The principle object of the invention is the production of novel mechanism permitting the latchbolt to be latched or dogged against movement by actuation of a handle on the outside of the door which latching means however, is automatically released from latching position when a handle on the inside of the door is actuated to" actuate the latchbolt.
A further object of the invention is the production of a mechanism permitting the inside handle to be located remote from the latch bolt and in a position permitting it to be easily accessible.
Still a further object of the invention is the production of the latchbolt mechanism having rotatable actuating means for retracting said latchbolt upon rotation thereof in either direction.

Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawing:

Mounted on plate 5 is a slidable plate or latch-bolt member 12 provided with slots 13 through which the headed pins 14 extend, said headed pins being secured to said plate 5. llhe slidable plate 12 is also provided with a flange 15 through which the shank 10 of the latchbolt extends and to which flange said shank is secured in any manner. narily. W hen the handle 18 is rotated the rollback 17 engages the flange 16 tending to move the slidable plate 12 rearwardly against the action of the spring 11 and consequently to retract the latchbolt 11 in an obvious man ner.
19 indicates a link which is pivoted as at 20 to the slidable plate 12, the other end of said link being slotted as at 21 and receiving a headed pin 22 which is secured to a rotatable plate 23. i The extreme inner end of said link 19 is provided with a projection 24- the other portions of said end of said link having a cam surface as indicated at 25. The said rotatable plate 23 is provided with a hollow bearing 26 mounted on and extending through the inner wall 3. 27 indicates the hub of an inside operating handle 28 which receives the bearing a set-screw 29. Extending through the bearing 26 is a headed latching pin 30 the shank of which is provided approximately intermedi ate its ends with grooves 31 having beveled walls all as more clearly indicated in Figs. 4 and 5. A portion of the hub 27 is recessed as at 32, said recess containing a detent 33 having a beveled end, as shown, adapted to engage within the grooves 31. The end of said detent is normally held in engagement with either of said grooves by the action of a spring 34 located within said recess 32.
When the latching pin 30 is pulled outwardly as shown in Fig. 5, the latchbolt 11 may be retracted by rotation of the outside handle 18 which slides the slidable plate 12 rearwardly carrying the link 19 with it, the pin 22 then sliding in the slot 21. When the latching pin 30 is pressed inwardly in the position shown in Fig. 4 it is impossible, however, to retract the latchbolt by rotation of the outside operating handle as the projection 24 of the link 19 will abut against the end of the shank of the latching pin 30 to hold the slidable plate 12 against rearward movement. As is obvious, the latching pin 30 may be pressed into latching position or pulled outwardly therefrom manually at will and during such movement the end of the detent 33 is forced, against the action of the spring 34, from engagem'ent with one of the grooves 31 and then into engagement with the other groove by the action of said spring.
The latchbolt may be retracted by the inside operating handle 28 irrespective of the position of the locking pin 30. When the locking pin 30 is in retracted position and the handle 28 is rotated, the rotatable plate 23 is also rotated, as is manifest, causing a rotation of the link 19 on the pivot 20 due to the pin and slot connection between said link and rotating plate. This pulls the movable plate 12 rearwardly drawing the latchbolt with it. Should the latching pin 30 be pressed forwardly into latching position the latchbolt may be retracted by rotation of the handle 28' without the necessity of first pulling the latching pin outwardly manually. In this case the end of the shank of the latching pin, upon rotation of the rotatable plate 23, is
'- brought into engagement with the cam end 25 of the link 19 so that the latching pin, as shown in Figs. 5 and 7, is pressed into retracted position by said cam end.
The particular location of the inside operating handle is one of convenience also as it is unnecessary for the operator sitting in the conventional seat of an automobile to lean forward in order to actuate said operating handle. It will also be noted that the inside operating handle 28 may be rotated in either direction for retracting the latchbolt. What we claim as our invention is: 1. In a latch, a latchbolt, a rotatable plate,
a link pivoted to said latchbolt and to said plate and provided with a cam, a handle connected to said plate and a latching pin extending through said plate and adapted to be engaged by the cam of said link.
2. in a latch, a latchbolt, a slidable plate connected to said latchbolt, a rotatable memher, a pin on said rotatable member, a link pivoted to said slidable plate and having a slot receiving said pin and a handle for rotating said rotatable member to retract said latchbolt.
3. In a latch, a latchbolt member, a handle for retracting said latchbolt member, a connection pivoted to said handle and said latchbolt member and a latching pin for holding said latchbolt member against movement and adapted to be engaged by said connection.

In a latch for doors, a latchbolt, means for operatlng the same comprismg a link connected to said latchbolt, a handle for actuating said link and a stop movable to position to prevent actuation of said link in a direction to retract said latch-bolt by said handle, and means controlled by the rotation of said handle for moving said stop to inoperative position. 7. In a latch for doors, a latchbolt, a plurality oft retracting means therefor having their axes parallel to each other but remote from each other and means co-axial with one of said retracting means for latching another one of said retracting means against movement.
8. In a latch a latchbolt, a handle formed with a supporting spindle and constructed for actuating said latchbolt, ,7 additional means for actuating said latchbolt, locking means for preventing movement of said bolt by said additional means, said locking means comprising a pin carried by said handle and movable relatively thereto to or from locking position, and means for automatically moving said pin into unlocked position upon movement of said handle.
