The invention relates to improvements in closures and more closures.
The invention has as one of its objects to provide a closure for containers distinguished by its simplicity of construction and operationwhich not only enhances its value mechanically but commercially as well.
My invention concerns itself more specifically, with that type of container known as the collapsible tube wherein the closure is not only permanently and hingedly mounted upon the tube, but is capable of rotation relative thereto to subject the closure to a sealing pressure upon the container, and to this end my invention contemplates a construction wherein the parts which serve to hingedly attach the closure upon the container are also utilized, upon rotation of the closure, to effect a firm and sealed seating of the closure in its closed position upon the container.
While in particularizing upon the advantages and features of the present invention particular stress has been placed upon the association of the closure with a collapsible container, and while the illustrative embodiment of the invention herein shown and described is adapted for use with such a container, nevertheless the objects of the invention may be accomplished with various other forms of containers and the invention therefore contemplates such an arrangement.
Many of the advantages and much of the commercial value and acceptability of the invention is attributed to the novel construction of the closure and the mounting thereof 11 on the container, these advantages being 0 tained particularly because of the simplicity of the device and the facility with which it 'may be assembled. The invention, therefore, depends for some of its advantages upon the specific details of construction illustrated and about tobe described.
Other objects and novel features of construction which contribute materially to the efliciency of the apparatus will be made more apparent as this description proceeds especially when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Figure 5; is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4;.
Referring now particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, it will be noted that there is illustrated a container 10 having a reduced neck portion 11 formed with a suitable opening 12 for establishing communication with the interior of the container. The neck portion 11 s is further provided'with a laterally extending projection or lug 13 and the diametrically opposed cam grooves 14 and 15. As shown 70 particularly in Figure Qthese grooves preferably extend circumferentially of the neck portion and terminate a suitable distance from each other forming the stops 16 and 17. The grooves are preferably, although not necessarily pressed into the neck portion 11 and are inclined to a corresponding degree in opposite directions.
For closing the opening 12 in the container 10 a cup shaped closure 18 is provided. As shown in-Figure 3 the skirt portion 18 of the closure is provided with a slot or aperture 19 for receiving the lug 13. In order to prevent any escape or removal of the closure from its described position upon the neck portion 11 the lug 13 is bent upwardly as clearly illustrated in Figure 2. The inner surface 13' of the projection 13 is s aced a suitable distance outwardly from t e periphery of the neck portion 11, and the length of the projection 13 is such that when the closure 18 is swung to closed position, the projection will assume a position exteriorly of the closure as clearly illustrated in Figure 1. In other words, the above construction is such that when the closure is swung to closed position, the wall 18 thereof assumes a position between the inner surface 13 of theprojection closure 11. Formed integral with the lower edge of the closure in diametrically opposed relation are the cam members 20 and 21' en-. gageable respectively in the cam grooves 14 and 15. As shown the cam member 20 is in direct vertical alignment with the aperture 19 and together with the lug 13 and the curved inner wall of the groove 14 serves to hingedly connect the closure ,to the container. To permit the cam member 21 to register with the groove 15 when the closure is swung to its closed position the neck portion 11 is formed yvith a slot 22 diametrically opposite the in order to insure a proper seal between the container and closure when the latter is in its closed position a cork disk 23 is non-removably secured in the closure, 18. Thus, when the container is not in use the contents thereof is efliciently preserved from the surrounding atmosphere.
