IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINEDCANE AND FLAG.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17 3,330, dated February 8, 1876; application filed 'January 7, i876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM It. PARK, ot' Philadelphia, in the county of PhiladelphiaJ and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gombined Gane and-Flag; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the yart to which it pertains to make and use it,reterence being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a broken vertical section., showing the Hag concealed. Fig. 2 is a broken vertical section, showing the ilag nnfurled.

The object otl my improvements is to simplify the construction and lessen the cost of a combined cane and Hag, such as shown `in Letters Patent No. 169,918, dated November 16, 1875, issued and granted to Ine.

These improvements consist, essentially, in dispensing withthe spring shown in said patent, substitutingv therefor a simpler def vice invd'lving a less laborious and expensive method ot fastening theiiag-sta" in the cane than is shown therein.

Referring t-o the accompanying drawing, A designates arcane made hollow the whole or a portion of its length for the reception of the flag-statt' B. C represents the handle or top otthe cane, which, in `the iirst instance, is made separate from the cane, but is not intended .to be detached from the latter after it has been once applied thereto. The handle C is formed with a central aperture or opening, c, for the passage. ot' the stal B,

which is'provided at its lower end with a tapering plug, c1, and at its upper end with a ball, c2.

When the tlag and stal-It' are inserted in the cane, as shown in Fig. 1, the cane being then ,designed for use as a walking-stick, the ball 02 rests in a cavity, d, in `the upper part of the handle C, in such manner that it will not interfere with the convenient grasping ot' the latter, while, atthe same time, it may be readily taken hold ot' for withdrawing said stati' from its concealed position.

The flag-statt' is xed in the handle of the cane by drawing it out from the latter until the tapered plug c1 becomes wedged in the opening c. To conceal the flag in the cane it is tlrst furled, and its statt' simply pushed down into the latter.

This construction, it will be observed, dispenses with the spring shown in my aforesaid patent, substituting therefor a simpler and less expensive devite. In said patent, when the iag was exposed, the top of the cane was withdrawn, and had to be carried in the hand onpocket. This, in the case of a cllilds cane and flag, is somewhat objectionable, as the detached handle, under such circumstances, was likely to become lost or misplaced. With my present improvement this objection is removed, for the'head or top, after being' once applied, is not designed to be taken o" at all.

What I claim as my invention is 1. The flag-statt' B, provided with a tapering plug or Wedge, c1, t'or fastening said staff in the cane when the flag is exposed to view, substantially as shown and described.

2. The cane head or handle C, when formed with an opening, c, for the passage of the staft'.

3. The combination of the cane A, having a lixed handle, C, formed with an opening for the passage ot' the flag, with the stai' B,- having a fastening device, c1, substantially as shown and described.

4. The handle C, having an opening, c, and cavity d, in combination with the stal'B, provided with aball, ci", substantially as shown and described.

5. A combined cane and iiag,in which when the latter is exposed it is held in position by having the end of its staff fastened in the head or top of the former.

6. The cane A, having the fixed handle C, with opening c and cavity d, and the flagsta'tf B, having the plug or wedge c1 and ball c2, substantially as shown and described.

7. A combined cane and iiag, in which the latter may be concealed within'the former, and'which permits the flag-statt to be drawn out without removing the cane head or top.
