JOHN QHACE, F ADAMSDALE,
BOTTLE crosun'n- Application filed- May 11,
This invention relates to bottle closures of the type disclosedin my co-pendingapplication for United States Letters Patent Serial No. 17 7 ,1 17 filed-March 21st, 1927, of-which co-pending applicationthe present applica tionforms acontinuation, in part; As set forth inmy'above mentioned. co pending application, the-present invention re lates to sanitary bottle closures of that kind embodying a disk member adapted to be seatedwithin the mouth of the bottle, and a cap member carrying the disk member and having a marginal rimor flange adapted to fit over the mouth of the bottle to effectively prevent entrance of'dirt and otherlforeign matter into the bottle and consequent con-- tamination of the bottle=contents.
More particularly, the present application is directed to certain forms of bottle closures,
0 of the above kind'wherein'the cap member has a flat top wall, and'whereinmeans is provided for cooperation with said top wall topreven t nesting of the closures" when a plurality of the same are arranged in superimposed rela- -tion within the feed hopper of. a bottle capping machine, and wherein thecap member and disk are so associated as to provide for efiicient' application of the closure to the bottle i l 4 .1 r
' A further. ob ect 1s to provide a bottle closure characterized asabove, and so'constituted' asto provide for ready andeconomical'manufacture. V
The invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of-parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the ac companying drawings and claimed. i

Referring more in detail ito the drawings, the present bottleclosure' essentially embodies a cap member 5'having' a normally" flat top wallandprovided' with a dependingrim 6, a closuredisk 7 attached'to the underside of'said top wall, a circular part or ring 8 attached to'the underside of and depending from the top wall of the cap member 5, said" circular part or ring -8 being adapted to receive-thepressure ofta die inthe application Figure IO-and. having direct-pressure contact with the margin oft-he closure disk 7: as in? dicatedat 10. The-ring ordependin'g part: 8 is therefore located. above the marginali portion of the 'closured-isk 7 imposition to: enable disk 7 into proper seating contact with" the internal shoulder: 11 usually provided inthe mouth of the milk bottle 12'.
As the top wall; of the: capmember: 5. is; normally flat the" portion thereof; within. the ring 8is-inthe'same horizontal plane: with: the marginalporti'on of said topwallout:- wardly'ofs'the ring18. The closure disk7 is; providedinwardly of its. margin with ads the same horizontal plane with the lower edge of the rim 6 and adapted to rest upon the central portion of the top wall of the cap member 5 of another similarclosure disposed therebeneath for preventing nesting of said closures. It is thus apparent that a plurality of the closures may be readily placed in superimposed relation within the feed hopper 14 of a bottle capping and filling machine as shown in Figure 11, with the lowermost closure readily displaceable from beneath those disposed thereabove under the action of the usual ejecting plunger 15. Unhampered feeding of the caps successively from the bottom of the hopper for application to successive bottles is thus effectively insured.
A relatively small spacer disk 16 may be secured between the central portions ofthe top wall of the cap member 5 and the closure disk 7 in spaced concentric relation to and within the ring 8, thus enabling the contact pressure of the capping die to be directly transmitted from the center of the top wall of the cap member 5 to the center of the closure disk 7 whereby the closure may be caused to dish downwardly to the form of Figure 10, upon application of the closure to the bottle. In this way, most eflicient seating of the closure disk 7 within the mouth of the bottle is insured, with the closure disk under such tension as to resiliently :retain itself in place in a general manner Well known in connection with the ordinary bottle closure embodying merely a closure disk. This flexing will obvi -'ously be effected by providing the central provided for such attachment. However, the
ring 8 and spacer 16 are preferably glued or adhesively fastened to the underside of the top wall of the cap member 5 and have the closure disk 7 suitably fastened thereto. In each instance or form of the invention, the closure disk 7 is preferably provided with a peripheral locking'projection or annular flange as at 17 adapted to engage the seat 11 in the mouth of the bottle 12. It will be apparent that the circular connecting member or ring 8, which is preferably of card board, is open at the center, thus leaving the major portion of the disk7 free and unattached to the top wall of the cap me1nber'5, whereby the disk 7 is capable of beingreadily flexed downwardly as mentioned above and illustrated in Figure 10. The pressure applied at 9 over the ring 8 is at a point within the area of the opening of the milk bottle mouth, and the disk 7, being of slightly greater diameter than said opening, will be firmly seated and retained in place by the natural resiliency of the disk 7.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, the depending part 13 consists of a central circular depressed portion of a relatively thin disk 18 secured at its margin to the undersurface of the marginal portion of the closure disk 7.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 3 and 4, the depending part 13 is a circular central depressed portion of the disk member 7 itself, while in Figures 5 and 6, such depending parts consist in a plurality of studs 19 comprising small disksof cardboard secured by adhesive to and depending from the undersideof the disk member 7. I In the form of the invention shown in Figures 7 and 8, the construction is the same as shown in Figures 3 and t, except that the projecting marginal portion 20 of the closure disk 7 is directed upwardly in the form of an annular flange encasing and secured to the outer periphery ofthe ring or connecting member 8.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 9 and10, the construction is the same as shown in Figures 1 and 2, except that the dependin part 13 comprises a relatively thick disk 0 pasteboard secured centrally to the i underside of the disk member 7 andhaving a diameter considerably smaller than the latter.
Minor changes may be made without de parting from the spirit and vention as claimed.
What Iclaim as new is 1; A bottle closure including a cap member embodying a substantially flat top wall having a depending rim, a closure disk spaced from and attached to the under side of said top wall, and a circular ring located between and having direct pressure contact with said top wall and the margin of said closure disk, said ring being adapted to transmit the pressure of a die from the contiguous portion of the top wall to the margin of said closure disk in the application of the closure to the bottle, said closure disk being provided inwardly of its margin with a depending por tion located substantially in the same horizontal plane with the lower edge of the rim.
2. A bottle closure including a cap mem ber embodying a substantially flat top wall having a depending rim, a closure disk spaced from and attached to the under side of said top wall, a circular ring located between and scope of the inhaving direct pressure contact with said top wall and the margin of said closure disk,
said ring'being adapted to transmit the pres-' tle, said closure disk being provided inwardly latter in the application of the closure to the bottle.
3. A bottle closure including a cap member embodying a substantially flat top wall having a depending rim, a closure disk spaced from and attached to the under side of said top wall, a circular ring located between and having direct pressure contact with said top wall and the margin of said closure disk, said ring being adapted to transmit the pressure of a die from the contiguous portion of the top wall to the margin of said closure disk in the application of the closure to the bottle, said closure disk being provided inwardly of its margin with a depending portion located substantially in the same horizontal plane with the lower edge of the rim, said closure disk having a peripheral portion projecting outwardly slightly beyond the periphery of said ring.
4:. A bottle closure including a cap member embodying a substantially flat, top wall having a depending rim, a closure disk spaced from and attached to the under side of said top wall, and a circular ring located between and having direct pressure contact with said top wall and the margin of said closure disk, said ring being adapted to transmit the pressure of a die from the contiguous portion of the top wall to the margin of said closure disk in the application of the closure to the bottle, said closure disk being provided inwardly of its margin with a depending portion located substantially in the same horizontal plane with the lower edge of the rim, said closure disk having a central depressed part forming said depending portion.
In testimony whereof I mix my signature.
