IMPROVEMENT IN BACK-STRAP BUCKLES AND TRACE-CARRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,806, dated January 25, 1876; application filed July 3, 1874. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. WEED, of Glarinda, in the county of Page and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Strap-Fastener, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top "view of my improved fastener for back and hip straps of harness, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse, and Fig. 3a vertical longitudinal, section of the same, respectively, on the line 0 c, Fig. 1, and w m, Fig. 2.

The object of my invention is to pr pvide a simple and convenient fastening device for the back and hip straps of harness, by which the cutting and stitching of the same is obviated, and a stronger and more durable con-- nection of the straps obtained, while it furnishes also a hook support for the traces when the animals are detached from the vehicle.
My invention consists of an oblong device with loops at all sides, and a central vertical pin or tongue for the fastening of the crossingstraps. The side loops of the hip-straps are furthermore provided with T-shaped hooks or carriers for the traces. In the drawing, A represents the strap-fastener, made of oblong shape with rounded off edges, and of the usual material and finish. A leather shield or cushion, B, is riveted to the under side of the fastener, for protecting the back of the animal against the rubbing action of the fastener.
Lateral bridge bars or loops 0 serve for the passage of the back-strap, while longitudinal hip straps, together with the frequent repairs caused by the breaking and wearing out of the stitched parts, are, by this mode of fastening, entirely obviated.
The side loops D are furthermore provided with T-shaped upward -extending hooks or carriers D, for placing the traces thereon and holding them up when the horse is detached from the vehicle.
Thus a very simple and convenient device is furnished for fastening the traces entirely out of the way, so that they are not injured by being dragged on the ground, andv also quickly taken 011' for being applied to the vehicle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat'- ent- The back and hip strap fastening and tracesupporting device herein described, consisting of the base plate or frame A, lateral bridge bars or loops 0, side loops D, pin or fixed tongue E, and T-shaped hooks or trace-carriers D, as herein shown and described.
