A still further object ofthe invention is to provide a novel and improved adjustable and collapsible window guard of the character described, which will be simple in construction, easily assembled and locked in place in a window frame, of varying Widths, readily removable and collapsed into a small and compact package for transporting the same from place to place, cheaply manufactured, and efficient in carrying out the purposes for which it is designed.
lVit-h the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel and improved features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, sizeand minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Stated generally, the invention comprises a pair of upright rods adapted to be positioned below the upper sash of a window frame and fitted in the grooves in which the said upper sash slides. The said upright rods are provided in their inner sides with a plurality of equally spaced openings in which are adapted to be received the ends of suitable laterally disposed rods, the free ends of said lateral rods extending to a point near the middle of the window, and mounted upon corresponding free ends of said lateral bars are adjustable sleeves provided with suitable set screws adapted forsecurely locking said sleeves on said lateral. rods. The set screws are only engageable by a suitable key for tightening and loosening the same, thereby preventing the unauthorized unlocking of said sleeves and thereby the removal of said grating. The whole of the above grating may be readily disassembled when not in use and collapsed to form a neat and compact package, which may be easily carried from place to place.
For the purpose of facilitating an understanding of my invention I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings a preferred emoperate in the usual manner.

Referring to thedrawings more specifically, the referencecharacter 1,.designates a win dowframe having a lower sash 2, and an upper sash 3. The rods 8, are of identical construction, shape and size and may, of course, be readily interchanged.
Mounted on the free inner ends of any pair of corresponding lateral or cross rods 8, is a sleeve member 10, said sleeve being adapted assembly, and many of v sleeve 10, and engage ece ve the ends of a corresponding pair ateral rods, and is slidably adjustable -0n. The sleeves 10, are laterally adjuste with respect to the lateral rods 8, by the lescoping of the free ends of said rods 8, it iin the sleeve 10, by means of which the rating is adjustableto fit window casings of arying widths.
For securing the grating in its lateral adj ustable position, there are provided on each of the sleeves 10, adjacent each end thereof a uitable set or look screw 11, each of which set screws is provided with a recess or depression 19., in its outer end or head, which recess may be of various shapes, whereby. a s ecial key will be required for loosening or tightening the said set screws, consequently, the set screws ll,cannot be loosened by an unauthorized person. The set screws 11, are adapted to extend through the wall of the the rod 8, for securely locking the sleeve on the rod 8, in the desired adjusted position.
In operation, the grating may be assembled in the window frame as follows: The vertical rods or bars 5, are disposed within the grooves l, of the window casing, with theopenings 6, therein, facing inwardly and towards each other. The crossrods 8, are then fitted into the said openings 6, and the sleeves 10, are then slipped over the inner ends of each pair of corresponding cross rods, and the set screws 11, tightened for securely locking the grating in place, said sleeves being disposed or positioned, so that the set screws therein will face towards the inside of the room, in which the window frame is located, thereby preventing anyone from the outside of the building to operate said screws. The grating is now in its fully assembled and adjusted position in the window casing and is securely locked therein, and when in this position it will be noted that the lower window sash may be lowered and raiser at will. ,To remove the grating, the set screws are loosened, by means of the special lrey provided therefor, the sleeves are then moved out of engagement with the inner ends of the rods upon which it is mounted, and the rods 8, then disengaged from the side members 5, and removed, after which the side rods 5, may be removed from the grooves The said rods 5, 8, and the sleeves 10, may easily be rolled into and formed into aneat and compact package which may be easily transported from place to place, or packed away into a minimum of space.
From the above it will be noted, that a noveland improvedwindow guard which is adjustable and collapsibleis provided, which will positively prevent entrance of an unauthorized person through awindow' into a building, and that the device-maybe readily and easily installed or removed byone autho ized to do so.
lt will also be noted, that the grating consists of a minimum of parts which may be readily interchanged, thus producing a device which may be cheaply and economically manut'actured.
It is believed that my invention, its mode of construction, and many of its advantages should be readily understood from the foregoing without further description; and should also be manifest that while a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described for illustrative purposes, the structural details are nevertheless capable of wide variation within the purview of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Vfhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A window grating comprising a pair of upright rods adapted to be fitted within the vertical grooves of a window casing, said up right rods being provided with a plurality of spaced openings of non-circular cross section on one face thereof, cross rods received within said openings and mounted between said upright rods, sleeves carried by said cross rods for adjusting the said cross rods to the required distance between said upright rods, and means associated with said sleeves for securely locking the said cross rods to said uprights in their desired adjusted position, said means being disposed so as to be operable from the inside of the window casing only.
2. A window grating of the character described, comprising a pair of upright mem bers adapted to be fitted within the vertical grooves of a window casing, said upright members being provided with a plurality of spaced openings of non-circular cross section, cross rods each having one of their ends received within one of said openings of one of said upright members, corresponding cross rods similarly mounted in the other of said upright members, the free ends of any pair of cross rods mounted in the same horizontal plane being spaced from each other, a sleeve for receiving the said free ends of any pair of corresponding cross rods and for spanning the distance therebetween, means associated with said sleeves for securely locking the same to the pair of corresponding cross rods upon which it is mounted, and also for locking said rods to said upright members, said means being operable only from the inside of said window casing.
3. A window grating of the character described, comprising a pair of upright members, a plurality of rods fitted in one of said members, and corresponding cross rods fitted in the other of said members cooperating means formed between said members and cross rods for preventing the rotation of said rods in said members, the free ends of each pair of corresponding cross rods being spaced from each other, said spaces being spanned by sleeves carried by said cross rods, and means associated with said sleeves for se between said ends,
curely locking said sleeves to said rods, and a special key for operating said last mentioned means.
4. A window grating of the character described, comprising a pair of upright members, the inner faces of which are provided with a plurality of spaced openings of noncircular cross section, a plurality of cross rods having one of their ends fitted in said openings, and corresponding cross rods having one of their ends fitted in the openings provided in the other of said upright members, the free ends of each pair of corrresponding cross rods being disposed within the same horizontal plane and spaced from each other, a sleeve mounted on said free ends and adapted for spanning the distance set screws extending through said sleeves adjacent each end there of for engaging the said cross rods, depressions in the heads of said set screws adapted for engagement by a special key for operating said set screws, and means formed on said rods for preventing the turning of the same when the said device is in fully assembled position.
