My invention relates to bufiing devices and it relates more particularly to bufling wheels used in manufacturing and repairing shoes. An object of the invention is to provide a construction which renders it an easy and ,simple matter to renew the buffing material. I accomplishthe objects of the invention by providing a split wheel for carrying the buffing material, said wheel being rotatively mounted on a hub member and a locking device being provided which holds the members of the wheel together when the wheel is turned in one direction around the hub and which permits the wheel members to separate when the wheel is turned in the other direction around the hub.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof, and the novel features of my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention,-
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the device. Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in central section on the line 33 of Fig. 5 showing the device in closed condition. Fig. 4: is a similar view showing the device in open condition. Fig. 5 is a view in section on the line 55 of ig. 3.
As shown in the drawings, I provide a hub member 10 which is adapted to be secured to a shaft 12 in any suitable manner.
The hub 10 is provided with a central circumferential flange 14 which is of considerably less width than the body portion of the hub. A split wheel consisting of two segmental members 16 and 18 is adapted to cooperate with the hub member, these seg1nental members each containing an interior circular groove 20 into which the flange 14 is adapted to fit rotatively. A pin 22 secured to the wheel member 16 extends through a concentric slot 24 in the flange 14 so that the wheel may have a rotative movement on the hub which is determined by the length of the slot 24. Diametrically opposite the pin 22, a
pin 26 is secured to the wheel member 18 so closed condition;
as to cooperate with an open-ended'slot 28 which is eccentrically arranged with relation to the center of the device. The wheel members 16 and 18 are preferably hinged together at one side as by means of a hinge 30. The periphery of the wheel is covered with a pad 82 of suitable material such as felt which is split at the side opposite the hinge 30 while the split faces of the wheel members adjacent the split portion of the pad are providedwith sharp points 84c adapted to be received in recesses 36 formed in the cooperating wheel member. The points 34 are respectively adapted to secure the two ends of a strip 38 of bufing or abrasive material such as sand or emery paper which is wrapped around the pad 32. The pin 26 and the outer wall of the groove 28 constitute a locking device for holding the wheel members together in their The operation and advantages of my invention will now be obvious. When the wheel is in open condition as shown in Fig. 4, a worn strip bufiing material may be readily removed and replaced bya fresh strip. When the wheel member 18 is moved into engagement with the hub and the wheel is given a rotative movement on the hub in clockwise direction into the position shown in Fig 3, the pin 26 rides in the eccentric slot 28 and the two wheel members are securely held together. When the device is in use, it 1s rotated by operation of the shaft 12 in counter- I clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 3 and indicated by the arrow A. When the material to be buffed is pressed against the butting Wheel, the tendency is to retard the wheel with relation to the hub which causes a slight rotative movement relatively to the hub in the direction of the arrow B. The .90
result is that the" member 18 is drawn still more closely toward the member 16. l Vhen the shaft is not running, the wheel may be turned on the hub into the position shown in Fig. 4 so that the buffing strip may be re- ,95
newed.
I claim:
1. A bufiing device comprising a hub adapted to be secured to a rotatable shaft, a peripheral flange on said hub, a pair of segmen tal Wheel members having interior grooves into which said flange fits rotatively said flange having a concentric slot and an eccentric slot, a pin carried by one. of said members, and passing through said concentric slot, a second pin carried by the other of said members, said second pin being adapted to engage in said eccentric slot When'the wheel is turned in one direction around said hub and being released from said slot when the Wheel is turned in the other direction around said hub, and a strip of bufling material car'- ried on the perphery of said Wheel.
2. A bufling device comprising a hub adapted to be secured to a rotatable shaft, a peripheral flange on said hub, a pair of segmental Wheel members having interior grooves into which said flange fits rotatively, a hinge connection for said members at one side of the Wheel, fastening devices for a strip of buffing material at the 0pposite side of said wheel, said flange havinga concentric slot and an eccentric slot, a pin carried by one of said members and passing through said concentric slot, and a second'pin carried by the other of said members, said second pin being adapted to engage in said eccentric slot when the wheel 'is turned in one direction around said hub and being released from said slot when the wheel is turned in the other direction around said hub.
3. A buffing device comprising a hub adapted to be secured to a rotatable shaft,
l a peripheral flange on said hub, a pair of segmental hinged wheel members having interior grooves into which said flange fits rotatively, said flange having an eccentric slot, a pin carriedby one of said Wheel members, said pin being adapted to engage in said eccentric slot when the wheel is turned in one direction around said hub and being released from said slot when the Wheel is'turned in'the other direction around said hub, and a strip of bu'fiing material carried on the perphery of the Wheel.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
