Other objects of the invention are the provision of a self-contained fare receiving and registering mechanism which is adapted to be positioned in a suitable stationary casing and capable either of being carried about from place to place to receive and register fare or of being permanently or temporarily positioned in said casing and operated while secured in said casing to receive and register fare, as well as the provision of suitable mechanism cooperating with said farereceiving and registering means to effect the release of coins therefrom and the display of each coin to public inspection after registration of the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means for actuating the fare receiving and registering mechanism when secured in position within the casing both to discharge a fare from said receiving and registering means and also to adjust the fare receiving and registering'mechanism to receive and register another fare, as well as means operated in conjunction with the fare releasing and readjusting means for guiding each fare as released from said fare receiving and registering means into position for visual inspection, and for discharging each fare from 40 its position of "isual inspection into a fare receptacle preliminary to the release of the next succeeding fare from the fare receiving and registering means and its guidance into position for visual inspection. Another object is to provide a mechanical fare collecting system which is portable or movable from one position for system operation to another position for system operation.

and in cross-section is, as shown but not necessarily, quadrangular, and has a hollow interior in which the head 2 is receivable. The

The housing 1 is provided in its top with an opening 19 which receives the upper end of the head 2, the head preferably being rounded off or merging into the top of the housing, whereby any interference of the projecting portion of the head 2 with the clothing or person of those associated with the system in its operation is obviated.
On the rear of its interior the housing 1 has the strips or ribs 20, Fig. '3, raised above the surface of the interior and extending from the top of the housing to near its bottom, the lower ends of the strips 20, when the housing is in covering position, resting on the upper surface of the base 21 of the head 2 and the bottom edge of the front of the housing resting upon an upwardly curved projecting portion or lug 22 extending crosswise of the front of the base 21, the curved recessed portions 18 of the housing being flush with the upwardly curved portion or lug 22 of the base, the purpose of the up- 1 ment by screws 23 side pieces 28 of the wardly curved portion or lug 22 being later stated. The sides of the housing, when the same is in covering position, extend over the corresponding sides of the base 21, the base thus being enclosed on its rear and sides by the housing, leaving the upward curved portion or lug 22 of the base exposed on its front, and the housing being secured against movepassing through the housing into the base.
The inspection chamber 15, Figs. 5 and 6, has a transparent top or cover 24, of glass or other suitable material and has a tilt-able bottom 25, turningwith a shaft or rod 26 secured at its ends in lu s 27 of the segmental ttom 25, the rod' or shaft 26 being journalled in opposed sides of the inspection chamber and having secured thereto and surrounding it the helix spring 29,. the free end 30 of this spring being extended and engaging under the bottom edge of the curved projection or lug 22 of the base 21, the tendency of the spring 30 being to re tain the bottom 25 in position for closing the inspection chamber the bottom 25 being movable to open position by the curved operating member 31 for removal of fare or coin and being returned to closing position by tension of the spring 29.
The head 2 is of suitable light weight and strong material, preferably being cast. and
.has at its upper end the projecting portion 32 which is received in the opening 19 of the housing 1, and has at its lower end the base 21 having the curved upwardly projecting portion or lug 22, before mentioned, crosswise of the front of the base. The base 21 on its under side is threadedly connected to the supporting post 3, this connection in the pres ent instance being by means of the threaded hexagonal nut integrally formed with the head 2, and permitting use of a wrench or spanner for securing the head and post together. The head 2 has a hollow interior and is provided in its rear wall near its top with the opening 33, Figs. 4: and 6, for receiving the inner end of the fare-register 4, and is provided in each of its opposed sides above the opening 33 with an inclined, circular ended slot 34, the slots 34 registering with each other. Near its lower end the head 2 is provided in each of its opposed sides with a circular ended slot 35, the slots 35 registering with each other.
