner portions of the band are olfset inwardly, as seen in Fig. 2.
The bolts 17 as well as the bolts 15 are from View, thereby making the pearance than when the bolts are visible, and the stove is also more readily cleaned because the exposed surface thereofadjacent to the bolts is perfectly smooth.
The flanges 16 have upwardly opening vertical slots 20 to receive the bolts 17, so that when the bolts are loosened the legsv may be readily slipped into'. and out of enga ement with the band 11 and bolts 17, there y providing for convenientassembly and sepd arution of the legs and body'.
The terminals of the strip 12 project be- 6I legs fitting said band, and securing elements 130 yond the flange 13 and are clamped between fastening said legs to the band and concealed the bolt heads 18 and the band 19, thereby behind the walls of the body.
securing the strip to the band 1l and legs 16, 7. A range comprising a body, a base band so that the base structure is rigid. secured within the lower portion thereof,
lThe strip or .angle member -12 may be legs fitting said band', and securing elements 70 riveted, welded, or otherwise secured to the securing said legs and band together, said band 11, and in that event need not be enband being offset inwardly adjacent to the .ga edby the bolts l2 as shown. legs to accommodate portions of the securing s shown in Figo, the flange 16 of the leg element-s between the band and walls of the lo 9 may have horizontal slots 20 to receive the body. 75 bolts 17, although the slots 2O are preferable 8.
