UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EARLE B. STEWART AND AMY STEWART, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN CORSET I Application filed May 31,
Our invention relates to improvements in corsets, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of our invention is to provide a corset which has a novel means for concealing the adjustments in order that the outer portion of the corset may be relatively smooth and obviate the possibility of the adjustable portions showing through the outer garments of the user.
A further object of our invention is to provide a corset of the type described which has novel means for drawing the concealing portion taut, irrespective of the position of the adjustable portion.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and th novel features. of the invention will be particularly 2o pointed out in the appended claims.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our'invent-ion as applied to the user,
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view illustrating our invention,
Figure 3 is the same as Figure 2 with the concealing flap cut away at the top and moved I by the user. The user in adjusting the por- 80 to one side, and
Figure 4 is a modified form'of our invention.
In carrying out our invention, we provide a'corset having a body portion indicated generally at 1. The body portion 1 is provided with adjustable portions A and B upon each side thereof which are identical in construction, and a description of one will apply to 927. Serial No. 195,472.
A non-elastic concealing means or cover 9 is secured to the body portion 1 at 10 and to thenon-elastic portion 2 at 11. A garter 12 is secured to the lower extremity of the body portion 1 at 13. Another garter 14 having a fastening means 15 is provided with an elastic strip 16 and a non-elastic strip 16', one of which is secured to the body portion 1 at 17 and the other secured to the concealing means or cover 9 at 18. A s ngle reinforc ing strip 19 is secured to the longitudinal free edge of the concealing means or cover 9. A relatively wide or double reinforcing strip 20 extends from the point 18 in a direct line to the mid point of the upper edge of the cover 9 and is secured to the cover. These strips serve as reinforcing means for the cover for holding the cover smooth and taut, irrespective of the positions of the members 4 and v 5 with respect to each other. 1
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. In attaching the corset to the user, the body portion is secured together in the ordinary manner, or by any suitable means, such as by hooks and eyes, not shown. The laces in the adjustable portions A and B at this time are loose so that the portions A and B may be adjusted as desired tions A and B may move the cover 9 to one side and draw the members 4 and 5 toward a each other the laces until the proper adjustment has been made. Then by tying the laces in the usualmanner, the cover 9 may be brought back into its natural position. The garters 12 and 14 may then beggsecured to the hose, indicated at 21. In securing the garter 14 to the hose, the elastic strip 16 and the non-elastic strip 16 draw the cover 9 taut. 9 In this manner, the adjustable portions, that is the laces and the adjacent parts, are always covered by the concealing means.
In Figure 4, we have shown a modified form of our device in which the body portion" 1 is provided with a back adjustable portion C. A concealing means or cover 30 is secured to the body portion 1 at 31 and extends down.- wardly over the adjustable portion G. Garters 32 and 33 are provided with elastic por- 1 tions or strips 34 and 35 and non-elastic strips 34' and 35, respectively. One end of the strip 3a is secured to the lower portion of the concealing means or cover 30 at 36 and the other end is secured to one end of the non-elastic strip 84' which has its other end secured to the body portion 1. The strip 35 is secured to the concealing means or cover 30 at 37 at one end thereof and to one end of the non-- elastic strip 35' at the other end. The other end of the strip 35 is secured to the body portion 1. As the garters 32 and 33 are secured to the hose, not shown, the elastic strips draw the cover 30 taut over the adjustable portion G.
We claim: 1. A garment of the type described comprising a body portion having spaced-apart edges, a non-elastic portion disposed between and secured to the edges of said body portion at one end thereof, adjustable members secured to the edges of said body portion and extending from said non-elastic portion to the other end of said body portion, means for securing said adjustable members together adjacent said non-elastic portion, means for drawing said adjustable members toward each other, a cover for said adjustable members secured to one of the edges of said body portion and to said non-elastic portion, and
a garter having a supporting strip provided with one end secured to said cover and the other end secured to said body portion whereby drawingforce applied to said garter may cause said strip to draw said cover over said adjustable members.
2. A garment of the type described comprising a body portion having spaced-apart edges, a non-elastic portion disposed between and secured to the edges of said body portion at one end thereof, adjustable members secured to the edges of said body portion and extending from said non-elastic portion to the other end of said body portion, means for securing saidv adjustable members together adjacent said non-elastic portion, means for drawing said adjustable members toward each other, a cover for said adjustable members secured to one of the edges of said body portion and to said non-elastic portion, a garter having a supporting strip provided with one end secured to said cover and the other end secured to said body portion whereby drawing force applied to said garter may cause said strip to draw said cover over said adjustable members, and an elastic gore disposed between said body portion and said non-elastic portion and extending to said COVeI'.
