l l l Arn'r IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SLATES AND DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,269, dated February 8, 1876; application filed January 14, 1876. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. OHINNooK,
.of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Combined Slates and Desks, of Which the following is a specification This invention relates to that class of educationa-l appliances in which a slate is so comheld in proper position, but whereby the said slate is caused to retain the tablet in its place,
thereby providing a simple, cheap, conven-.
ient, and easilymanufactured article of the class specified.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a combined slate and desk made according to myinvention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same taken in the line a of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View ofthe same taken in the line y of Pig. 1-that is to say, in a plane at right angles to Fig. 2.
i A is the desk, made of wood or other suitable material, and with its top of the ordinary or any preferred slope. This top is covered by the slate B and the tablet O, which are provided as follows: Upon the back of the top of the desk A is a rim, a, the end portions of which (that is to say, the portions at the sides or lateral edges of the desk A) are grooved in their inner surfaces, as shown at at. These grooves a form guides for the tablet O, the ends of the tablet being thrust into the grooves a, as represented in Fig. 2, while the rear edge of said tablet rests against the back part b of the rim a, which thus forms a stop to hold the tablet from slipping or being pushed off from the back of the desk. Upon the front of the desk A is a longitudinal ledge or shoulder, 0. The forward ends a of the rim aform, as it were, other ledges or shoulders, the position of which, as concerns 0, is more plainly shown in Fig. l. The slate B is placed upon the top of the desk in front of the tablet O, and between the ledge c and the ledges a, as represented in said Fig.1.
From this it will be seen that the ledges or shoulders c and to retain the slate B in place upon the desk, while the slate, being in front of the tablet O, prevents the same from slipping forward out of the grooves or guides at, the tablet being thus securely held in place.
The shoulders or ledges a should be of curved contour, as indicated in Figrl, in order to lap around the rounded corners b of the slate B, thereby preventing lateral as well as backward and forward movement of the slate.
The slate B has the frame 01, and this frame being against the front edge of the tablet O, and rising above the surface of the same, as well as above that of the slate itself, keeps the water, 850., used in washing the slate, or, in other words, used in obliterating pencilmarks thereon, from flowing or passing to the tablet U, to injure or deface the same.
The upper surface of the tablet O is to be provided with figures, letters, words, pictures,
or designs of any character desired for reproduction in pencil upon the slate by the hand of the pupil or person using the apparatus.
By lifting the slate from the desk not only is easy access afforded to the interior of the latter, but the removal of said slate permits the withdrawal of the tablet 0 from its guides or grooves a, and its replacement by another bearing different letters, figures, 850.
Any desired number of tablets may be provided and kept within the desk until required to be placed in the grooves or guides aforesaid in the actual use of the apparatus.
What 1 claim as my invention is- The desk A, constructed with the ledges or shoulders c a, and the rim a, provided with the grooves 11., in combination with the slate B and tablet O, the whole combined for conjoint use and operation substantially as set forth. a
