UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN ADAMs KNIGHT, OF AUBURN, AND LEVI ABBOTT, or LEWISTON, ME.
IMPROVEMENT m SH'AM PILLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 72,859, dated February 1, 1876; application filed March26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN A. KNIGHT, of Auburn, and LEVI ABBOTT, of Lewiston, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Sham Pillow; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact descriptionof the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which The figure in the drawing represents a perspective view of the invention, having a portion of .its exterior removed.
This invention has for its object the-production of a sham pillow that will'retain its original form, will be light and durable, and will not harbor dust or vermin; and to these ends itvconsists in a new article of manufacture, composed of a light but stiff frame of the" proper form, covered with heavy paper or pasteboard and ticking, or ticking alone, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing one method of practising the invention is shown.
The rectangular frame A, of wood, or other light material, is provided with corner blocks B for strengthening it. The wires 0 and G are curved at each end, and traverse the frame A, from end to end, on its upper and lowersides. The wires E and E traverse the frame A in a similarmanner at its center, and at right angles to the wires 0 C. The corner wires F F are bent so that the curved arms'G G traverse the frame laterally, until they reach the first wires 0 or G, and the curved arms H H traverse the frame diagonally un- .til they reach the first wires 0 or O. The
. to take the place of the genuine pillow when the latter is not required for use.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is As a new article of manufacture, a sham pillow, consisting of a shell composed of a rectangular frame, of wood or other material,
provided with a series of spring or other wires, some of which traverse it wholly from side to side, and end to end, and others partially from the sides toward the longitudinal center, and from the corners diagonally toward the center, said wires being curved at their ends to cause the pillow, when completed, to assume the A form of an ordinary pillow, the entireframe being covered, substantially as hereinbefore described.
JOHN ADAMS KNIGHT. LEVI ABBOTT.
