Our invention relates to an improved automatic stop device designed to look a recipro eating member to which it is attached against movement in one direction but to allow free movement in the opposite direction and more particularly to devices wherein the reciprocating member carries a pivoted locking dog or latch which co-operates with a fixed stop and is arranged to ride upon said stop in both directions of movement as well as to pass said stop freely on movement in one direction and to lock against said stop on movement in the opposite direction.
Our invention is designed especially to provide a simple and compact construction insuring a change in position of said locking dog or latch on continuation of movement of the supporting member past the locking position, such change of position being effective to permit the latch to pass the locking position free- 1y on the reverse movement of its supporting member. A further object is to insure a change of position of the latch such that its supporting member may move freely in one direction without obstructing the latch until the locking position is attained where the dog will lock against reversal of movement.
For. convenience of description the motion in one direction will be termed the forward movement and the reverse motion or motion in the opposite direction will be termed the backward movement.
This invention consists in the provision of fixed lugs provided as hereinafter described to be engaged by the latch at the desired stages of the forward and backward movements to insure said changes of position of the latch, all as will be hereinafter more particularly described in connection with'the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 shows the parts in side elevation in position for free forward movement past the stop.
Fig. 2 shows the position of the same parts as the latch begins to be passed through the throat on the forward movement wherein the actuating lugs or cars are located.
Fig. 3 shows a position of the reciprocating device and pivoted locking dog or latch at which the latch will look upon attempt to move the support in the backward direction.
Fig. 4 shows the said parts after the latchcarryingmember has moved sufficiently in the forward direction to free the latch from the throat and allow it to be moved to position such that it may pass freely through the throat on the backward movement.
Fig. 5 shows the latch in position as it is about to enter the throat on the backward movement. V
Fig. 6 shows the position of the latch as it is about to pass the shoulder of its stop on the backward movement.

In the drawings:
1 indicates a reciprocating member which carries a locking dog or latch indicated at 2. Said dog or latch ispivotally mounted at 3 so that it may take or be moved into the various positions shown in the drawings. The arrow 4 shows the direction of the forward movement or motion herein referred to and arrow 5 in the various figures shows the direction of the backward or reverse movement.
, The stop with which the latch co-operates is shown at 6 and is formed preferably as a shoulder or offset on a fixed member consisting preferably of a solid block or casting 7 adapted to be firmly secured as indicated by screws or other devices to a fixed support. Said stop 6 extends upwardly toward the path described by the latch when moved by said reciprocatingmcmbers1. Said casting 7 is also provided with the downwardly projecting lugs or cars 8 and 9 located above the throat or opening 10 in said block or casting through which the latch passes in the for ward and backward movements.
Said lugs 8 and 9 are located as shown respectively at opposite sides of the vertical line passing through the stop 6.

In an automatic stop device, the combination with a reciprocating member and latch mounted thereon, of a fixed member providing a throat through which the latch passes in the backward and forward movements of said member, said member being provided with a locking dog or shoulder engaged by one side of the latch, and two lugs adapted to engage the other side of the latch, and operating to throw the latch downwardly after it passes the locking shoulder or stop in the forward and backward movements respectively.
