Description

SHOE SHANK TRIMMING CUTTER Filed Sept. 16. 1927 ABMMW INVENTOR.
BY m 7 W A TTORNEY Patented 0d. 8, 1929 UNITED STATES HERMAN BERGER, OF SOUTH MILWAUKEE, AND JOHN KLESTINSKI, OF MILWAUKEE,-
PATENT OFFICE WISCONSIN, ASSIGNORS TO HELMHOLZ SHOE COMPANY, OF CU'DAHY, WISCONSIN,
A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN SHOE-SHANK-TRIMMING CUTTER Application filed September 16, 1927. Serial No. 219,969.
The invent-ion relates to shoes and more particularly to a cutter for trimming the outsole.
The object of the invention is to provide a cutter for trimming the outsole of the shoe by which the shank may be trimmed down thinner than is the usual practice to improve the appearance of the shoe and in which the cutter knives have their cutting edges extending the full length from the hub and are of relatively thin and tapering cross section whereby we are enabled to carry out the process defined in our cO-pending application Serial No. 219,968, filed September 16, 1927, and cut down the shank beyond the line of the stitching securing the outsole to the welt. 7
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more the blade from the hub4 to the outer thin cutting edge 8. The cutter is adapted to be clamped to the power driven arbor 9 of shank trimming machines of known construction and is associated with a roller or shield 10 and a channel flap deflector or collar 11 which abuts against the flat sides of the blades and keeps the stitch covering flap 12 of the outer sole 13 away from the center while trimming the shank portion of said sole so as to provide a thin edge 14L which tapers slightly back the full length of the cutter blades. With this arrangement the distance between the gauge roller 10 and the base of the cutter determined by the short shank. This cutter permits us to produce a thinner shank for the shoe than has heretofore been possible which greatly improves the appearance of the finished shoe.
WVe desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are included in the claim.
\Vhat we claim as our invention is:
In a shoe trimming mechanism, the combination with the rotating arbor, the shield roll mounted thereon and the deflector collar, of a cutter mounted on said arbor and having blades with flap surfaces working adjacent said collar and tapering on their opposite sides from the cutting tips to an annular portion of the cutter spacing said blades from said roll.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
JOHN KLESTINSKI. HERMAN BERGER.
