IMPROVEMENT l-N PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,842, dated February 1, 1876; application led September 13, 1875.

Be it known 4that I, WILLIAM DAVID BAX- TER, of New York city, county and Stateof New York, have invented 'certain Improvements in Pumps, of which the following isa The object of my ii'ivention is to provide for a water-tight joint for the pump-handle of a double-cylinder pump, such packing being1 readily adjusted or removed for renewal or repair. `v y My invention consists in cutting a slot in the top of a hollowsemicircular cover, which cover is adjusted by screws over the topof both cylinders'. Between the cylinders is placed a xed journal, in which theraxle of the double lever, operating the two pistons, is placed. To'the top of this double lever isl cast a circular socket, into'which the lower end ofthe pum p-handle is placed, after first bein gl introduced into the circular cover, through the forementoned slot 'in the top of the saine.
In order to prevent the water from being forced out through this slot a jointis formed segment is cut a hole, through which theA pump-handle passes, after being provided with water from entering the said hole.
ofthe indiarubber packingin the bottom ot the segment, presses the said segment up and forms thus a reliable self-,packing watertight joint for the pump-handle, in its movements back and forth in the slot of the cover.
