Description
`WI'I'NESSES v INVENTUB ATTGBIIEYS.
UNITED STATE/s vPrruazNT A OFFICE.L
EDWARD-A. GOODELL, OF TEGUMSEH, KANSAS.'
IMPROVEMNT IN CAR-COUPLINC-IS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [73,219, dated February 8, 1876; application led October 16, 1875.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. GOODELL, of Tecumseh, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Car-Coupling, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved car-coupling, and Fig. 2 a front view of the draw-head.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-v sponding parts.
The invention consists in using a reciprocating stirrup held up by a ring, which is pivoted to its top, and held in a groove of the drawhead.
1n the drawing, A represents a draw-head of the customary shape, which is provided at the bottom with a central hook, B, that is curvedr inclined to guide the entering link gradually over the hook, and drop it then back ofthe same into its concave or indented rear part. An interior groove or recess, a, at the lower rear part of the draw-head, serves for the purpose of retaining the link in hori- Azontalpposition for coupling. A verticallyslidingY stirrup, C, is guided in top holes of the draw-head back of hook, and seated, when dropped, in a bottom recess,'b, immediately back of the hook. The stirrup C is raised by a bail, D, pivoted to its outer ends, and suitable lever, cord, or other uncoupling mechanism.
A central tongue or lug, d, isl applied at the .center ot the lower part of Vstirrup, projecting forward, and taking hold of the link when the stirrup is raised.
When the cars are coupled the stirrup is seated lin the bottom recess, so that the link assumes its position above the same. For un-V coupling, the4 stirrup is raised, which carries the link to such height that it may readily pass out of the draw-head over the central coupling-hook. l
The raised position of the stirrup may be' secured by seating the bail D in a groove,'e,
at the top of the draw-head in frontof the stirrup, so that -the bail, by its inclined position, supports the stirrups.
rIhe coupling is very simple and reliable, and dispenses with the common pin, Awhile avoiding accidents by the automatic working of the parts without going in between the cars.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with adraw-head, having a groove, e, across the top, of a vertically-reciprocating stirrup, 0, having ring D, pivoted to the upper end thereof, as and for the purpose specified. Y
EDWARD A. GOODELL.
