Description

Sept. 24, 1929.
F. A. GOGAN WATCH HOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR BELTS Original Filed Feb. 23, 1928 I WITNESSES 5 2.5
- INVENTOR Pu/ZZfl. 6%(01 Wow aw ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 24, 1929 UNITED STATES FRANK A. GOGAN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY WATCH-HOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR BELTS original application filed February 23, 1928, Serial No. 256,323, and in Canada April 11, 1928. Divided and this application filed December 1 1928. Serial No. 323,060.
The present invention is concerned with the provision of novel means for anchoring a pocket watch on to a belt or on to a strap associated with a belt.
Objects of the invention are to provide a belt to which a pocket watch may be conveniently anchored, and a belt whichrwill be of conventional appearance when the watch is associated therewith.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel type of clip for anchoring the end of a pocket watch chain either to the belt or to the strap of a wrist watch which may be mounted on the belt.
Other and more general objects of the invention are to provide a watch-holding assembly of simple, practical construction which will be neat and attractive in appearance, rugged and durable in use, and well suited to the requirements of economical manufacture.
WVith the above noted and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The invention may be more fully understood from the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation, showing my improved clip associated with a wrist watch strap;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the pocket watch anchoring clip;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary outside elevational view showing my clip attached directly to the belt proper, and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
In connection with the present invention, reference may be had to my co-pending application, Serial No. 256,323, filed February 23, 1928, from which the subject matter of the present application has been divided.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is provided a. belt 10, slit as at 11, to provide for the passage therethrough of a strap 12, which strap may, if desired, be the strap of a conventional wrist watch or may be adapted to carry any other desired attachment. The strap is preferably provided with a slitted aperture 13, to receive therethrough a tongue 14 of my improved clip 15.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 3, the clip 15 comprises a plate 20, the upper and lower edges of which bend rearwardly to provide flanges 21 carrying tabs or ears 22 spaced from the plate 20 and co-operating with the plate to define a guide or channel for the wrist watch strap, which is threaded under the tabs 22. A third downwardly eX tending car 23 is apertured at 24 to receive the end of a chain 25, while the laterally projecting offset tongue 14 integral with the plate 20, is adapted to pass through the opening 13 in the strap 12 and lie behind the opening, thereby securely holding the clip 15 against sliding movement on the strap 12.
Referring mode particularly to Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, there is here disclosed a similar but larger clip 26, which may be anchored directly to the belt by passing its tongue 14 through the slot 11 of the belt and causing it to lie behind the belt. In this instance the clip straddles and is slidable upon the belt itself, being held against sliding movement only-when the tongue 14 is in the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5. One of the slots 11 and the slot 13 are preferably of T- shaped configuration, thereby permitting the ready insertion of the tongue 14 therethrough.
Obviously, various changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the details set forth, but shall consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appending claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A watch chain anchoring clip adapted to be attached to a belt or the like and held against sliding relatively thereto, said clip including a plate adapted to lie on one side of a belt, a pair of integral offset ears at the top and bottom edge of the plate adapted to embrace the belt edges, and an offset lateral- 1y projecting ear adapted to pass through an opening in and lie behind the belt.
2. A device of the class described, co1nprising a clip including a-body, strap-engaging flanges associated therewith, a'n'd an angularly disposed integraltongue adapted to pass through the belt and secure the clip thereto. v I r I q,
3. A device of the class described, 0 0m: prising a clip including a body, strap-engaging flanges associated therewith, anan'gularvly disposed integral tongue adapted to-piass through the belt and secure the clip thereto, and a dependingportion for the association with the clip of a chain V v I A deviceof the class described, comprising a clip including abody, strap-engaging flanges associated therewitlyfl and an angularly disposed integral tongue adapted to pass through the b'elt and secure the clip thereto, said side flanges having inwardly projecting portions adapted for engagement behind said strap.
' Signed at New York, in the-countv of New York and State of New York, this 26th day of November A D. 1928.