In its interior the head 2, has formed on its opposed sides, preferably by casting. the oif set or inwardly extending wall portions 36 connected by the rear partition wall 37 and by the downwardly inclined floor or bottom 38 which merges at its rear end into the rear partition wall, an inclined passageway or trough 39, Figs. 4 and 6, thus being provided, the line of the inclined bottom 38 of which, at the front end of the bottom, is slightly below the upper edge of the opening let in the housing 1, whereby communication is had between the passageway or trough 39 and the inspection chamber 15, and passage of fare or coins by gravity from the fare-register 4 into the inspection chamber is permitted.
The head 2 has on one side the plate bar 40 and on the other side the plate bar 41, the plate-bars being similar to each other except that the plate bar 41 has near its lower end.

The plate bars 40 and 41 are connected to each other at their upper ends by the crosspin or rod 43 which passes through the slots 34 from one side of the head to the other. The plate bars 40 and 41 are connected to each other at their lower ends by the cross pin or rod 44, which passes through the slots 35 from one side of the head to the other.
The head 2, on each of its sides is provided with raised ribs 45 extending along the edges of the sides of the head and serving to protect the plate-bars when the housing 1 is passed over the head 2 in assembling and also strengthening the head.
The supporting post 3, has a hollow interior which is closed at its lower end by the cap 46 having an outwardly extending pin 47, which is engageable with a fixed foundation, such as the floor-plate 48, for removably retaining the system in a fixed position. The lower end of the post has therein the end plug 49 having the recess 50 therein. The sliding plug 51 carries the treadle 52, which extends through and is movable in the opening 53 in the supporting post. The sliding plug has the recess 54 therein in opposed relation to the recess 50, the sliding plug being yieldably supported by the spring 55 seated in the recess 50 and received in the recess 54. The sliding plug has on its upper end the pair of apertured lugs 56 the rod 57 being connected at its lower end to the sliding plug by the cross pin 58 passing through an eye 59 at the lower end of the rod and through the apertured lugs. The rod 57 extends upwardly through the interior of the supporting post 3 and the interior of the head 2 and is connected at its upper end to the crosspin or rod 44 by the hook 60.
The fare-register denoted by 4 preferably is of the kind described and shown in U. S. Patents No. 690,079, dated December 3, 1901 and No. 1,160,215, dated Nov. 16,1915, but can be of any form receivable in the housing 1 and head 2 and which comprises means for registering the fare or coin, which after registration passes through the register and is permitted to fall into the hand of the conductor or person collecting the fare.
The fare-register 4 is provided with the pressure operated push rod 61 shown in outline in Fig. 5. downward pressure whereof operates to adjust the register for the next coin registration; said fare-register being in serted at an incline through the opening 10 of the housing '1 and through the opening 33 of the head 2, the head of the fare-register extending outwardly for receiving fare or coins and permitting inspection of the 1%Ol'd of registration thereof. The inner end of the 5 fare-register is provided with suitable means such as the loop or eye 62, shown in outline,
with which the pivotally movable hook 12 is engageable for removably retaining the fare-re ister in the housing and head.
The are-register 4 being adjusted, the fare is inserted in the register, carried through the mechanism, registered, and drops by gravity through the inclined passage 39, the opening 14 into the inspection chamber 15, and;
stops on the inspection plate 63. The push rod 61 of the fare-register 4, which push rod 61 is the usual push rod formingpart of the fare register and numbered 8 in United States Patent No. 1,160,215, is then operated to adjust the fare re 'ster for the next registration by pressure on t e treadle 52 which pulls down the push rod 61, and upon relief of pressure on treadle 52 the push rod 61 is returned to normal position by the fare register 4 in the usual way, and the treadle 52 returned to normal position by spring 55.
