Description
Sept. i7, "1929. A. PIERCE STORAGE BATTERY CONNECTER Filed Aug. 23, 1925 Patented \Sept. 17, 1929 PATENT OFFICE ALDRID PIERCE, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS STORAGE-BATTERY CONNECTER Application filed August 23, 1926. Serial No. 130,983.
This invention relates to 'improvements in connecters, it being specially designed for use in connecting conductor wires to the terminals of storage batteries, and particularly those used in conjunction with automobiles, one object of the invention being the provision of a connecter which is easily attached to the terminal from either side thereof as there is no top or bottom to the connectenthere being provided cooperating or coacting means carried by the connecter for biting into without injuriously affecting the terminal, and at l the same time providing an easy means for release from the terminal when'desired.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a connecter of this type which insures a positive electrical connection at this point, thus avoiding, to a great extent, the corroding of the terminals and connectors as an objectionable feature to the present type of slip-on clamp connecter.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper end et' a storage battery with the present connecter in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the connecter, dotted lines indicating the position of the terminal of the battery.
"Referring to the drawings, A designates the battery, B the terminal and C the present connecter.
This connecter is made substantially an integral member and consists of the body 5 having the elongated opening 6 therethrough of a size to readily accommodate the various diametered and tapered terminals B in general use. Formed upon the wall of the opening 6 at the enlarged end thereot` are two. series of cutting projections, teeth or ribs 7 and 7 which are substantially parallel to the upper and lower edges of the connecter, there being provided a recess or slot 8 which extends the full height of' the connecter and separates the two series of teeth, this being provided for the insertion of a tool to assist in the removal of the present connecter from theterininal. when desired. The end 9 of the connecter is provided with. a threaded aperture 9 for the reception of the thumb or wing locking screw or bolt 10 which, as illustrated, is diametrically opposed, or substantially so, to the biting members 7 and 7 so that when the terminal is positioned within the connecter and the screw is tightened, the parts assume the position as clearly illustrated in Figure 3, and thus insure a positive electrical connection between the terminal and the connecter without great injury to the terminal, and at the same time, being embedded in the terminal at opposite sides insures a non-corrosive connection so that greater life is the result both to the terminal and the connecter.
To insure the ready securing or detaching of the connecter from the terminal, a wrenchreceiving shouldered portion 11 is provided at the opposite side to the screw 10, and in this manner, the connecter may be held with a wrench or pliers, While the screw 10 is manipulated for fixedly connecting or releasing the connecter. i
lVhere desired, the socket 12 is formed with the bendable tanks or prongs 13 for engagement with the conductor 14, but in most cases, this conductor is sweated or soldered in the socket 12, so that the connecter C is bodily carried thereby and positively connected therewith.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that with a connector made according to and embodying-the present inventionnthe same is readily connected to or detached from the present terminal constructions, and due to the fact that there is no top o'r bottom to the connecter, the same is easily attached without twisting or turning the conductor 14, and thus placing any torsional strain thereon. At the same time, by means of the screw 10, the present connecter is readily secured to insure positive biting action between its inner end where it engages the terminal and the teeth 7 and 7 where they engage the terminal.
I claim 1. A terminal connecter, including a member having a termin:1l-receiving' opening. a portion ot the wall of which is provided with a plurality of'gripping cutting projectimis. and a set screw diamctrically opposed to the projections for cooperating with the projections to bitingly grip the terminal, the Wall of the opening adjacent the projections being provided with :L recess.
5 2. A terminal connecter, including a. inember having si terminal-receiving opening', :L portion of the W111i of which is provided with u plurality of gripping cutting projections, :L set Screw dininetrically opposed to the projectionh` for cooperating with the projections to bitingly grip the terminal, :uid a. shouldered projection integral with the exterior of the member, the wall of the openingr adjacent the projections being` provided with :L recess.
