WITNESSES INVENTOR ydilheggy'kr? ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 29, I929 GLOYD Ill. snrrnnr, or IHOLYOKE, COLORADO COMBINED STARTER SWITCH AND onoxn Application filed February 4, 1 929. SerialNo. 337,361. i H
My invention is a combined starter switch and choke for motor vehicles and an object of the invention is toprovide a device which will (serve as the usual'chokerod and as a circuit closer for controlling an electrical circuit to the usual starter.
Further the invention provides a device of this character which will permita circuit to the starter to be completed Without choking the carbureter; permit the usual chokevalve to be adjusted to any desired position while the motor is in operation; and it may also be operated to actuate the choke valve to full open position prior to completion of the starter circuit.
With the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, constructions andarrang'ement of parts and operations to be hereinafter specifically referred to, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein;. I
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical section view of part of a motor vehicle with my invention associated therewith;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, the broken lines indicating the device in full choking position; and
\ Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2;
drical casing is provided comprising a pair a cup-shaped member 7 at its outer end. An-
nular flanges 8 are formed on each of the: g I
ing electrical "connection with" the usual starter, not shown, are connected w th one sections and extend circumferentially around the same.
To secure the casing'in place a plurality of bolts 9 extending longitudinally of the casing pass through the flanges at spaced intervals and through the usual dash board 9. Pairs of jam nuts 11 are threaded upon'the 15 bolts and engage the opposite faces of the flanges. 'Similar nuts 11 arealso threaded upon the bolts and engage the inner face of the dash board. I v
A substantially frusto-conical hood 12is arranged in longitudinal alignment with the casing and is provided with'an annular flange 13 at its inner end which is secured toy'afsimilar annular flange 14 formed on theadj-acent end of the cup-shaped member 7 of the section 6. A forwardly extending tubul'ar9 5 guide 15 extends from the forward end of the hood through which the usual choke valve operating cable 16 extends. j f f A choke rod 17 extends centrally and lon-. gitudinally through the casing and is slid-' ably supported by the end walls of the "cupshaped members. One end of the choke rod extends into the hood 12 and is connected with the cable 16 by a coil spring 18;" The opposite end of the choke rod passes through the dash board is equipped with theusual operating handle 19.
a contact plateor switch member '20 isfre-Fm ceive d on the choke rod at a point within'the confines of the casing and is secured thereto by Washers 21 suitably held onthe chokerod and engaging the opposite faces of'the' t'zontact plate. j Suitable insulation 23 is provided 'for insulating the contact plate from W er'21 and choke rod. I
A pair of spaced contacts 24 project'from theinner face "of the end wall of each oftlie cup-shaped'members 7 and are suitably ins latecl' "therefrom by insulating material I 25 Referring to the invention in detail a cylin- I which alines the cup-shapedimembers. The
contacts 24 are formed with binding posts .2 6 of tubular sections 5 and 6 having telescopic '35 engagement and each of which is formed with "and are connected together in series by conductor wires27, A pair of feed Wires 28 hav- Pair Of "thebinding Posts us. withitheao choke rod in either of its extreme positions the contact plate 20 will engage onepair'of thecontacts 24 to complete an electricalcir- "cuit'through the starter.
With my. invention will be observed that' os the circuit to the starter'will' be completed 7 upon longitudinal movement of the chokerod in either directiorip Thus upon forward thrust of the choke red the circuitto the starter will be completed without choking the ca-rbureter. In choking the' carbureter the contact plate will complete the circuit subsequent to the full choking of the carbureter. That is to say, when the parts reach the broken line position shown in Fig. 2 the choke valve will have reached its full open position so that upon continued movementof the choke.
rod the circuit to the starter will be com- 'pleted. These operations are possible by reason of the elastic or spring connection 18 between the choke rod and cable 16.
For the purpose of retaining the choke rod against rotation so that the contact plate 20 will always be in longitudinal alignment with the spaced contacts Qtap'airof parallel guide bars 29 are supported longitudinally within the casin from one of the cup-shaped mem i'bers '7.
IY'What 1s clai'med'is:
1]. In a combined choke actuating'device s particularly disclosedin'Fig. 3 these guide bars 29 are located upon opposite sides of the'cho'ke rod and pass through Slot 30 in the contact plate. Thus the choke rod and contact true longitu (plateQO will always move inja inal direction and at the same time be prevented from rotating.
and circuit closer, a support, pairs of longitudinally aligned spaced contacts, a choke slidable on the support, and a' contact "member carried thereby and engageable with either pair of contacts.
2. In a combined chokeactuating'device and circuit closer, a support, pairs of longiitudinally aligned spaced contacts, a choke rod slidable on the'support, a contact member carried'thereby and engageable with either "pair of contacts, and an elastic element connected with one end of the chokerod and operating cable.
