Description

Se t. 17, 1929. H. STAVOSTRAND 1,728,840
RELAY Filed Aug. 17. 1927 1 replacing the usual journal Patented Sept. 17, 1929 PATENT OFFICE HARALD s'rAvos'rnANn, or osLo,
NORWAY REL AY Application filed August 17, 1927, Serial No.
The relay which is the matter ot'the present application for patent is designed more particularly for use in telegraphic service and to work by influence of weak direct current.
The object stated is attained by means of a, novel combination and arrangements 0 parts to be hereinafter described and claimed and in order that the same may be better understood reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and showing a side view ofthe improved relay.
In the drawing 1, 2 designate the coils ota pair of electromagnets, 8, 1 cores of soft iron belonging to the same, and 5, 6 designate pole pieces. 7 is a permanent magnet energizing permanently the cores 3, 4.
The armature 8 of the electromagnets is.
provided with a projecting sharp edge 9 by means of which it rests on the pole piece 6 of the electromagnet 2 so as to be tilted on the same. The armature is supported bya leaf spring 10 which is secured to a wire 11 connected to a screw 12. The latter may be adjusted axially by means of the nut 13 so the tension of the spring 10 the as to control and the pressure of the anchor against pole piece 6.
let designates an arm secured to the armature 8 and provided with contact pieces arranged in well known manner so as to make contact with one or another of the fixed contacts 15 and 16.
It will be understood that the armature is permanently kept in place by the energized cores 3, 4:. Instead of using a permanent magnet for such purposes a special electromagnet may be used or a special energizing coil as it will 'be easily understood by all skilled in the art. i
In order to obtain a rapid action of the relay the weight of the armature may be reduced to a minimum. The usual friction force in the bearing is in this case avoided by hearing of the armature with the said tilting edge.
Owing to the fact that the iron cores are permanently energized the advantages are obtained that the relay may also work by rapidly 213,612, and in Norway August 20, 1926.
double current, that it works upon the most favourable part (the steepest portion) of the magnetic curve; that the armature owing to the greater tension of feather is moved more and may eonsequentlybe used for greater telegraphing speed than usual direct current relays.
\Vhen transferring the motions of the armature to an undulating needle the device may also be used as an undul'ator for recording vibratory motions of the anchor.
Claims:
1. A relay of the class described, comprising a magnetized horseshoe magnet having pole pieces and also provided with coils havmg soft cores united to the arms of the magnet, an armature having a pivoting edge bearing against one of the pole pieces, an arm secured to and extending from the armature in one direction and provided at the free end with contacts, spaced fixed contacts between which said contacts of said arm operate, a spring arm extending from the armature in the opposite direction and supporting and tensioning means for the free end of said spring arm.
2.In a relay, a pair of electromagnets, each having a coil and a soft iron core, means for permanently energizing the same, a smooth pole-piece, an armature having a sharp tilting edge contacting with the polepiece and means for supporting the armature.
3. In a relay, a pair of electromagnets each having a coil and a soft iron core, means for permanently energizing the same, a smooth pole-piece, an armature having a sharp tilting edge contacting with the polepiece, a supporting leaf spring, means for regulating the tension of the spring and contacts coacting with a contact tongue on the armature.
In witness whereof I afiix my signature.
