This invention relates to connecters for use in conveniently making and interrupting, at will, electrical connection between parts of an electric circuit, for instance, in bringing the end of a flexible cord into electrical connection with terminals, and particularly to electrical connecters of the plug and socket type, or type in which two members are assembled by telescopic action.
The object of the invention is to provide a connecter which will be simple and cheap in construction and assembly, but very efiicient and durable under the usage to which devices of this kind are subjected in service.
According to one part of the invention, the pairs of terminals with which the respective members of the connecter are equipped, are so mounted in the telescoping members that, while permitted to enter into sliding contact with one another in the assembly of the connecter, they are nevertheless sufliciently retired within the members that carry them to prevent either electrical or physical contact with other objects, when the members are apart.
According to another part of the invention, terminals are mounted in the member whic carries them by introducing them into longitudinal boresor openings in the body of such member, and then screwing a shell or cap upon the end of said body portion to prevent escape of the terminals from the bores; the terminals being preferably provided with lateral projections or ears which are gripped between the end of the body portion and the shell, so as to preventdisplacement of the terminals in either longitudinal direction.
According to another part of the invention, the flexible conductors or members of the cord are secured to one member of the connecter through means of an anchoring tongue so that the ends of said conductors, which are soldered or otherwise united with the terminals within the members, would not be subjected to impairment by a pull upon the cord; said anchoring tongue being constructed with a series of apertures through which the conductors are woven, preferably in oppositedirections, so that when drawn taut they develop a grip upon the bars between the apertures preferably combined with that of and so relieve their connections with the terminals; and said anchoring tongue being the connecter me1nbers which comprises portion seating it in a recess in the body portion and confining it in said recess by engagement of the shell.

1 represents the socket member of an electrical connecter, in which are mounted terminals 2, 2 which, in the arrangement shown, are of knife blade form and, by way of illustrating a use for the connecter, are shown as is a detail view of one of the 1 leading to members of a make and break device 3, which forms nopart of the present invention. bent portion being extended laterally in opposite directions as shown at 8, to provide an enlargement through which the terminal engages the end of the body portion surrounding the bore which receives the terminal, as well as the shoulder of the shell by which said enlargement is pressed firmly to its seat against the body portion. Resiliency of the clip terminals 8, 8 together with the impingement of their shoulders 8 against the sides of the bores in which they are mounted, cause said terminals to enter into effective contact with one another, the reduced width of the terminal beyond their said shoulders, allowing sufficientresiliency for this purpose. To secure the terminals 8, 8 in their bores 9, 9, said terminals are constructed with lateral extensions or ears 8* which overlie the end of the body portion 6 and are confined thereagainst by means of an annular shoulder 10 on the shell 5 Conductors 11 constituting the flexible cord, have their ends electrically united with the terminals 8, 8", preferably by soldering or otherwise connecting them with the ears 8", and in order that an excessive pull on the cord 11 may not impair these connections, an anchoring tongue 12 is seated in a groove 12 in the end of the body portion 6, and held therein by engagement of the annular shoulder 10 with the offsets 12 of said tongue; and said tongue is constructed with apertures 13, 14 through which the wires 11 can be woven, preferably in opposite directions, so that tension upon the cord will cause the wires to bind against the bars which define the apertures and thus save the electrical connections from injury.
In assembling the parts of a connecter constructed as herein described, it is simply necessary to unscrew the shell 5 from the body portion 6 of the plug member of the connecter, thread the cord 11 through the end opening of said shell, pass the shell back upon the cord where it will not inconvenience manipulation of the wires of the cord, then weave the wires through the apertures of the anchoring tongue and electrically connect the ends of said wires to the clips 8, 8, when the shell can be returned to and screwed home upon the body portion, and the assembly will be complete and an end of the body portion 6 will be left protruding for insertion into the socket member 4.
I claim: 1. A connecting member for electric circuits, comprising a body portion having a transverse slot in an intermediate portion of one end and longitudinal bores on either side of said slot, terminals fitted in said bores and having lateral extensions overlying the end of said body portion, an anchoring tongue consisting of a flat plate having an offset end seated in said recess, and a shell threaded upon said body portion and constructed with an annular shoulder engaging'with and holding against the body portion the offset end of the anchoring tongue and the lateral extensions of the terminals.
