Description

Oct. 22, 192 9 w w, slmMgNs 5R 1,732,777 I DISPLAY FIGURE OR STAND Filed April 15. 1927 John Doe Socks IIIIHHUIIHIIIHIIHI llliilll I" Patented Get. 22, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DISPLAY FIGURE OR STAND Application filed April 15,
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved display stand having the appearance of a human being or of an animal, provided with extremities of grotesque appearance for supporting the goods, for instance inens hosiery, in such fashion that the attention of passers-by will be directed to the stand because of its unusual appearance.
A practical embodiment of the invention comprises the standing or sitting figure of a man, Woman, or child whose hands are of greatly increased size and grotesque appearance and serving as a support of the goods to be displayed, or, the stand may assume the outline of an animal standing on its hind legs and having the paws of its forelegs of great ly enlarged size and grotesque appearance.
The torso of the figure may be provided with advertising matter directing the attention to the goods displayed from the racklike extremities.
The invention is carried out by the provision of greatly enlarged fingers or claws which are jointed to a grotesque simulation of a Wrist and the wrist, in turn, is ointed to an articulated system of pieces serving as the arms or forelegs of the figure. A suitable covering to represent the dress of a human being, or the body of an animal, is provided to cover up the articulated system of parts but to leave exposed the greatly enlarged hands or paws.
The joints connecting the fingers to the Wrist part of the figure can be varied and so may the type of joint between the wrist parts and the simulated arm or foreleg parts, and other changes be resorted to without departing from the essential features of the invention, a practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1, is a front elevation showing the improvements in connection with the figure of a man who is in standing position;
Fig. 2, is a detail view of the improvements by themselves and Fig. 3, is a detail view of one of the fingers.
While I have illustrated the use of the invention only in connection with the use of a figure of a man, it is to be understood that the and rods or fiat pieces or strips 3 representin 1927. Serial No. 184,159.
claims are intended to cover either the figure of a man, woman, child, or animal.
The figure 1 of the man which is shown in 1, may be dressed in any style and the body thereof may be of any construction preferred. Any of the well-known models in store windows or other places may be employed for this PUI'POSQQS my improvements relate to the hands and arms of the figure, if it be that of a human being, or, the forelegs and paws of the animal if the figure be that ofan animal.
The parts which represent the hands comprise "a c1.'oss-niece '2 representing the wrist,
the fingers. These maybe suitably painted or treated to simulate the knuckles, nails, and general appearance of fingers. The fingers are pivoted at 4L to the wrist 2, such pivots being rivets but other pivots maybe used.
The arms which are coveredby the coat sleeves 5, comprise upper arm sections 6, lower arm sections 7, and any suitable hinge or joint 8 connecting said sections so that they are articulated to permit bending as may be desired. The sections 7 are jointed at 9 to the wrist parts 2. Ordinarily, hinged joints may be used but I prefer to provide ball and socket joints so that the hands may be moved to any desired position, upwardly, downwardly, or laterally. The ball and socket joint permits many grotesque inclividual, and relative, positions of the hands to enhance the striking appearance of the figure.
The sections are hinged at 10 to the frame or back piece 11 of the body of the figure.
The front of the figure may be provided with signs 12 directing attention to the advertiser and the goods he is displaying. Any suitable placards may be used for that purpose, or, the body of the figure may have a special sign holder.
I have illustrated mens socks at 13 to show how goods may be suspended from the fingers 3, said fingers constituting racks for the display of any merchandise susceptible of hanging from said fingers.
. When my improvements are provided in connection with a figure of an animal, the
equivalent of the fingers 3 will be the paws or claws or the forelegs of the animal and said forelegs will comprise parts similar to the parts 6, 7, 2, and 9, which have been described.
What I claim is:
.In an adjustable stand, the combination with a frame or back piece adapted for connection to any suitable supporting means therefor, of a pair of arms, each arm comprising a plurality of sections hinged or jointed together to enable the respective sections to assume different angular relationships to each other one end section of each of said fpairs of arms being hinged or jointed to the ame or back piece at different points thereof, thereby enabling the sectional arms to be moved as a unit toward or away from each other aside from the adaptability of the sections thereof to assume different angular positions in relation to each other, independent cross pieces, each having a universal joint connection to the remaining end section of the arms to enable said cross pieces to assume any angularposition in relation to said arms, and a group of strips carried by each cross piece, the respective strips being independently pivoted in the same general plane to the cross piece which carries it, in side by side relationship, enabling the strips to be made to assume different spread or contracted positions in relation to each other irrespective of the angular position of the cross piece or of the arm whlch carrles said cross piece.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. WILLIAM WALTER SIMMONS, SR.
