UNITED STATES LUBRICANT-'DISPENSING DEVICE Application mea November 29,1927.
The invention relates to a lubricant dispensing device, and has for its object to provide a device of this character particularly adapted for use in garages, and provided with a plurality of receptacles having pistons therein, which pistons are provided with rack bars, with which a rotatable gear meshes whereby upon rotating said gear one piston will be `iforced downwardly, and the other piston simultaneously moved upwardly, whereby when rlubricant is discharged from one cylinder, it may be sucked into the yother cylinder for a subsequent dispensing operation.
A further object is to provide a supply pipe leading from a lubricant supply tank and having branch pipes through either of which lubricant may be directed to either of the dispensing cylinders. Also to provide discharge pipes leading from the cylinders.
A further object is to form the cylinders from transparent material whereby the liquid level therein may be observed, and to provide said cylinders with graduations whereby the amount oit lubricant in the cylinders may be easily ascertained.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth,
shown in the drawing, described and claimed,
it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. o
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device, parts being shown in section to better illustratel the same.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through another form of cylinder wherein a piston is controlled by a piston rod.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a base, which base has mounted thereon flanged cylinder bases 2 iny which are disposed the lower ends of transparent cylinders 3. Cylinders 3 aref' preferably formed .trom glass and provided with graduations/l,
ySerial No. 236,457.
whereby they amount, of, lubricant therein maybe jascertained'kkat all times'. Disposed on theiupper endsof thecylinders 3 is a4 iiangedcap', ,forming a closure Jfor the up-` per endsof ,thecylinders, and slidably mount# ed within the` ,cylindersare pistons `6, which pistons are provided with upwardly eXt-end-` ing ypiston' rodshaving racks 8 on their in# neradjacent sides. yi
r/Eittending upwardly from thejc'api 'is a e0 y bracket 9 in the arms 10ho'f which the piston, rods 7` `are slidably mounted, yand rotatably mounted in the upper end ,of thebracket 9 is atransversely disposedshait 11 having a gear i; 12 thereon, which geary meshes with the racks 65 8 ,therefore it will be seen that when the operator graspsfthe handle member 13 and ro-t tates the gear 12, one of said piston rods and pistons will be forced downwardlyy and at ,l
the same time the other piston andpiston rod 7,0 i
vwill beforcedupwardly, and as a result of this operation lubricant within one of the cylinders will beforced outwardly through its discharge pipe 14 while lubricant will be sucked into the other ,cylinder through the lubricant sup- 5" ply pipes 15 according to which piston isornov-k ing upwardlygtheret'ore it will be seen that when the lubricantisdispensed from one cylinder, the othercylinder will be automatically illed, consequently f a constant lubricant ed supply `is maintained for dispensing purposes.
Discharge pipes 14 Lare preferablyprovided with Valves 16 .for regulatingthe amount of lubricantand speed of delivery.
Supply rires 115 17 ot' a three way valve 18 and a pipe 19'is connected to the casing 17 and'leads to a lubricant storage tank 20, and it will be seen by referring to Figure 1, ysaid three wayr valve y18 W is inposition where upon upward movement of one ot the pistons 6, lubricant will be sucked into its cylinder 8, 'as the rlubricant is discharged from the other cylinder 3,`and after f the lubricant is discharged from the cylinder that is filled, the threeway valve is rnanipu-v lated whereby lubricant will be'suclred into the emptied cylinder upon upward movement of its'piston. The cap 5 is preferably provided with an air vent 21 whereby air may eX-y haust from the upper ends of the cylinders, 10o
,PATENT tori-"ICE are connected tothe casingl sa thereby preventing the same from becoming air bound. Tank 20 is also provided With an air vent 22 for allowing passage of air during the filling of the tank and the pumping of lubricant therefrom, thereby preventing the same from becoming airbound or the formation of vacuum in said tank as lubricantis pumped therefrom,
Referring to Figure 3 a hand operated device is shown, Which device operates subst-anv-y tially the same as one ofthe cylinders shown in Figure l and has its piston 6a provided with aV piston rod 7, and whichpiston rod is adapted to be forced downwardly for discharging lubricant fromwther cylinder 3* through the discharge pipe 14a. In this form a coiled spring'' is provided Vwhich surrounds the piston rod 7a and is interposed between the a and the piston 61a, thereby assistingwin forcing the piston downwardly for discharging lubricant from the cylinder, From the "aboveit wvill be seen that a lubri cant dispensing deviceisprovided Which particularly adapted for usel in'dispensing lubricant in garages and the like, and one wherein not only the operator but the pur-` chaser may rsee the amountof lubricant *discharged into a crank casing or other point of discharge; 39 The invention having been set forth What is claimed as newv and useful is :v
` A lubricant dispensing device comprising adjacent cylinders formed from transparent material, discharge pipes carried by the lower ends of said cylinders, a lubricant supply pipe,
branch lubricant supply pipes, valve means carried by said supply pipe at its point of connection ivith the branch pipes andfornjing means whereby lubricant may be directed Q through either branch supply pipe or simul- V taneously drained from both of said cylinders, Y
pistons Within said cylinders,'piston rods car-f i'ied by said pistons, said piston rods having their @Climent sides provided Withracls, 45 bracket supported by the cylinders, Said pisf ton rods being slidably mounted in bearings of the bracket, and an'operating gear carried by said bracket andmeshing with the racks'.
