Description

Nov. 5,I 1929. c, FISHER Y1,734,617
SAVINGS BANK Filed May 24. 1928 Patented Nov. 5, 1929 UNiTso CHARLES FISHER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE AUTOMATIC RECORD- ING- SAFE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS SAVINGS BANK Application filed May 24, 1928, Serial No. 280,231, and. in Great Britain April 24, 1928.
tween the extremities of the arms of the U- shaped closure and an internal reinforcing member with which the back of the savings bank is provided.
The present invention is in the nature of an improvement upon the savings bank described in my pending application Serial No. 220,222, filed September 17, 1927.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- F ig. l is a perspective view of a savings bank embodying the invention; Fig. 2,a plan sectional view on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3, a transverse section taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a perspective view of the removable closure which in the assembled structure corresponds with the edges of the leaves of a book.
In the construction illustrated, A designates the main body of the casing which corresponds with the sides and back of a book; B designates a removable closure which corresponds with the edges of the leaves of a book; and C designates a bolt, or locking-bar, slidably mounted in the closure B.
The body A of the casing comprises a sheet of suitable material, preferably a thin sheet of hard fibre which is so formed as to provide a back l and sides la; plates 2 disposed adjacent the inner surfaces of the sides la; and spacing-posts 3 uniting the sides la and inner plates 2 in the manner shown in Fig. 3. As there shown in dotted lines, the posts have reduced end-portions 3L extending through perforations in the side-members and plates and spun, or riveted, at the outer surfaces of the walls la. The posts thus have shoulders at 3b which bear against the inner surfaces of the plates 2. The plates 2 may be of hard fibre, if desired.
The plates 2 serve to reinforce the sidewalls of the body A. They are of smaller dimensions than the side-walls, or plates, of the body A, and their end edges 4c are adapted to serve as guides for the closure in the assembling operation.
The bodyA-preferably has'applied thereto a covering 5 of suitable fabric, such asv Cloth,
paper, leather, or the like; and preferably guard-studs 7 which are disposed alittle back4 of the front end-posts 3.
The closure Bgis of Uform, having the longitudinal edge-member 8 and end-.members 8a, as shown in Fig. 4. The U-shaped closure is of channel-form cross-section and its longitudinal member 8 houses the' slidable locking-bar C. Both of these parts preferably are made of strips of sheet brass stamped into suitable form, and the outer surface of the closure is in practice given a finish resembling the gilt edges of the leaves of a book.
The locking-bolt C comprises astrip which has its intermediate portion struck up or embossed to provide a wall 9 and flanges 9a. The flanges 9aare turned towards the main wall of the member .8 of the closure. Near the ends, the locking-bar is flattened as indicated at 9b, and the extremities are turned backwardly as indicated at 9, and then at right angle thereto as indicated at 9d. The points 9d eX- tend in the same direction and afford hooks which are adapted to engage the front endposts 3. The flattened portions 9b are con-l fined between guide-posts 10 and the main wall of the member 8 of the closure, as will be seen from Fig. 2. A spring ll serves to `throw the locking-bar tov locking position.
One of the end-members 8a of the closure is provided with a coin-slot 14 which is equipped with a slot-guard 14a which need not be de scribed in detail. Adjacent the coin-slot is a perforation 15 through which bills may be introduced.
It will be noted from Fig. 2 that the members, or posts, 't' serve to guard the hookportions 9(l of the locking-bar, against tampering, as by inserting an implement through the coin-slot 14C, or bill-hole 15.
The coin-slot device includes a plate 1G which is provided with. a slot and which is secured in position by means of clenching lugs 17 formed integrally with themember 8a. The plate 16is equipped at one end with an inwardly extending piece lL which serves as a. guard adapted to prevent coins from getting back of the adjacent end of the lockingbar. The portion 9C of the locking-bar is provided with a slot 18 through which the projection 16a may extend when the lockingbar is retracted. y.
. The locking-bolt C is provided at an intermediate point with laterally extending lugs 19 which are engaged by lugs 2O struck 1n wardly from the flanges of the member 8 of the closure. These lugs serve as guide-lugs and prevent the locking-bar from being sprung inwardly away lfrom the main wall of the member 8.
In accordance with the present invention, the iianges of the end-members 8a are pro vided at their free extremities with slots 8b which engage flanges with which an internal back-reinforcing plate 21 is provided at its ends. The plate 21 is in the form of a narrow strip which extends a little short of the full length of the back and which is secured to vthe back 1 by means of rivets 21a. The endportions of the bar 21 areturned forwardly to provide interlock flanges 2lb which are interlockingly engaged by the slots 8b when the closure C is inserted to close the savings bank. Thus, it is impossible to insert an implement at the extremities of the endmembers 8a for the purpose of springing the end-members outwardly.
' tmay be remarked also that the edges of the internal reinforcing plates 2 not only serve as guides for the closure, but they also prevent the insertion of an implement between the edge of the closure and the sidewall of the savings bank.
rEhe construction described is simple, easily manufactured, durable, and the product Vpresents an exceedingly neat appearance. The gu ard-posts 7 prevent the unauthorized manipulation of the locking-bar as by means of a button-hook7 or other implement.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom.
Vhat I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A book-form savings bank comprising a U-shape casing having its side-walls equipped at their inner surfaces with reinforcing plates; an internal reinfor ing strip secured to the back of said casing and having forwardly turned extremities affording interlock ianges; and a U-shape closure corresponding with the edges of the leaves of a book, said closure having inturned ilanges abutting against the edges of said reinforcing plates, the extremities of said flanges being provided with slots interloclringly engaging the flanges of said reinforcing strip.
