ASSIGENOBS TO OSWEGO FALLS CORPORATION, OF FULTON, NEW
-PORATION F NEW YORK Yonx, A conf PAPER CONTAINER .Application me; February 15, 1927. serial No. 168,333.
The purpose of this invention is to successfully solve the difficult problem of providing a. tapered or nesting paper container thatembodies a removable slip cover, that will com. '5 ply with the requirements of the public and trade, that will be capable of manufacture by quantity production methods, and that can be placed on the market at a reasonable price. With the foregoing and other objects in 1o view, the invention consists in certain novel structural features, and/or in formations and combinations as m'ore fully and particularlv set forth and specified hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof Fig. 1 shows the upper or large diameter end portion of a' nesting or tapered paper container of our invention, in sectional elevation.
Fig. 2 shows the tapered paper container of Fig. 1 in sectional elevation, the cover not be ing shown.
Fig. 3 shows in longitudinal section, part of a hollow mandrel and part of a tapered paper body or barrel-located in such mandrel with its large extended end projected upwardly therefrom, preparatory to shaping such end to form the peculiar novel container body rim.
Fig. 4 shows in longitudinal section, the
forming head, and the rim of the paper container body as formed by the cooperation of the mandrel and head.
In the drawings, we show a paper container that embodies a tapered or nesting sheet paper body or barrel l; a suitable bottom that includes bottom closing disk 2, indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 2; and a removable slip friction cap or cover 3, formed of sheet paper material.
The barrel 1, is tapered to its large mouth, and is preferably composed of a sheet of suitable paper board or like sheet fibrous material usually formed by folding a flat sheet paper blank around a mandrel so that its ends overlap and can be cemented or otherwise secured together vto form a liquid tight joint that extends longitudinally throughout the length of the hollow body or barrel thus formed. This barrel tapers or increases in structures of Fig. 3, and the upsettingor diameter from its lower to its large mouth or open end to produce a truncated cone shape. These containers having tapered bodies when wlthout their covers, canv be nested one within the other into stacks, for packing and shippmg purposes, where economy in bulk or space desirable, the covers for the containers being suitably assembled for packaging with the container bodies, if desirable. The lower or small diameter end of the body is closed to, preferably, form a liquid tight joint and an annular depending base or rim 2a, by a suitable bottom closure that preferably embodies a heavy flat inset paper board bottom disk 2, of overlarge diameter, and suitable body formation and crimping, upsetting or rolling'tightly and permanently securing said bottom disk and forming said annular base 2a. However, our present invention is not concerned with the particular bottom formation.
The sheet material barrel 1, is originally formed of substantial over length both at its small (lower) end and at its large (upper) end l, to provide an extra body length to be taken up by the bottoming form the annular projecting base 2a, and an extra top body length to be taken up by the peculiar top exterior cover-receiving rim formation.
The upper large end of the body is formed with an annular exterior more or less elastic rim-forming hollow roll or crimp that is radially iiattened or narrow and that is longitudinally or vertically elongated and that forms and constitutes the transversely or radially rounded annular top edge or lip 4,
'of the container surrounding its mouth, and
that provides the exterior vertical approximately cylindrical wall 4b, in downward exterior continuation of the lip 1l, and which wall is cushioned or more or less elastic or yielding for frictional-holding sliding contact with the cover flange.
The exterior depending substantially ver- U tical and cylindrical wall 4", terminates in the bottom inwardly radially or transversely rounded or curved lower end portion 4a, of the rim forming roll, and this inturned portion tterminatesinthe free in, or if so desired up, turned free edge 4, that abuts the tapered outer surface of the barrel 1, with the raw edge extremity preferably covered and con` cealed. 'lhe bottom edge. 4, of the roll bears against but is preferably not secured or fastened to the tapered outer surface of the barrcl l. and hence is free to yield and slightly move with respect to the barrel during the olwrations of' applying and removing the cover, v
The vertically elongated vertical 1-i1nfo11n ing roll, in connection with the outer surface of the barrell, within the roll, encloses or forms an annular air cushion, pocket or chamber 4d, which aids in expanding the more or less elastic roll in maintaining its friction grip on or engagement with the cover fiange.
This` rim-forming roll formation is at the exterior of the barrel and permits the Haring inner surface of the barrel to continue unbroken and at a uniform angle from the bottom formation to the rounded top edge or lip 4, of the barrel, which is a desirable characteristic.
The paper material cover 3, is of any desirable or suitable formation of the slip cover type with a container mouth-covering top wall and an annular substantially vertical cylindrical depending flange 3, that is vertically or longitudinally elongated with respect to the vertical length of the rim-forming roll of the container body, which flange is stiff and with a cylindrical inner surface without projections, i. e. smooth-surfaced. This cover 3, is preferably so formed that when the slip cover is in normal closing position on the body to constitute therewith the complete container` the usually flat top wall of the cover closes down on and abuts the annular top edge or lip 4, of the body, and the cover flange 3a depends to a distance below the rim-forming exterior roll lof the body, and at its inner surface has more or less tight frictional holding engagement with the elongated vertical cylindrical outer wall 4b, of said rim. The internal diameter of the long cylindrical cover flange 3a, more or less closely approximates the normal external diameter of the elastic elongated cylindrical rim wall 4", and the cover can be slipped to and from container body covering position by exercise of the necessary power to overcome the friction between the engaging cover and rim surfaces even though said friction is augmented by the elasticity of said friction wall which compensates for slight variations in the internal diameter of the cover flange and distortions thereof from accurate cylindrical form. Furthermore, the vertically elongated form of the outer wall 4b, of the rim, aided if need be by its elasticity and trapped air backing, affords ample area of gripping frictional contacting surfaces between said wall and the long cover fiange to maintain the cover in closing posltion on the body to meet trade and users requirements.
The wide exterior annular top lip 4, that is radially rounded and curves upwardly, outwardly and downwardly to merge into the vertical outer wall 4b, materially aids in the initial movement of starting the cover onto the container which is usually accomplished by a tilting movement of the cover onto the body top.
The tapered container body is originally formed with the overlong large tapered end 1, for formation into the exterior rim-forming roll, preferably by means of a hollow mandrel 5, and a roll forming die or crimping head 6. The paper body, or at least said overlong end l, thereof is first preferably more or less heavily parafiined or otherwise provided with a lubricating waterproofing material, to afford lubrication between the contacting rubbing surfaces of the paper and die during the upsetting and rolling operation to prevent fracture and breaking of the paper and to permit reshaping and expanding of the paper to a new permanent form without opening fissures and separations in the paper. The body 1, is then inserted in the hollow mandrel 5, say as indicated by Fig. 3. The die 6, having in its bottom face peculiarly formed and proportioned crimping or upsetting groove 6, then descends on the overlong paper body end l, and in cooperation with the end die face 5, of the mandrel, reduces the overlong body end, to the desired permanent rim-forging roll form substantially as shown by Fig. 4.
As at present advised by experience, we do not wish to limit all features of our invention to such method or such apparatus for the formation of our new nesting container body rim formation.
