INVENTOR ATTOR NEY Patented Get. 8, 1929 T F E 3 UNETEQ g MARY E. JAQUES, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA warez KNOT FASTENER FOR- SHOE STRINGS Application filed May 18,
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in knot fasteners for shoe strings, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character, which will be highly efiicient in use and economical in manufacture.
Among the objects of my invention is the provision of a device of the foregoingcharacter which should be arranged such that it may be expeditiously installed in operable position and one which will not inconvenience the user by causing irritation of parts of the body which may be juxtaposed to the fastener.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein a preferred form of construction is shown, and in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view depicting a preferred embodiment of my invention in operating position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view depicting my improved. knot fastener;
Fig. 3 is a longitud' al sectional view of the device illustrated in Fig. 2; I
Fig. 4 is a sectional detailview taken sub stantially on the line'4-4 on Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a view substantially similar to Fig. 4 depicting a modified form of construction. 7
In the drawings,wherein a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated, 10 indicates the knot tied adjacent the ends of a shoe lace 11 which is shown at Fig. 1 as being associated with a shoe 12, which includes a protecting tongue. 13. The device is adapted to be inserted around the knot 10 and one edge thereof rests on the tongue 13 and as will be described more fully hereinafter, this edge is shaped so as to alleviate the likelihood of irritation'to the users foot.
My improved device comprises a back plate 14 which preferably embodies a formation substantially similar to that indicated in Fig. 3 wherein it will be seen that there is a curved portion intermediate the ends thereof and that the forward end is disposed at a 1928. Serial No. 278,831.
higher level'than 'thelr ear end. Adjacent the rear end ofthe plate 14, and. adapted to extend at right angles. thereto along the edges I thereof, are upstanding ears'15, which .have openings ,such as 16 provided therein. In the embodiment of the'invention illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the top plate 17 of my de vice is arranged so as to embody a substan tially circular configuration longitudinally thereofwhich terminatesin a downwardly depending portion 18. Adapted to be struck from the side walls of the plate 17 adjacent the juncture between the downwardly depending portion 18 and the curved upper surface thereof, are outwardly extending ears 19 which are adapted to be inserted'into' the opening 16, in order that the plate 17 will be pivotally associated with the plate 14. The side walls 20 of the device are serrated as indicated at 21 along'their lower edges,- for a purpose now to bemade apparent.
In using the device, the plate 14 isinserted below the 'kIlOt and, the upper plate 17 is moved into position such that the portions of the laces adjacent the knot will be gripped by the, serrated portions 21. The downwardly' depending portion 18' will engage the inner side of the plate 14 adjacent the rear end thereof which preferably curves upwardly as indicated at 22 and therefore, substantially cam like action will result when theportion 18 engages thisjportion 22; Due.
to the thickness of the material between the upper. side of the plate 14and the serrated portions 22 and the foregoing mentionedcam action, the device will be securely locked into positionand thus retain the knot from becoming untied.
In Fig. 5, a modified form of construction is shown. Herein the back plate 14 is formed substantially similar to the back plate depicted in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. The top plate 23 in this instance is arranged so as to include a portion 24 at the rear end thereof which is bent so as to extend parallel with the plate 23 for a pre-determined distance and this portion 24 terminates in a downwardly depending portion 25. Ears 26 are struck from this downwardly dependingportion that are adapted to be mounted in the openings 26.
The side walls of the plate 23 are serrated as indicated at 27 andthis device forms in substantially the same manner as the device illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 and in this instance, the lower end of the portion cooperates with the formed portion 22 to pro duce the cam action.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do notwish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth herein, but desire to avail myselfof such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what i I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: V
A device of the character stated including a bottom plate having. a curved configuration extending longitudinally thereof whereby one end portion thereof will be disposed at a higher level than the other end portion thereof, said bottom plate having upwardly extending ears formed on the sides thereof at the lower end, a top plate having depending side portions on the lateral edges thereof, the lower side of said depending flanges being serrated, said top plate including a por- 77 tion at the end thereof disposed above the ears on said lower plate bent forwardly therealong on the under side thereof for a short "distance and then bent downwardly into entionof said topplate'will be forced into engagement with said bottom plate to secure said top plate in clamping position with respect to said shoelace.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature MAR-Y E.. JAQUES.
