DISPLAY RACK` K Filed lay 17, 1938 INVENTOR.
entre lith i HARRY L. SNYDLER, UF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA DISPLAY RACK Application filed May 17,
My invention relates to racks7 and more particularly to racks ilor displayin` publications, magazines, cards, maps and the like7 the principal object-s ot the invention being 5 to increase the visibility ot the laces oit displayed publications, to support the publications in relatively erect position, to display the objects in a substantially vertical tile, and to prevent drooping,` of the unbound edges lo ol volumes.
A further object is to provide a collapsible and relatively light construction7 ttor setting up on a horizontal surfacej that will be substantial and stable.
ln accomplishing)V these and other objects ot the invention l have provided improved details of structure, the preferred terms et which are illustrated in the accoinpanying` drawings9 wherein:
Fig'. 1 is a perspective View et' the rack in functioning position.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective section ul view oi a portion o'l the rack.
ll 3 is a detail disassociated perspective view of magazine supporting members.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a base comprising preferably :i rectangular wooden block 2 provided with 3G instal cover 3, and supported on rr 'lient reet Ll. A metal channel member 5 comprising' a body 6 and side flanges 7 is hinucdly supported from the base by spaced brackets 8 and a pin 9 journalec in the brarfn s und 5 extending; through the flanges ot the channel A member adjacent its end.
'lhe brackets 8 preferably comprise ears struck out from the metal cover 3. rlihe channel member is adapted to overlie the base in collapsed position.
'lhe channel member is braced in an anggu lar position relative to the base by an lllshaped 'wire trame 10 having ends 1,1 inbent andpifvotully retained by clips l2 attached to the base by screws 13, the transverse member 141; of the trame being pivotally connected with the channel by a clamp 15 fixed to the rear tace of the channel substantially mid- Way ot its length by a scieW 1G. The frame 11 may be disengaged l'rom the channel mene bil 192B. Serial No. 278,450.
ber by removal from the clamp 15 lor collapse ol' the structure.
I-lingedly supported by pins 17 extending across the channel member into openings 18 in the side flanges thereof are brackets 19 preferably consisting of metal strips havingl angularly exten din g book-supporting shelves 2() provided With back turned edge portions 21 comprising` ring-like sleeves tor mounting on the pins 17. Connected with the upper edges of the bracket strips 19 preferably by pivotal mounting; in rolled. sleeves on said edges are magazine-retaining Wire loops Q3, the preferable form of one of which 'will be described in detail. c5
The loop 23 comprises a Wire bent to provide a rectangular frame or pocket portion 2st and a rectangular upstanding arm at one corner of the trame and in the vertical plane of the 'front branch Q6 thereof, said front branch including the two encs 2( and 28 of the Wire Jfrom which the trame is formed. These ends may be sprung` apart for admitting them into the sleeve 22. and are provided With ears 29 stamped from the metal 'Z of the Wire to limit the movement of the ends into the sleeve.
The pins 17 are spaced along the channel member suitably `to the various lengths ot strips 19 provided for a particular raclr, and the loops 23 enclose adjacent strips and are restrained thereby upon forward pivoting. The topmost loop, lacking a restraining strip7 is provided with a restraining clip 30 attached to the channel, the clip being;y ot sutil a cient length to permit the loop and strip conn nected therewith to lie flat on the channel when the structure is in collapsed position.
The side flanges ofthe channel are cut away at the upper end thereof to provide an unflanged tip 31 oit the body on which a notice board or sign 32 may be mounted. it similar board 33 may be attached to the lowern'iost strip 19. An aperture 34 adjacent the upper end ci' the channel is provided tor ci aging the rack with a nail or similar retaining; device fixed in a vvall, to stabilize the device and for supporting` the same trom the Wall When the rack is to be displayed in an elerated position. Openings 35 in the channel In using the device the magazine retaining loops are normally retracted to overlie the channel member, and are moved forward by pivoting the strips to permit the insertion of articles such as magazines therethrough. rlhe magazines rest on the leaves or shelves el' the bracket-like strips and their upper portions extend above the loops. The upstanding arms of the Wire frame or pocket members are preferably provided as in the iilustrated application of the invention on the right hand side of the loops, and extend along the front right-hand edges of the magazines.
rlhe structure provides, therefore, or supporting the magazines in substantially erect position so that their front covers are plainly yvisibleifrom positions in front of the rack, and the tree and unbound edges of the leaves and covers are restrained and prevented from drooping. vWhile the several magazines are supported Vin staggered relation from front to back of the rack, they occupy arelatively small horizontal area.
The Wire loops are restrained in forward tilting by engagement with the adjacent brackets, the topmost 'loop being restrained by the special hook-like clip.
Wire loops and brackets may be provided of suitable dimensions and formfor supporting articles ot various characters and sizes,
Y for example, the lower loops and brackets being larger than those above to accommodate larger magazines, and the loops being adapted to support` the right-hand upper corners of the magazines by means of the upstanding arms. A
The rack may be knocked down or collapsed for shipment or removal by removing the brace from the clamp, an-d pivoting the brace and channel member to lie along the base. The brackets ma then be pivoted to overlie the channel mem er While the Wire loops are free to move to flat position on the channel member.
WhatI claim and desire'to secure by Letters Patentl is:
, 1. A display rack comprising a base, a support hinged to the base, a brace member hingedly connected With the base and the support, a plurality of article-supporting members having inturned shelf portions pivotally connected with the support, land retainer loops hingedly connected with the upper end of said supporting VInemliers and vertically aligned with sai-d shelf portion for retaining the yarticles supported thereby.
2. In a display rack, a base, a body member hinged to the base, abrace member hinged to the base and to the body member for supporting thebody member in inclined position, a
plurality of interlocking article-receivingr membersv supported by the body member, each comprising a bracket member having inturned shelf portions hinged to the body member, and an articleretaining loop sup ported by each bracket and engaging the next higher bracket for retention thereby.
3. In a display rack a base, a support including a channel member hinged to the base and having side flanges, article-support brackets having inturned shelf portions pivotally supported from the side flanges, Wire loop members hingedly connected with the brackets and engaging the next higher bracket, and means on the loop for engaging the protruding edge portion of the supported article.
4. In a display rack, a base, a body member hinged to the base, a brace member hingedly connected With the body member and removably attached to the base, a series of' brackets having inturned flange portions at their lower ends pivotally supported from the body member, rectangular-shaped retainer loops hinged to the upper ends of the brackets, the loop of one bracket engaging the next higher bracket to restrain the pivoting thereof, and an upstanding tongue portion on the loop members for engaging the protruding edge portion of the supported article.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
HARRY L. SNYDER.
