wvhen the base thereof is disposed in a horizontal plane and at other times when the base is disposed in a vertical plane. In either case,
however, the cables from the drums are taken oil in the same direction, thus necessitating shifting of the cable guides. It is at this point wherein the interchangeable feature of my improved guide enters that the same guiding structure may be used at either position.
In the accompanying drawings 1 have shown for purposes of illustration one form which my invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings,-
Fig. 1 is a frontelevation of the hoist with the guiding rollers mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the hoist dis posed in a horizontal position.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation with the hoist disposed in a vertical position.
In the illustrative embodiment I have shown a. usual type of double drum hoist 1 which, briefly described, comprises a base 1 having standards 2 and 3 and a central stationary motor l; between which elements are rotatably mounted drums 5 and 6 with the usual suitable braking mechanism 7. Itwill of course be understood that my invention is applicable to other types of hoisting mechanism wherein the standards or other suitable supports will each have surfaces such as 8 and 9 which are symmetrical with respect to the central axis thereof and that any other arrangements of surfaces can be used as long as the same are adapted to permit the shifting of my improved cable guiding means.
The improved cable guide comprises two L-shaped brackets 10, one mounted on each standard, and each having a flange l1 disposes on the short portion. 12 which is conneoted to the longer portion 13 by a slight inclined portion 14. The inclination of the flange 11 is such that when placed upon the surface 9 the long port-ion 13 will still be parallel to the vertical axis oi? the standards. 'lwo sets of bolt holes 15 and 18 are formed respectively in the short and long portions of. the brackets which are held to the standards as by bolts Tpassing through the flanges 11. Carried by the brackets 10 is a roller supporting bracket 18 shown in Fig. 1 as compris ng telescopic U-shaped brackets 19 and 20, it being noted that the member 20 is bent inwardly as at 21 to accommodate a suitable exhaust pipe 22 for the drum driving motor. The parallel portions of the U-shaped bracket 19 extend beyond the transverse portion of the bracket 20 and are bent inwardly as at 23 to term a short supporting portion when the cable guide is disposed asshown in Fig. 3. The two U-shaped brackets are bolted together to form a unit as by bolts 2 1, while the ca ble guiding rollers 25 are rotatably mounted by the transverse portions of the two U-shaped brackets, it being noted that the same are s laced inwardly from the flanges 26 ot the drums 5 and 6. Two sets of bolt holes 27 are formed in the U shaped bracket- 19 so as to match the bolt holes 15 and 16 in the L-shaped brackets 10, the distance between the respective holes of each set being the same In the operation of the device the bracket 18 will be supported as shown in Fig. 3 in order to permit the hoist to be mounted with its base in a horizontal position, in which case the short portion 23 of the bracket 19 will lie adjacent the short portion 12 of the L-shaped bracket 10 while the parallel portion of the U-shaped bracket 19 will lie adjacent the long portion 13 of the L-shaped bracket, in which position bolts 28 will pass through openings 27 and bolts 29 will pass through the openings 15. If desired, a suitable bracket could be connected to the upper endot the U-shaped bracket 19 and to some suitable stationary element of the hoist. If it is now desired to place the hoist with its base in a vertical position as shown in Fig. 2 and still allow the cable 30 to be paid off in the same direction as shown in 1g. 3, the Lshaped brackets 10 will be supporter on the surface 9 and the roller supporting bracket will be shifted so that only the short portion 23 will be engaged by the L-shaped brackets, in which case the bolts 28 or 29 will be used to secure the guiding roller bracket in fixed position. It is to be noted that in either position of the hoist the guiding rollers will be disposed in a vertical plane. From either Figures 2 or 8 it will be noted that in each position of the hoist the rollers can ha e a plurality of positions, for instance in Fig. 2 this would be accomplished simply by removing the bolt 16 and placing the roller supporting bracket, including elements 19 and 20, in its rearmost position such as to utilize the openings 27. This would give two positions for the horizontal disposition of the hoist in the frame, while in Fig. 3 the guiding roller bracket could be extended such as in Fig. 2 thereby giving two angular positions for the vertical disposition of the hoisting frame. It is also to be noted that when certain of the new positions are obtained the brackets 10 and 14, which broadly constitute supporting means, are reversed with respect to their former positions. Looking at the device from another angle, the element, say 10, is moved about an axis disposed transversely of the drum axis during shifting of the rollers or the end of the element is thrown on either side of the longitudinal axis.
lVhile I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scop of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to by Letters Patent is:
1. In a hoisting mechanism, a drum, cable guiding means therefor, and supporting means adapted to position the said guiding means in a plurality of angular positions about the drum axis comprising an element composed of angularly related parts and an element adapted to be selectively secured to one or another of said parts.
2. In a hoisting mechanism, adrum. and cable guiding means therefor adapted to have a plurality of angular positions with respect thereto comprising supporting means for said guiding means including L-shaped members adapted to be selectively secured together so as to form a U-shaped support or an L-shaped support.
3. As an article of manufacture, a cable guide support comprising an angular bracket adapted to be rigidly secured to a hoist, a supplementary guide carrying member c0n stituted by a plurality of angularly related portions, and means for selectively securing areas-as said member to said bracket with one of said portions extended along difierent angularly related portions of said bracket.
4. As an article of manufacture, a cable guide support comprising an angular bracket adapted to be rigidly secured to a hoist, a supplementary guide carrying member constituted by a plurality of angularly related portions, and means for selectively securing said member to said bracket either with a single one of said portions extending along an angular part of said bracket or with two of said portions extending along angularly related parts of said bracket and with the angle between the two coincident with the angle of the bracket. 7