Assuming that the closure is in the position shown in Figure 2 and it is desired to close the same the cap 18 is swung down upon the container, the cam member 20 actin as a pivot for the hinge and the cam mem ber 21 passes through the slot 22 into registration with the groove 15. As heretofore pointed out, when the closure is swung'to its closed position the lug 13 passes through the slot 19 and assumes a position exteriorly of the cap as shown in Figure 1 thus permitting the closure to be rotated in a clockwise direction and by virtue of the inclined cam grooves 14: and 15 the closure is subjected to a downward 7 pressure whereby the cork disk 23 will be compressed between the closure top and the top portion of the neck establishing a tight seal. The closure is prevented from excessive rotation in either open or closed position by means of the stops 16 and 17 From the foregoing it will be readily apparent that the herein described closure is permanently and hingedly attached to the conmember 20. Furthermore'the whole constructainer and the cam member 20 not only cooperates with the curved wall of the cam groove 14: to form a pintle for the hinge member 13 but also to subject the closureto a sealing engagement with the container. Thus a dual function may be attributed to the'cam tion lends itself to economy in construction, simplicity in operation and assembly.
While the invention has been described in connection with a closure for use with a collapsible container, it will be apparent that the inventionis broader than this in its scope and may be employed with equal facility upon various other forms of containers. Therefore reservation 1s made to make such changes in the details of. construction as may come within the purview of the accompanying claims.- i What I claim as my invention is: 1. The combination of a container having an opening therein and having oppositely inclined circumferentially extending cam grooves, a hinge member associated with one of said grooves, and a rotatable closure for said opening having inwardly extending cam members cooperating'with said grooves. upon rotation of the closure to subject the latter to a sealing pressure upon the container, one of said cam members co-acting with the hinge member aforesaid to exercise a hin e function for the closure in one rotatab e position thereof. 2. The combination of a container having an opening therein and having oppositely inclined clrcumferentially extending cam grooves, a rotatable closure for. said opening having cam portions and having a slot adjacent one of said cam portions, said cam portions being arranged to cooperate with the cam grooves upon rotation of the closure to subject the latter to a sealing pressure upon the container, and a member projecting from said container arranged to extend through the slot formed in said closure upon movement of the latter to open position to form a hinge therefor. v
3. In combination, a container having an opening therein and having an inclined groove adjacent to said opening, a member normally closing said opening having a cam portion engaging said groove, and a projection upon said container engageable with said cain portion to maintain the same in said groove in one rotative position of the closure "an d to cooperate therewith in another rotative position thereof to form a hinge for said clo-.

4. In'combination, a container having an opening therein, a closure normally closing said opening, means operable in one rotative position of the closure to subject the same to a sealing pressure upon the container, and an extension upon said container operable upon movement of the closure to open position to ture in one wall thereof adapted to register with the said projection upon a predetermined rotation of the closure, the said projection being so arranged as to project through the aperture'and cooperate with a portion of said closure to form a hinge therefor upon movement of the same to open position.
6. In combination, a container having an opening therein, a closure for said container having an aperture in one wall thereof, means permitting rotation of said closure upon said container, and a projection upon said contamer normally disposed exteriorly of the closure and adapted to project through the in the aperture aforesaid in one rotative position of the closure to establish a hinge connection between the latter and the container.
8. In combination, ,acontainer having an opening therein, a closure for said opening rotatab'ly mounted upon the container, said 7 closure having an aperture in one side wall thereof, and a projection u on said container adapted to register with t e aperture aforesaid to establish a hinge connection between the closure and container in one rotative position of the closure and in another rotative position of the latter to be out of registration with said aperture.
9. In combination, a container having a neck provided with an opening, and a substantially C-shaped lug projecting laterally from said neck adjacent to said opening, a
closure. for said opening including a rotatable cap having a skirt portion movable about the periphery of said neck and apertured to receive and move longitudinally of the lug aforesaid of said container to permit said cap to hinge upon said neck and uncover said opening.
10. In combination, a container having a neck portion provided with an opening, a closure for said opening including a cap rotatable upon said neck and movable in the arc of a circle in a plane at substantially right angles to the plane of rotation to uncover said opening, and a fixed part on the periphery of said neck extending over the outer face of said cap when it is in a osition to rotate upon said neck, and receiva le in an aperture of and constituting a hinge for said cap when it is moved in the arc of a circle as aforesaid.
