HEEL-GROOVING MACHINE.

This invention relates to a machine for forming a groove in the rear side of the core of a covered heel, so as to produce a recess in the core that is used to receive a scam in the material that covers the core, thereby preventing said seam from forming a ridge on the finished heel that destroys its symmetry.
The main object of my present invention is to provide a machine of the character referred to, which is of such design that low priced labor can be used to operate the machine to produce a straight, vertically-disposed groove in the rear side of a heel or heel core, preparatory to the operation of covering the core.
Another object is to provide a machine of the kind mentioned, that can be used to groove heels or heel cores whose rear sides are of various contours.
And still another object is to provide a heel grooving machine of simple design, that can be adjusted easily to adapt it to heels or heel cores of different sizes.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view' of my improved heel grooving machine.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of said machine.
Figure 3 is a rear elevational view of a heel core that has been grooved in the machine; and
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view, taken on the line H of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A designates the bed plate of the machine which is disposed horizontally, B designates a bearing on said bed plate in which ahorizontally-disposed shaft G is rotatably mounted, G designates a pulley on said shaft that is adapted to eo operate with a driving belt D, and E designates a cutter attached to the free end of the shaft G. As previously stated, my improved machine is intended to be used to form a vertically-disposed groovel at the center of the rear side of aheel core at, preparatory to the operationof applying leather or other suitable material to said core to'form a coveringfor the same. The covering of the heel is composed of two pieces of material connected together by a seam, and the vertically-disposed groove 1 in the core serves as a recess in which said seam lies, thereby preventing the seam in the covering material from forming a ridge on the rear side of the finished heel that destroys its symmetry or detracts from the appearance of the heel.
The machine is provided with a carrier or work support F on which the heel core to is sustained during the operation of grooving the same. Said carrier F, which I will hereinafter refer to as the heel carrier, is so constructed and arranged that it can be moved in a direction to cause the heel core thereon to engage the cutter E and then move relatively to said cutter in a direction to cause the cutter to form a straight, vertically-disposed groove 1 at the center of the rear side of the heel core. In the machine herein shown the carrier is so constructed that it is capable of a combined reciprocating and rocking motion, and is formed preferably from a flat bar arranged edgewise in a bifurcated guideway G on the base plate A of the frame of the machine. The carrier F is disposed atright angles to the cutter shaft C, and the bifur cated guideway G is provided with a horizontally-disposed pivot 2 that extends transversely through the carrier in an elongated slot 3 in said carrier. 1 Said pivot 2 is so arranged With relation to the cutter E that when .the machine is idle, or at rest, the front end of the carrier F will be sustained'by the base plate A and held in a position directly underneath the cutter and in alignment with the same.
In using the machinethe operator mounts a heel core on the front end of the carrier F, and then swings the front end of said carrier upwardly so as to cause the heel core a: there on to engage the cutter E and then travel upwardly and rearwardly relatively to said cutter, thereby causing the cutter to form a straight, vertically-disposed groove 1 on the rear side of the core extending from the top lift end of the core tothe seat face at the opposite end of the core which is adapted to contact with the sole of the shoe on which the heel is used. It will be noted that in the grooving operation thecarrier F has a combined rocking and, reciprocating vmovement.
Also that the path of travel and degree of great variation in the shape of covered heels- The heel carrier F can be provided with any suitable means for determining or defining the position on the carrier of the heel core that is to be grooved. In the machine herein shown the carrier F is provided with two stops at and 5 so disposed that when the operator places a heel core a: on the front end of the carrier in an inverted position, the stop at will act as an abutment for the breast edge of the shoe seat portion of the core and the stop 5 will act as an abutment for one of the side edges of the shoe seat portion of the core. It is obvious, however, that various other means might be used to properly locate the core on the carrier and center it with relation to the cutter Without departing from the spirit or my invention. In order that the machine may be adjusted'quickly and easily, to adapt it to heels or heel cores of various sizes, the side stop 5 is adjustably mounted on the carrier F in such a way that it can be moved longitudinally 01": the axis of the cutter E, so as to bring said stop nearer to or farther away from the cutter, and thus insure the cutter forming a groove at the exact center of the rear side of the heel core. The side stop 5 is herein'illustrated as being retained in position by clampingscrews 6, and an adjusting screw 7 is provided for assisting the operator to accurately set the stop 5 in the proper position, said adjusting screw being rotatably mounted in 2. lug 8 on the carrier and having its inner end connected to a lug 9 on the stop 5 in such a way that when said screw is turned in one direction, the stop 5 will be moved towards the cutter E, and when said screw is turned in the opposite direction, said stop will be moved away from said cutter. If desired, the other stop 4 may bemounted on the carrier F in such a way that it can be adjusted towards and away from the cutter E, said stop 4: being herein illustrated as being retained in position by a clamping screw 10 that passes through an elongated slot 11 in the stop 4: which is disposed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the cutter shaft.
