Description

UNITED? PATENT: romnon MELBOURNE C. BURR, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
VIMPROVEMENT IN HORSE HAY-RAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17 21,961, dated February 1,1876 application filed December 27, 1875. v
. To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MELBOURNE U. BURR, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, have invented Improvem'ents in Horse Hay-Rakes, of which the following is a specification:
The design of my invention is to increase the efficiency and ease with which a Ahorse hay-rake is operated; -and it consists in the combination of devices, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, Figure l is a plan View of the upper side of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the ground-wheel upon the nearest side being removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section upon line a: a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view ofthe tooth and holder.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A represents an axle, having journaled upon its ends two ground-wheels, B B. O C are the shafts, connected to the axle A and bar D in rear thereof, as will now be explained. a a are two straight bars, of metal or other suitable material, which pass under the axle, and connect the lower sides of the two shafts with the under side of the bar D, and are secured thereto by any well-known means. E E are two bars, curved as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and which t `over the top of axle, and connect the upper side of the bar D with the upper sides of the two shafts. By means of the bars D and E, arranged as shown and described, the axle is also connected to the shafts. The bars E E are provided with slots in their curved portions, into which one or -more friction-rollers, e, are journaled, for the axle to turn upon, to receive the draft from the horse, and to allow the axle to turn freely thereon when the weight ot' the operator is upon it. F are the curved toothlholders, secured to the axle by screw-bolts, and one on each side of the bars a E, so as to prevent lateral movementof the axle. Each of the tooth-holders is provided with two or more projections, f, having holes through them, into which the tooth is inserted, and secured in any desired position by the set-screw on the collar, at the same time not Varying the tension of the spring. v Ihese projections serve to secure the spiral spring g, encircling the tooth, and also serves as a stop for the adjusta-ble collar h on each tooth.
By the above-described devices, when a A tooth becomes bent, the colla-r h canv be adjusted thereon to make the points of the teeth even again; .also to set the teeth back or forward to suit even or rough grouud,'and withstrikes transverse bar. If the rod be reversed it will /not stop under the transverse bar, but the center joint is allowed to rise aboverthe other two, thus forming a lock-lever.
n is arslot in the lower end of seat bar or standard N, which is adjustably secured to the rear side of bar j by means of a set-screw, n', so that the seat can be raised or lowered by the operator when desired. The seat bar or standard is supported in the rear thereof by an adjustable rest or chair, m', secured to the transverse bar m by a set-screw, m", so that the seat can be thrown forward or backward, and supported in any desired position. O are bands or ferrules on .each end of the axle or rake-head, and projecting over the hubs of the wheels, to prevent the hay or straw from getting between the two, thereby clogging the machine. Dl are rods extending rearward from the bar D, to which they are secured, for insuring the discharge of the hay or straw from the rake when raised.
In view of the foregoing, further description of the operation of the machine is deemed Having thus fully set forth the nature and lIneritsof my invention, what I claim as new E, substantially as and for the purpose speci-l fied.
2. The combination, with the axle or rake head A, of the slotted and curved bars E, provided with friction-rollers f, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the lever Gr and axle or rakehead A, of the elongated bar or rod Z, connected as described, so as to form a stop and lock when the rake-head is lowered in working position.
4. The curved tooth-holder F, constructed as described, in combination with the tooth having a spiral spring, g, and adjustable collar h, as and for the purpose described.
5. The combination, with the vertical adjustable seat-standard N, of the adjustable rest or chair m', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
- MELBOURNE C. BURR.
