dmmz ATTQREYI A Patented Sept. 17, 1929 PATENT OFFICE EDMUND MAGERLE, OF
VI NNA, AUSTRIA, ASSIGNOR 'ro THE FIRM WENGRAF &
PLATZER, F VIENNA, AUSTRIA AIR-PUR IFYING APPARATUS Application filed December 24, 1923, Serial No. 682,590, and in Austria July 7, 1923.
The object of myinvention is to provide apparatus for purifying air, combining the advantages of eificiency and economy, of increasing the moisture content of the air, and
of enabling disinfectants, perfumes and the liquid to be introduced into the air in a state of very fine division without precipitation in the form of drops.
The invention is illustrated in the accom- I Fig. 3 is a front view, partly broken away, g of a wall bracket or support forming part of the apparatus. The apparatus shown comprises a boiler comprising two concentric water containers 1' and 2 with an air spac 3 between them. A pipe 4 connects-these two containers above the water level, and a pipe 5 connects them below the water level, so that the water in them is at the same level. The pipe 5 is of comparatively small diameter so that there so can be no energetic circulation of water, and the enerat-ing of steam is confined to the in ner container 1, which is the smaller .one,
without heatin the water in the outer container to a hig temperature, so that steam can be raised very quickly.
Around the boiler there is an annular container 6 for liquid disinfectant, perfume or the like. By this concentric arrangement of the containers the centre of gravity is kept in 4 the central axis of the generator, and the ap-= paratus is very compact.
The container 6 has an inlet for filling it, closed by a screw plug 7, and an outlet closed by a screw plug 8. The boiler stands upon a hollow pedestal 9 containing an electric heater 10 surrounding the lower part of the container 1, which extends into the pedestal. Thecontainer 1 has a steam dome 11 with a steam nozzle 12, bent upwards. at the tip. A
tube extending into the container 6, has a nozzle 13, whose orifice is directly below the orifice of the nozzle 12 so that the suctional effect of the jet of steam issuing from the nozzle 12' draws finely divided or atomized liquid from the container 6. Owing to the upward bend of the nozzle 12 the jet of steam does not impinge on the nozzle 13 and con sequently there is no condensation at this part. Moreover, the upward bend increases the range of the jet, the mixture being thrown upwards and well distributed in the room.
The use of an electric heater is highly con venient as it enables the apparatus to be put into operation very quickly wherever electric power is available. The ap aratiis can be made portable, so that it can be placed upon a table in any convenient part of the room, and can be used in lecture halls, theatres and other public places. In a theatre, for example, it may be joined up to the lighting circuit, parallel with the lamps, so that it is put into operation during the intervals when the lights are turned on.
. The electric heater 10 is put out of operation automatically when the water has fallen to a certain level, so that there is no risk of burning the boiler. The boiler stands upon a plate 14 upon which the pedestal engages a flanged guide 15, and is made fast by a screw. The plate 14 is hinged at 17 to a support or bracket 16, and its free end rests upon a plunger 19 carried by a spring 18. The latter is adjustable by means of a screw 20. The terminals of the heating resistance 10 are electrically connected to two contacts 21, which in the position shown in 1 face two pivoted contact arms 22, thrust against them by springs 23. The springs 23 are connected, respectively, to the two service cables 24.- Instead of the plunger 19 and spring 18 I may use a weight arranged to produce an equivalent lift.
When the boiler is filled with water it depresses the plunger 19 and the parts occupy the position shown in Fig. 1 the electric circuit being then closed. When the boiler has been lightened to a certain degree by the eva oration of water the spring 18 tilts it, by lifting the plate 14, and in due course the contact is broken at 21, 22 as shown in Fig.2
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In an apparatus for injecting steam into the atmosphere a steam generator comprising in combination a water container of annular cross section, a second water container, part of which is surrounded by said annular container and part of which extends beyond the lower, end of said annular container, there being between said second container and said annular container an air space to which neither container is open, a pipe connecting said containers to each other below the water level, a pipe connecting said containers with each other above the water level, and a heater for heating said second container, said heater surrounding that part of said second container which extends beyond the lower end of said annular container.
' 2. In an apparatus for injecting steam into the atmosphere a steam generator comprising in combination a water container of annular cross-section, a second water container, part of which is surrounded by said annular container and part of which extends beyond the lower end of said annular container, there being between said second container and said annular container an air space to which neither container is open, a pipe connecting said containers to each other below the water level, a pipe connecting said containers with each other above the water level, a heater for heating said second container, said heater surrounding that part of said second container which extends beyond the lower end of said annular container, means for putting said heater out of action, a support, a plate pivoted at one edge thereof to said support, said containers standing on said plate, and means for automatically tilting said plate when the water falls to a predetermined level, the means for putting said heater out of action being operated by the tilting of said late. I 3. In an apparatus for injecting steam into the atmosphere a steam generator comprising in combination a water container of annular cross-section, a second water container, part of which is surrounded by said annular container and part of which extends beyond the lower end of said annular container, there being-between said second container and said annular container an air space to which neither container is open, a pipe connecting said containers to each other below the water level, a pipe connecting said containers with and said heater thereto{'and means for auto matically tilting said plate when the water falls to a predetermined level, the means for putting said heater out of action being operated by the tilting of said plate.
4. In an apparatus for injecting steam into the atmosphere a steam generator comprising in combination a water container of annular cross-section, a second water container, part of which is surrounded by said annular container and part of which extends beyond the lower end of said annular container, there being between said second container and said annular container an air space to which neither container is open, a pipe connecting said containers to each other below the water level, a pipe connecting said containers with each other above the water level, a heater for heating said second container, said heater surrounding that part of said second container which extends beyond the lower end' fication.