A machine of the construction above described can be successfully operated with unskilled labor, due-to the fact that it is of such design that the operator simply has to position the heel core on the front end of the carrier F and then swing the carrier upwardly, whereupon the cutter E will form a straight, vertically-disposed groove in the rear side of the heel core at the exact center of same. Due
to the fact that the carrier is mounted in such a way that it is capable of combined reciprocating and rocking motion, the rear side of the heel core will travel over the cutter properly, irrespective of the shape or contour of the core. The only time that the adjustment of the machine has to be changed is when a heel core of a dilterent size is to be operated on, and this can be effected quickly and easily simply by turning the adjusting screw 7 so as to change the position of the stop 5 which centers the heel core with relation to the cutter E.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A heel coregrooving machine, comprising a cutter and a carrier, one of said elements being adapted to, be moved relatively to the other in a direction to cause the cutter to form a straight groove at the center of the rear side of the heel core on the carrier.
2. A heel core grooving machine, comprising a rotatable cutter, and means for presenting a heel core to said cutter and moving said core relatively to the cutter in a direction to cause the cutter to form a straight vertically-disposed groove at the center of the rear side of the heel core.
3. A heel core grooving machine, comprising a rotatable cutter, and a heel carrier adapted to be manipulated to cause a heel core on said carrier to engage said cutter and then to be moved relatively to the cutter in a direction to form a vertically-disposed groove at the center of the rear side of the core extending from the top to the bottom oi the same.
4. A heel core grooving machine, comprising a rotatable cutter, and a heelcarrier mounted so as to be capable of a combined reciprocating and rocking motion, said carrier being adapted to be manipulated to cause the cutter to engage the rear side of the heel core on the carrier and form a vertically-disposed groove in said core.
5. A heel core grooving machine, comprising a rotatable cutter, and a heel carrier mounted so as to be capable of being reciprocated in a direction at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the cutter and also rocked towards and away fromthe cutter, whereby a heel core on the carrier may be moved in a path to cause the cutter to form a straight groove at. the rear side of the core at the center of the same.
6. A heel grooving machine, comprising a rotatable cutter, a heel carrier provided with an elongated slot, a guideway in which said carrier is reciprocatingly mounted, and a pivot on said guideway positioned in the elongated'slot in said carrier.
7 A heel core grooving machine, comprising a cutter and a heel carrier combined so that one of said elements can be moved relatively to the other in a direction to cause the cutter to form a straight vertically-disposed groove at the center of the rear side of a heel core on the carrier, and an adjustable means for determining the position of the heel core on the carrier.
8. A heel core grooving machine, comprising a cutter and a heel carrier combined so that one of said elements can be moved relatively to the other in a direction to cause the cutter to form a straight vertically-disposed groove at the center of the rear side of a heel core on the carrier, and a laterally-adjustable stop on said carrier adapted to serve as an abutment for one side edge of the heel core.
9. A heel grooving machine, comprising a frame provided With a base plate, a bearing on said base plate, a horizontally-disposed shaft rotatably mounted in said bearing, a cutter attached to the free end of said shaft, a heel carrier arranged at right angles to said shaft with one end of said carrier located in spaced relation and in alignment With the cutter, said carrier having an elongated slot, a bifurcated guideway on said base plate in Which said carrier is reciprocatingly mounted, and a pivot pin in said guideway that extends through the elongated slot in the carrier.
