UNITED STATES PATENT OEEtcE JOHN HEERMANS AND HORACE S.
REED, OF ooanme, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN STbNE-SAWING MACHINE S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,283, dated February 8, 18%6; application filed i January-8, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN HEERMANS and HORACE S. REED, of Corning, in the countyof Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Stone-Sawing Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part. of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are representations of vertical sections of our stonesawin'g machine, and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view of thesame.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement ofcertain improvements upon, the stone-sawing machine for which Letters Patent N 0. 151,286 were granted to us May 26, 1874, as will be herein- In the annexed drawing, A A represent the four corner-posts of the main frame of the machine, upon the inner sides of which are secured vertical way-irons or guide-bars a a. On each of these way-ironsis placed a grooved bar or corner-iron, B, carrying upon its inner side a wheel orroller, b. The two irons B, at
of a rod or bar,-;O, which, in a full-sized working machine, isto bema'de adjustable lengthwise, so as to adjust the grooves of the cornerirons-B exactly to the'vertical way-irons a. The bars or irons B are suspended by means for the same purpose, as described for the supporting-frame in our former patent above re Witnesses:
ferred to. On the rollers or wheels 11 the sawframe E is moved back and forth in the usual manner. This frame is, on each side underneath, at each end, provided with concave bearing irons or ways G, which are the same as in our former patent, except that formerly they were attached to a frame, now dispensed with, and worked underneath the rollers, whereas they are now attached to the sawframe and work on top of the rollers. To each of the corner-irons B is pivoted an arm, h, which extends upward, and has a lever,.I, pivoted at its upper end. This lever is grooved to fit over the way-iron a, and has a weight, H, formed on, or attached to,*its inner end, thus forming an automatic stop, to prevent the reaction or bounding of the corner-irons.
It will readily be seen that the pressure up- 1 ward cramps the lever over the way -iron, so that it cannot rise, while it is free to descend as the machine feeds downward.
In the drawing we have only shown one of these devices but it is, of course, to be un-' derstood that in a fullsized machine there is one 011 each corner of the frame.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the way-iron a and corner-iron B, of the arm h, grooved lever I, and weight H, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony thatwe claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
- JQHN HEERMANS. HORACE S." REED.