The inspection plate 63, which constitutes a tiltable intermediate floor or bottom for the inspection chamber, has on its'rear edge at the sides a. pair of spaced apertured lugs 64 and 65. The inclined bottom of the trough 39 has on the under side of its front edge at the sides a pair of spaced apertured lugs 66 and 67, the lugs 66 and 67 ein greceivable between the lugs64 and 65, the lug' 65 having fixed'thereon an arm 68 havin an aperture therethrough registering with the aperture in the lug 67; the rod or shaft 69 passes through the arm 68, and through the In tion plate and of said inclin bottom, thereby maintaining the inspection plate in operative relation to the inclined bottom and to the transparent cover 24 of the inspection chamber and permitting radial movement of the inspection plate. And it will be noted that this arrangement of the inspection plate and the transparent top or cover 24 provides a means for independent inspection of each fare after collection and registrationthereof, and that this inspection can be made by a person at a distance from the apparatus, and permits a succeeding passenger to note the character of the fare paid by the next preceding passenger. The arm 68 has thereof the inspecwith the stop pin mounted on the exterior of the side of the head 2. The shifting plate has on its outer surface near its lower rear edge the pin 76, the pin 77 being mounted on the exterior of the head 2, and the spring 77' being strained between the pins 76 and 77 and tending to hold the end point 74 in engagement with the stop pin 75. The shifting plate 71 has in its edge, near its upper front end the circular recess 78, and the extending pin 70 of the arm 68 engages in this recess, the arm 68 being located outwardly of and adjacent to the shifting plate.
The shifter 79 is a substantially diamond shaped member, and is secured for pivotal movement to the outerside of the shifting plate 71 by the pivotpin 80. The shifter 79 has at its rear point for a portion of the length of the pointan inwardly turned transverse face or flange 81, the lower end of which en ages with the engagement face or shoulder 3 of .the shifting plate 71, and has on its front end a pin 82, there being a pin 83 mounted on the outer side of the shifting plate, and the spring 84 being strained be tween the pins 82 and 83, the tendency of this spring being to draw the front end of the shifter upwardly, or towards the pin 83.
By reference to Figs. 3 and 6, it will be noted thatwhen downward pressure is applied to the treadle 52, the plate- bars 40 and 41, are moved downwardly until the lower end of the plate-bar 41 is brought into contact with the upper edge of the rear point of the shifter 79 and continuing-downward carries the shifter with it until this point of the downwardly moved shifter slips into, or projects slightly into, the recess 4:2 of the plate-bar 41 and the adjacent edge of this plate-bar passes along in engagement with the transverse engagement face 81 of the shifter. The lower end of the transverse face 81 being in engagement with the face or shoulder 73 of the shifting plate 71, the shifting plate is thereby moved from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 6, to the position shown in outline in this figure, the arm 68 being moved upwardly by this movement of the shifting plate and causing the inspection plate 73 to be moved or tilted downwardly to the posit-ion shown in outline, whereby the fare or coin thereon is permitted to fall to the lower part of the inspection chamber 15 which constitutes the fare or coin receptacle of the system. Upon release of pressure on the treadle 52, the plate- bars 40 and 41 are moved upwardly by action of the spring 55, the lower end of the plate-bar 41 passing by the transverse face and rear point of the shifter, and finally moving clear of the shifter and to its first or normal position. lVhen the plate-bar 41 in upward movement is clear of the shifter 79 the shifting plate 71 and inspection plate 63 and the shifter 79, due to the springs 77 .nzaop 15 ing and registering unit which is adapted to he removed from or replaced within the cz'ising as desired, it is to be understood that the fare receiving and registering mechanism may be constructed as a non-removable part of the apparatus, if desired, and that such construction is to be within the purview of the appended claims.
It. will be noted from the foregoing description that I have provided a method of recei'i'ing and moving fare at the time of payment thereof whereby the fare is collected, is registered, each fare is independently displayed for inspection after registration, and after inspection and registration is moved to a general receptacle; and that during the. moven'ient of the fare the independent registration thereof may be made from a point distant from the point of dis- 2 1 Y pray Having thus described my invention it should be understood that there may be modifieations thereof andvariations therein, without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
Vhat I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patentis:
1. In a device of the character described, an upright stationary apparatus comprising a casing, and a combined fare receiving and,

registering mechanism insert-able within or rcmovahie from said casing and operable either separate from or when lnserted within said casing to receive and register fares, and
means in said casing voperable to readjust,
the fare receiving and registering means.
2. In a device of the character described, an upright stationary apparatus comprising a casing, a portable fare receiving and registtl'llrfl' mechanism insertable within or removable from the casing and operable both when inserted within the casing and when separate therefrom to receive and register fares, said n'iechanisn'i being provided with a. readjustirg arm, and means in said casing operable to actuate the readjusting arm after the receipt of each fare.
