A effect in the finished stocking which is gen# The angular shaping formation 10 Ais orally unsightly in 'appearance and fails in formed by the para el lines of stitches or 10o selvage edges.
In one form of construction the wales 17 of the stocking outside the shapingl formation, are in general, parallel with the line of fashioning marks. They are also parallel with each other and with the selvage edge above the shaping formation in the ankle region 16 of the finished stocking. These lines may extend to and in part form the reinforced heel piece 18 and heel 19 and constitute the vertical lines of stitches of the'stock ing body with the apparent inset of the shaping formation to produce the optical effect and the desired neat fit.
The herein disclosed shaping formation may be produced in the stocking body in any f desired manner and preferably by knitting in the following manner.
It has been noted above that in the usual method of narrowing full fashioned stockings the rows of fashion marks caused by the narrowing run parallel with the seam of the stocking.l In the present invention, the.v
fashioning marks caused by the narrowing operation do not run parallel to the seam but are inclined towards the same at any desired angle. Thus for example, if, in
knitting the stocking fabric and at the beginning of fashioning there are thirty narrowing fingers in operation, this number is decreased progressively so that the last fashioning point is closely adjacent the selvage edge and the fashioning marks 15 will be substantially straight as shown as lines 11. The angle of the lines 11, 11 with the selvage edges (seam 14) depends upon the disytance or number of stitches 'between successive'fashioning marks. For example, if say five or six stitches are formed between successive fashioning marks a definite angle is formedwith the selvage edge. If a greater number of stitches is used, say 10, then the angle of the line of fashioning points with the selvage edge will be more acute.
By referring to the drawing it will be noted that the vertical lines of stitches or wales 13 are, as stated above, substantially parallel with the selvage edges (seam 14 in the finished stocking) and are constantly decreasing at the fashioning marks. It will also be noted that the wales 17 `are in general par-`y allel to each other and to the line of fashion points thereby giving the desired result, as stated above.
Having'now described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a full fashioned stocking having a seam, an angular shaping conformation composed of wales on either side of the stocking seam, said wales ending at merging points to form substantially straight lines of fashioning marks disposed at an angle to each otherand diverging from said seam. l
2. A stocking having a seam and a shaping formation bordered by fashioning marks to outline the enlarged portion of said stocking, said formation narrowing to a point above the heel and shaping wales in parallel relation with each other and with the lines of fashioning marks.
3. In a full fashioned stocking having selvage edges united into a seam, a shaping formation through which said seam runs, said shaping formation composed of wales parallel to said seam, and lines of fashioning Ymarks in which said wales merge, said lines (of fashioning points which diverge from either side of said finishing seam.
6. As an article of manufacture, a full fashioned stocking having a shaping formation divided by a seam, said formation formed by wales parallel with said seam and meeting in a line of fashioning marks at different levels, said line of fashioning marks form. ing an angle with the seam.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand on this 29th day of October, A. D.,
KATHERINE GINNANE.
