Secured to the side bars 20 and 21 in rear of the cutters G are two intermediate transverse bars and 41. These two bars 40 and 41 together with the rear or end bar 23 con stitute a road smoothing means. These bars are disposed in a horizontal plane above the teeth 34 of the cutters G and function to smooth the dirt cut by the cutters C.
It is desirable to raise or lower the carriage B relative to the main frame A so as to position the cutters C at difierent elevations relative to the road surface. It is also desirable to provide means for raising or lowering either or both sides of the carriage B so as to position said carriage in a plane relative to the horizontal in accordance with the surface of the road. To this end, I have mounted upon the supplemental frame a pair of alined operating shafts 42 and 43, said shafts being journaled at their outer ends in supporting posts 44 and 45, and attheir inner, endsin a common supporting post 46. A hand wheel47 is fixed to the shaft42, and a hand wheel 48 is fixed to the shaft 43. A front cable 49 has its rear end fixed to the shaft 42 and its, front end fixed to thefront end of the right hand side of the carriage B, said cable being trained over an idler 50 journaled on the longitudinally eX- tending arm 18 'of the supplemental frame and located at a point directly above the point of connection between the cable 49 and the carriage B. A rear cable 51 has its upper end fixed to the shaft 42 and its lower end fixed to the rear end of the right hand side of the carriage B; Thusby rotating the shaft42 towards the left, as viewed in Fig. 1, both the cables 49 and 51 will be wound therearound, and consequently the right hand side of the carriage B will be elevated, and if the shaft 42 is turned in the reverse direction the right hand side of the carriage will be lowered. A front cable 52 has one end trained over an idler 53, similar in position to the idler 50, and the extreme front end portion of said cable is connected to thefront portion of the lefthand side of the carriageB. A rear cable 54 has one end fixed to the shaft 43 and the lower end fixed to the rear portion of the left hand side of the carriage B. Thus when the shaft 43 is turned towards the left, as viewed in Fig; 1, the left hand side of the carriage B will be elevated. It will be observed that the raising and lowering means as thus described will be dependent relative'to each other. In order to support the weight of the carriage B, and thereby relieve the operator from supporting this weight, I have provided the shafts 42 and 43 with ratchet wheels 55 and 56 respectively. Associated with each ratchet wheel is a locking dog 57 which is normally held in engagement with the wheel by means of a spring 58. A foot control lever 59 is asso' 'ciated with each dog 57 so as to release said dog whenever it is desired to lower the carriage B.
It is also desirable to provide means for guiding the carriage B in a vertical direction whenever said carriage is being raised or lowered, and to this end, I have provided each of the side bars 7 and 8 with front and rear vertically disposed guides 60 and 61, and fixed to the side bars 20 and 21 of the carriage B are front and rear guide pins 62 and 63 which respectively cooperate with the vertical guides 60 and 61.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that I have provided a road grading machine which includes a wheeled main frame and a carriage supported thereon for vertical movements; a plurality of cutter blades mounted on the front part of the carriage; a plurality of smoothing arms mounted on the rear part of the carriage, and means for raising or lowering either or both sides of said carriage whereby the carriage may be angularly adjusted relative to the horizontal to meet different road surface conditions. It will also be observed that the cutters are constructed and supported whereby they may-be readily reversed or interchanged whenever the occasion arises.
It is of course to be understood that the details of structure and arrangements of parts may be variously changed and modified with out departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a road grading machine, the combination with a wheeled main frame, of a carriage supported thereon for vertical movements, vertically disposed guides fixed to the main frame adjacent the front and rear ends and on each side thereof, guide pins fixed to the carriage for cooperation with the guides, separate means for raising and lowering each side of said carriage, and a plurality of roadengaging cutters fixed to said carriage.
2. In a road grading machine, the combination with a wheeled main frame, of a carriage supported thereon for vertical move ments, means for raising and lowering said carriage comprising a pair of alined operating shafts supported transversely adjacent the rear end of the main frame, a pair of front and rear cables connecting each shaft with the front and rear ends of the associated side of the frame, idlers journaled on the frame directly above the respective points of connections between the front cables and the carriage, and a plurality of road-engaging cutters fixed to said'carriage.
3. In a road grading machine, the combina tion with a wheeled main frame, of a carriage supported thereon for vertical movements,
means for raising and lowering said carriage comprising a pair of alined operating shafts supported transversely adjacent the rear end of the main frame, a pair of front and rear cables connecting each shaft with the front and rear ends of the associated side of the frame, idlers journaled on the frame directly above the respective points of connections between the front cables and the car riage, manual means for independently rotating said shafts, aratchet mechanism for retaining the shaft against movement in any position of adjustment of said carriage, separate foot cont-rolled means associated with each ratchet mechanism, and a plurality of road-engaging cutters fixed to said carriage.
4. In road grading machines, cutters adapted to be drawn over the roads to scarify the said roads, each cutter comprising a metal plate having its lower forward portion cutaway to forma plurality of stepped cutting teeth extending downwardly in a diagonal plane from the front edge of the plate to the bottom edge thereof.
5. In a road grading machine, the combination with a main wheeled frame, of a carriage supported thereon for vertical movements, independent cable connections at each side of the carriage, independent winding devices associated with the cable connections for raising and lowering the respective sides of the carriage independently of each other, a ratchet mechanism for retaining each of the winding devices against movement in any position of adjustment of said carriage, separate foot controlled means associated with each ratchet mechanism, and a plurality of road engaging cutters fixed to said carriage.
6. In road grading machines, cutters adapt-' ed to be drawn over the roads to scarify the said roads, each cutter comprising a met-a1 plate having its lower forward portion and its upper rear portion cut-away to form a lower front and an upper rear plurality of stepped cutting teeth, each plurality extending diagonally downwardly from front to rear, and means to reversibly mount the cutters so that either of the upper or lower pluralities of teeth may be presented to the road.
7. In road grading machines, cutters adapt-' ed to be drawn over the roads to scarify the said roads, each cutter comprising a metal plate having its lower forward portion and its upper rear portion cutaway to form a lower front and an upper rear plurality of stepped cutting teeth, each plurality extending diagonally downwardly from front to rear, and means to reversibly mount the cutters so that either'of the upper or lower pluralities of teeth may be presented to the road, said mounting means comprising a pivot for the forward portion of each tooth and means to abut the rearward portion of each tooth against upward movement about its pivoted mounting.
8. A road scarifying means comprising a frame including front, rear, side and spaced transverse bars, and spaced longitudinal bars oinmg certain of the transverse bars; and
cutters carried by the frame and adapted to means to pivot the advance end of each cutter to a longitudinal bar with a portion thereof extending below the frame to engage the road and with its trailing end constrained against gpward movement by an adjacent transverse 9. A road scarifying means comprising a frame including front, rear, side and spaced transverse bars, and spaced longitudinal bars joining certain of the transverse bars, all of said bars being positioned in a common horizontal plane; and cutters carried by the frame and adapted to be drawn over the roads to scarify the said roads, each cutter comprising a metal plate having its lower forward portion and its upper rear portion cut-away to form a lower front and an upper rear plurality of stepped cutting teeth, each plurality extending diagonally downwardly from front to rear, and means to pivot the advance end of each cutter to a longitudinal bar toward the foremost part of the frame with a portion thereof extending below the frame to engage the road and with its trailing end constrained against upward movement by an adjacent transverse bar.