In a device of the character described, a stationary apparatus comprising :1 casing. a fare receiving and registering mechanism insertable within or removable from said casing and operable either separate from or when inserted within said casing to receive and register fare, and means within said casing cooperating with said fare receiving and registering means for readjusting said fare receiving and registering means after registration of each fare.
4. In a device of the character described, an upright stationary apparatus comprising a casing provided With an opening for the receipt of a self-contained unitary fare receiving and registering mechanism, a selfcontained fare receiving and registering mechanism removably secured Within the opening in said casing, and means associated with said casing and operable for readjusting the fare receiving and registering mechanism after the registration of each fare.
5. In a device of the character described, a casing, a combined fare receiving and registering unit insertable Within or removable trom said casing, means in said casing for retaining each fare in position to permit independent inspection of the same upon the release of such fare from the fare receiving and registering means, and means associated with said casing for readjusting the fare receiving and registering means after the registration of each fare.
6. In a device of the character described, an upright stationary apparatus comprising a casing, a self-contained fare receiving and registering unit removably positioned Within said casing and operable when positioned Within the casing to receive and register fare, and means in said casing movable to readjust said fare receiving and registering unit after registration of each fare.
7. In a device of the character described, a stationary apparatus comprising a casing, a combined fare receiving and registering mechanism insertable Within or removable from the casing and operable either separate from or when inserted Within the casing to receive and register fare, means for securing said fare receiving and registering mechanism Within the casing, and means within the casing and cooperating with said combined fare receiving and registering mechanism for readjusting the same for the registration of a succeeding fare after the receipt and registration of a fare therein.
8. In a device of the character described, a combined unitary fare receiving and registering means, means for retaining each fare in position to permit inspection of the same upon the discharge of each fare from the fare receiving and registering means, a receptacle for receiving each fare upon its discharge from the fare retaining means, and means for simultaneously discharging a fare from the fare retaining means and readjusting the fare receiving and registering means after the registration of each fare.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a casing, a fare receiving and registering means insertable within or removable from said casing and provided with an adjusting arm operable to readjust the mechanism after the registration of each fare, and means carried by the casing operable to actuate the readiusting arm after the registration of each fare by said receiving and registering means.
10. In a device of the character described, a portable self-contained fare receiving and registering unit, and mechanism separably connected with said fare' receiving and registering unit for retaining each fare in position to permit independent inspection of the same upon the release of such fare from the fare receiving and registering means.
11. In a device of the character described, a portable self-contained fare receiving and registering unit, mechanism separably connected with said fare receiving and registering unit for readjusting the same after the registration of each fare, and means for retaining each fare in position to permit independent inspection of the same upon the release of such fare from the fare receiving and registering unit.
12. In a device of the character described, a fare receiving casing provided With a fare collection box and a pivoted inspection platform associated therewith, means in said casing for operatively supporting a fare receiving and registering mechanism, a portable self-contained fare receiving and registering mechanism removably supported in said casing, means for guiding a fare from said fare receiving and registering mechanism to said platform, and means for readjusting said fare receiving and registering mechanism after the receipt of each fare and for tilting said inspection platform.
13. In a device of the character described, a fare receiving casing, means in said casing for operatively supporting a fare receiving and registering mechanism, a portable selfcontained fare receiving and registering mechanism removably supported in said casing, an adjusting push arm carried by said fare receiving and registering means, and a member slidably mounted in said casing and adapted to cooperate with said push arm to readjust the fare receiving and registering mechanism after the receipt of each fare.
14. In a device of the character described, a stationary casing, a portable self-contained fare receiving and registering unit, manually actuated means carried by said fare receiving and registering unit for readjusting the same after receiving and registering a fare, means carried by said casing for supporting the fare receiving and registering unit in operative position, and means carried by said casing for cooperat-ivelv engaging said readjusting means to actuate the same, Whereby said fare receiving and registering unit may be carried from place to place to receive and register fares or be secured to the stationary casing to receive and register fares.
