Description

l. H. FRANK 1,728,992
INTERCHANGEABLE BLADE HOLDER WITH LOCKING DEVICE Sept. 24, 1929.
Filed Aug. lO, 1928 Wn ,m B 4mm w m 2 JH a Patented Sept. 24, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT -OFFICE ma H. FRANK, or CHICAGO, ILLiNors INTERCHANGEADLE BLADE HOLDER WITH LOCKING DEVICE Appucamn ined Augen 1o, 192s. serial No. zeste?.
One oi the main objects of this inventionv is to provide a blade holding device with means for positively retaining or locking the blade holder with. its blade'in various selective positions in the handle, which positions preferably include 51st, the knife closed and lo in locked position; 2nd, the holder with blade swung 90 from closed position to a partly open position and locked; 3rd, the holder with blade swung 180O from closed position andlocked in a straight open position; 4th,
i5' the holder with blade swung 270o from closed position and locked in its extreme open posiu tion.
A further object is to provide such a device wherein the blades are readily removable and exchangeable in the blade holder, to provide for employing the particular kind of blade which is best adapted for the particular use; and which device is so arranged that the holder with its selected blade may be positioned at a large number' of various angles in the handle; so as to adapt this device for a large number of various uses; such as a seam ripper, a thread cutter, a razor, a
clipper, a scraper, a cigar cutter, etc.
Other objects and advantages, in addition to the above enumerated ones, will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which- Figs. 1 and 2 are respectively, edge view and Side View of my improved blade holder with knife blade therein, locked in the closed position in the handle;
Fig. 3 shows the holder withV blade locked in the partly open position in the handle;
Fig. 4 shows the holder with blade locked in the extreme open position in the handle;
Fig. 5 shows the holder with blade placed unlocked in the straight open or second position in the handle;
Figs. 6 and 7 are enlarged cross-sections on lines 6 6 and 7 M7 of Fig. 2, and
F ig. 8 shows various kinds of blades which are interchangeably mountable in the holder, to adapt the device for many different uses.
In the drawing I have illustrated an embodiment of rny invention, presenting it in a certain form, which comprises a handle 10, preferably made channel-shaped and of sheet metal or other suitable material.
A blade holder or holding fnien'lbcr 11, also channel-shaped and preferably of sheet metal or other suitable material, is swing'ably mounted between lips 10 on one end of handle 10, so as tobe snugly received between the channel parts of the handle, as indicated in the drawing. The portions 12 near the side 'edges' of the holder are bent inward from the intermediate channel portion and are positioned close together, and, as this holder is made of resilient material, these edge portions 12 will clamp and lirml hold the knife 'blade therebetween; While t e larger enannel portion provides sufficient room for receiving and housing the thickened or reenforced portion 13 of a certain type of blade 111, to accommodate such types of blades as well as the usual type as illustrated by blade 15 in Fig. 8, which is thin throughout. The blades are all readily slid lengthwise into or out of the holder, andi when the device is closed the blade is housed Within the holder and handle.
Means is provided for positively holding or locking the holder with the blade in certain selected positions in the handle, and this means preferably includes a pin 16 firmly mounted in one of said members 10 or 11 and having corners or angular portions 17 thereon; while the other of said members 10 or 11 is provided with a portion having an opening or bore 18 for rotatably receivingI the pin,
and a notch 19 extending from said bore and l made to conform to the angularity of said portions 17 of the pin so as to hold said pin firmly and prevent turning thereof; thus preventing relative turning of members 10 and l1 on each other as soon as the angular portions 17 of the pin have been moved into said notch 19.
In the drawing'V the pin 16 has been shown, for the purpose of illustration merely, as having four'angular portions or corners, and the notchl 19 is illustrated correspondingly, which y form provides for four locking positions of the holder in the handle, but it is made clear that the number of angular portions on the pin and the number of locking positions ofthe holder with its blade in the handle will be increased or decreased as the particular customer may desire.
The holder 11 is provided with a finger or lug 21, bent upfrom its outer end, which is adapted-to enter a notch 22 in the handle 10 as the device is being closed, and which moves into an'under-cut portion 22', extending from said notch, as the holder with its blade is slidv longitudinally of the handle, whereby the angular portion 17 of pin 16 is slid from bore 18 into notch 19, thereby locking the device in its closed position, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The holder with its blade is, y a similar sliding movement longitudinally of the holder, likewise locked and retained in its lvarious other positions, as clearly shown in the drawing.
The handle 10 is also provided with aade- `r pressed portion 23 having a hole or bore 24 therein, adapted to receive the small end of a cigar 25, as indicated in Fig. 6, thereby furthermore adapting this device as a cigar cutter.
From the above description and the drawing it is apparent that I have provided a greatly improved device, wherein the holder is constructed to hold a large variety of styles of knife blades, and wherein means is provided or locking and positively holding this IRA H. FRANK.
holder with its blade in various selected posiv tions in the handle; thus adapting this device for a great variety of uses, and also assuring against any accidental swinging of the holder with blade in the handle from the certain vselected positions, thereby preventing injury to the user. It is furthermore apparent from the above that the holder with its blade may be locked in the closed position, as in Fig. 2;
and in the consecutive or successive open positions; as a quarter turn or 90 from the closed position, as in Fig. 3; a lhalf turn or 180, as in Fig. 5; and three-quarter turn or 270, as in Fig. 4; thus adapting this device respectively,
' as a seam-putter or ripper, a thread and twine cutter, and a razor and scraper, aswell as providing a clipper and cigar-cutter by closing the device. The device may also be used in various unlocked intermediate positions, for various purposes.-
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters 4Patent is:
A device comprising a handle member, a f
blade holding member swngably connected thereto, and means for locking said members in various positions, said means including a pin with angular portions provided on one of said members, while the other of said mem- -bers is provided with a portion containing a bore for rotatably holding said pin and a notch on vsaid bore for receiving the angular portions of the pin to prevent relative swingiso
