The vertical flanges of the spokes, below the openings through which the oll'set ends oi the teeth 1 .1: pass are provided with other openings for the reeei'ition of securing means 16 for blades 17. The, blades 1'? may be employed in connection with the teeth or indepemlently thereof.
In order to more ellectively hold the drags in road engagement I secure upon the rear member 1 of the frame spaced upwardly di rected rods 18 that pass through openings in a metal beam 19. The outer or upper ends of the rods are threaded. and have screwed thereon nuts 20. Surrounding; the rods and contacting with the beam 19 and the nuts 20 there are helical. springs 21. The ends of the beam are inclined downwardly and are formed with the stub shafts 22 for rollers These rollers disclosed by the drawings are in contactwith the upper face of the rims 11 of the circl'ilar drags adjacent to the outer edges of said (lragx. and consequently exert a pressure upon these portions of the drags to force the outer teeth into greater ground contacting engagement than the inner teeth of the drags.
The rods 25 are pivotally connected to the vertical flanges of the side members 2 of the frami and loosely connected to the beam 1!) and a tl'ord brace means for the said beam and likewise brace means for the sides of the frame.
Hingedlv secured to what I will term the inner side member 2 of the frame, at the front thereof. as indicated by the numeral 26, there 'sa plate 27 which is disposed transversely over the top of the said front of the frame. A rod or bolt member 28 is secured to the frame and asses through an opening in the plate 27. This rod or member is really in the nature of a bolt and is similar to the rods or bolts 18, the same. having screwed on its outer end a nut 21 that compresses a helical spring arranged on. the rod or bolt 28 against the plate 27. The outer end of the plate has either secured thereto or formed therewith a (lownwardlv extending portion that merges into a stub shaft on which. there isjour aled a roller 30 that is in contacting engagement with the under face of what I. will term the outer side of the rim of the front drag. A
pivotally supported brace rod 31 is loosely connected to on side of the frame and to the plate 27, as clearly disclosed by lligures 1 and 2 of the drawings. The drags are loose 1y mounted upon their stub shafts and, there" fore. liable to a free turning and to a (ranting movement thereon. By reference to Figure 3 of the d rawinus it will be seen that the weighted and spring inliuenccd frame 1 carries the wheels that contact with the outer and rea faces of the rim of the drag to impart a slight canting r angle movement to the drag; end or outer teeth of the frame. It will thus be noted that the outer and rear teeth of the drags are brought into greater Contact with the road surface than the inner and forward teeth of the said drags and it is by virtue of such contact that the drags are caused to rotate. lhe weight imparted to the top of the back part of the rotating drags so arranged as to prevent the rotating drags from flying up in the event of the front portions thereof striking any perceptible elevation in the ground surface and the tension springs on the top afford a relief to the drag so contacted that the breakage thereof will be prevented.
The direct ion of the turning of the front and rear drags is indicated by the arrows in Figure 1.
The rollers that cne'a the rear portions of the rear drags are for distinction indicated by the numeral 32 and are journaled on stub shafts on. the ends of members 33, the said members extending from the rear member 1 of the frz-nnc. The roller for the rear of the front drag is indicated by the numeral and is journaled on the spindle of a member that is secured to the transverse brace element 3.
The improven'ient is of a con'iparatively simple nature and may be cheaply manufactured and e: sily operated. Cf course the frame may be n'ovided with a seat for the operator which, of course, is especially desirable should the drag be drawn by draft animals but prefm'ably the dra is of such weight and size that the employment of a tractor for pulling the same will be required. The construction and advantages of the improvement will, it is thought. he nude stood and a ipreciatcd by those skilled in the art to which such in vention relates.
Having. described the invention I claim:
1. A road drag comprising a substantially triangular frame having a draft hitch at the apex thereof, circular drags loosely and freely journaled at the front and at the rear corners of the frame, each of said drags including an inner hub portion and an outer rim portion and radially disposed angle spokes connecting the hub and rim, said spokes having their horizontal flanges provided with spaced openings and their vertical flanges provided with similar openings, a
tooth passing through each of the vertical openings and having an offset end received through the horizontal openings, means for removably securing the teeth on the spokes,
' spring influenced means carried by the frame and contacting with the upper faces adjacent to the outer portions of the rims of the drags for canting and influencing the outer teeth of the drags into ground contacting engagement andmeans contactable with the rims at the rear of the drags for limiting the upward canting such portions of the drags beyond a predetermined degree when such drags meet with an obstruction.
2. A. road drag comprising a substantially triangular frame having a draft hitch at the apex thereof, circular drags loosely and freely journaled at the front and at the rear cornersof the frame, each of said drags including an inner hub portion and an outer rim portion and radially disposed angle spokes connecting the hub and rim, said spokes having their horizontal flanges provided with spaced openings and their vertical flanges provided with similar openings, a tooth passing through each of the vertical openings and having an offset end received through the horizontal openings, means for i'einovably securing the teeth on the spokes, scraper blades removably secured to the spokes of the drags, weighted spring influenced means carried by the frame and having rotatable elements for contacting with the upper faces adjacent to the outer portions of the rims of the drags for canting and influencing the teeth on such portions of the drags into ground contacting engagement and rotatable elements carried by said means contactable with the rims at the rear of the drags for limitiug the upward swinging of such portions of the drags when such drags meet with an obstruction.
3.
