My inventionrelates to an improved printers chase, the object being to arrange means for securely lockin the type in position, by parts embodied in the construction of the frame, and adapted to the necessary adjustments therefor.
The essential object of the device is to provide means for locking, squaring and centering' the type in the frame, by combinational adjusting parts and unattachable therefrom, thus eliminating the use of furniture, quoins and other removable and loose parts as are in present use for squaring and locking the type in the frame.

The frame A embodies two corresponding rectangular shaped sections a and a, right angled in cross section, and adapted to be securely fastened together into channeled formation, by fastening screws B, or by any other suitable method.
Suitably j ournalled in each of the sides of the frame A, within the channel formation are reciprocal screws C and D, and journailed in each of the ends of the fame are reciprocal screws 15 and F, each of the screws being centrally divided into right and left turns, for the purpose hereinafter described.
The screws are journalled at each corner of the frame A,in pillow blocks G, formed integral with the frame.
Journalled in parallel relation with the screw i is a connecting" rod H, and journalled in. parallel relation with the screw D is a similar connecting rod 1.
Keyed on one end of the screw C is a small bevel pinion c, and keyed on each end of the rod H, are bevel pinions h and 72/ respectively.
Keyed on the end of the screw D is a corresponding bevel pinion (Z. The pinions d and is are in mesh with one another, but

The screws E and F pass through interiorly screw threaded bores formed in the ends of the rods or bars LL so that by turning the screws in either direct-ion the bars LL will travel on the screws and adjust towards or away from one another in unison, accordingly with the direction in which the pinion M is turned.
To square and lock the type in the chase, the loose type is placed in the center section marked N, formed by the two cross bars K-K and LL, a key is inserted in the seat j and the pinion is turned in the direction of the frame until the adjustment is checked by contacting with the type.
The same adjustment is made to the longitudinal bars L-L, by inserting a key or tool into the seat formed in the head of the pinion M, the pinion is then turned in a direction to cause the bars LL to travel on the screws E and F towards the center of the frame A until the adjustment is checked by engaging against the sides of the block of type. The type is by this means securely held in the center of the chase.
Torelease and remove the type from the chase, the respective pinions J and M are turned in the direction to adjust the two sets of screws in directions that will cause the bars KK and L-L to travel outwardly or towards the sides and ends of the frame.
Slight modifications may be made in the relation to the gears and the method of adjusting them to turn the screws, without deviating from the nature of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A printers chase comprising a rectangular frame consisting of two angular sections secured together into channel formation, reciprocal screws journalled in the sides and ends of said frame, cross and longitudinal bars screw mounted on said reciprocal screws, bevel gears keyed on the ends of said screws, a connecting rod mounted in the side of said frame andin gear connection with the'reciprocal screws in the ends of theframe, and a connecting-rod mounted in the end of the frame and being in gear connection with the reciprocal screws in the sides of the frame, bevel gears journalled in two oppositely opposed angles of said frame, said gears being in mesh with gears keyedrespectively on the ends of the reciprocal screws in one direction and the connecting rod in the other direction, key seats formed in the said gears by which the gears may be turned to actuate the respective rods and screws for adjusting the cross and longitudinal bars towards or away from one another, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A printers chase comprising a rectangular frame consisting of two angular sections secured together into channel formation, reciprocal screw rods journalled in the sides and ends of said frame, bevel gears keyed on the ends of said screw rods, connecting rods having gears keyed on the ends thereof mounted in one side of said frame said rods the screws in mesh therewith will turn in unison, cross and longitudinal bars screw mounted on said screws, the said cross and longitudinal bars being adapted to adjust towards and away from each other by the turning of the said screws, as and for the purpose specified.
