My invention relates to regulator systems and more particularly to means for modifying the Operation of a regulator upon the occurrence of abnormal power-circuit conditions.
The object of my invention is to provide means for modifying the regulator action during short-circuit conditions on the power circuit to suppress an arcing ground and ,to aid in re-establishing normal conditions.

Figure l is a diagrammatic view of one embodiment of my invention using a third magnet for varying the regulator spring tension, and
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic view of another embodiment of my invention using a compensating transformer to introduce a voltage directly into the regulator control circuit.
Referring to the drawing, a generator 1 is 7 connected to a power circuit 2, 3, 4 and is provided with a field winding 5 that is connected to an exciter generator 6. The exciter generator is provided with a field winding 7 that is connected to be energized from the armature of the exciter and is prm'ided with a resistor 8 in circuit therewith.
The resistor 8 is adapted to be SllOIt-Cifcuited through the contact members 9 and 10 of a relay 11, which is operated in accordance with the operation of the regulator contact members 12 and 13. The contact member 13 is carried by an arm 15 of a bell crank lever 16 and is operated in accordance with the pull of a control electromagnet 17 that is balanced by the weight 18. The lever 16 is pivotally mounted upon the lower arm of a bell crank lever 19, which is connected to be actuated in accordance with the operation of an antihunting electromagnet 21 against the pull of a spring tension member 22. The electromagnets 17 and 21 are provided with potential windings 23 and 24, respectively, which are connected to the transformer 25 i; to be energized in accordance with the porelay 29 that is operated in accordance with tive value of the resistor 8 and the excita tion ofthe generator 1 in a well-known mannor. 1
To the lower end of the bell crank lever 19 one end of a tension member'31, which is adapted to supplement the action of the tension member 22, is attached. The other end of the tension member 31 is attached to an arm 32 of a bell crank lever 33 that is actuated in accordance with the operation of an electromagnet 34. The electromagnet 34 is provided with a winding35 that is connected in parallel relation-to three current transformers 36,37 and 38, which are respectively connectedto the three phases of the power circuit 2, 3, 4. v
In the form of invention illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, a compensating transformer 39 is provided having its primary winding 41 energized from the current transformers 36, 37 and 38 and having its secondary winding 42 connected in circuit with the control magnet winding 23.
The operation of the regulator system is as follows: During the normal operation of the line, that is, during balanced phase conditions of the power circuit, the currents flowing in each of the conductors 2, 3, 4 will be equal and the vector displacement of these currents will be symmetrical, so that the currents flowing through the transformers 36, 37, and 38 will neutralize each other and no current will flow through winding 35 of the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1, or through the winding 41 of the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2.
Upon the occurrence of a short-circuit in any phase of the system, howeveiyan abnormally high current will flow in that phase and the resultant of the currents traversing the three phases will cause current to flow through the winding 35, thus increasing the tension of the spring member 31 and tending to maintain the contact members 12 and 13 in a disengaged position. Since a lesser energization of the control magnet Winding 23 is required, under this condition, to cause engagement of the contact members 12 and 13, increasing the tension of the spring member 31 causes the regulator to reduce the voltage of the exciter 6 and of the =generator 1 until the fault has been removed, under which condition the winding35 will be (lo-energized andtlie tension of the spring31 will return to its normal condition. The regulator will then continue to operate in a welkknown manner, the windings 23 and 24 being energized from the voltage transformer 25 to maintain the desired predetermined voltage upon-the; ,power circuit.

'It will be-seen, therefore; that in the form of the inventioni'llustrated in Fig. 1, the energization .ofathe regulator magnets is varied :by varying the :pull. of; the tension member-balancing: the .magnets, \while; in the form of invention illustratedinr-Eig-Q, the energization of the regulator magnets -is varied by introducing-a voltage-directly into the regulator control circuit.

I claimas my invention 1. 'Ina regulator system, a powercircuit, a generator-connected to said power circuit, a regulator for said generator, 'means for energizing said regulator inaccordance with an electrical quantity of saidpower circuit, an clcctromagnetconnected to said regulator and operative when energized to modify the operation of said regulator, andmeans for energizing said electromagnet upon the occurrence of a short circuit on said power circuit.
2. In a'regulat-or system, a power circuit, a generator connected to said power circuit, a regulator -for said generator, means for energizing said regulator in accordance with an electrical quantity ofsaid power circuit, an electromagnet connected to said regulatorand operative when energized to modify the operation of said regluator, and means for energizing said electromagnet upon the occurrence of unbalanced power-circuit conditions.
