UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. i
Application led September 29, 1926. Serial No. 138,404.)
- The invention relates to structural memhanger 7, in the form of a stirrup or U-shape,
bers made of steel and the like, for use in is connected to the upper chord as by the outbuildings as joi'sts, beams, girdei's or rafters. turned ends 8 which may be welded to the The object of the improvement is to prounder 'surface of the top chord upon each vide a trussed member which may be formed side of the rib 3 thereof. 55 of ordinary standard steel bars or structural This hanger is preferably formed of a'bar shapes in `common use, comprising spaced having a diameter substantially equal to the chord members connected by alternately bent depth of the rib 3, thus permitting the end web bars, the lower chord being supported at portions 8 of the hanger and the rib 3 of the 1o each end by an integral hanger in the form of top chord to rest upon a beam or the like as eo a stirrup connected to the end portions of the indicated at 9, this extension of the top chord upper chord forming beam ends upon the 4with the outturned ends 8 of the hanger form- ]'oist. ing a beam end upon the joist.
An embodiment of the invention is illuS- This hanger may be welded to the lower trated in the accompanying drawings, formchord also, thus providing an attached 65 ing part hereof, in which hanger which supports the lower chord from Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the upper chord and also from the support one of the improved j oists showing the chord such as'the beam 9, upon which the beam ends members formed of T-bars; f of the improved joist rest.
Fig: 2, a perspective VeW 0f the Same, and A modification of the invention is shown 70 Fig. 3, a perspective view of a portion of a in Fig. 3 in which the upper chord is formed joist, the chord members of which are formed of the spaced round bars 1a and the lower of spaced round bars. chord of similar bars 2a of less length th an the Similar numerals refer to similar parts upperchord. The 'web la and hanger 7ZL may be the same as that shown in-Figs 1 and 2, 75
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2 of the the outturned ends 8a of the hanger being drawings, a joist is shown in which the top welded to the beam ends of the top chord chord 1 and bottom chord 2 are of cross sec- Abars 1a, a short bar or plu 10 being provided tional T-shape having their ribs 3 in vertical between the spaced chor bars and end por 3o alignment with, and disposed toward each tionsSa of the hanger and being welded to a0 other. I all of said parts to form a solid rigid beam The chord members 1 and 2 are parallel end upon the joist. with each other throughout their lengths, the A bar joist is thus produced formed of lower chord 2 terminating at its ends at rolled shapes cut to the desired lengths and points spaced from the ends of the top connected by the zig-zag web bar of proper 85 chord 1. e length, the hangers being welded to the end A bar 4 bent into zig-zag form is located portions of the structure, forming beam ends between the spaced chord members, having without the necessity of bending the lower its alternate bends connected to the ribs of chord member upward and attaching 1t to the 40 the chord members as indicated at 5, by weldupper chord. A 90 ing or the like, .forming a web element for the I claim: joist. V'1. In a structural member including upperV The ends of this web bar are extended upand lower chord bars and an intervening zig` ward vertically from the end portions of the 'zag web bar secured at its bends as by weldlower chord and attached t'o the rib of the -ing to the chord bars U-shaped hangers con- 95 lupper chord as indicated at 6, by welding the nected to the upper chord bar extending beinturned ends of the bar to the rib of the low and supporting the ends of the lower top chord. chord bar.
` For the purpose of sup orting the ends of f 2. In a structural member including upper the lower chord from t e upper chord, a land lower chord bars and an intervening 100 bar extending below and supporting the ends c of the lowerpchord bar.
4. In a structural member including upper and lower chord bars, the upper bar being T- shaped, and an intervening zig-zag web bar secured at its bends as by welding to the chord bars, U-shaped hangers connected to the up- Y per chord bar extending below and supporting the ends of the lower chordbar.
5. In a structural member including upper and lower chord bars and an intervening Zigzag web bar securedat its bends as by welding tothe chord bars, the ends of the web bar being bent up vertically from the lower chord and connected to the'upper chord, U-shapedl hangers connected to the upper chord bar extending below and supporting the ends of the lower chord bar.
6. In a structural member including spaced upper and lower chord bars, the upper chord bar being of greater length .than the lower, an intervening Zig-zag web bar securedy at its bends as by welding to the chord bars, U- shaped hangers having outturned ends connected to the outer end portions of the upper chord bar extending below and supporting the en'ds of the lower chord bar.
l 7. In a structural member including an upper T-shaped chord bar, a lower chord bar of less length than the upper bar and spaced therefrom, an intervening zig-zag web bar secured at its bends as by welding to the chord bars, U-shaped hangers extending below and supporting the ends of the lower chord bar and having outturned upper ends secured to the end portions of the upper chord bar and *forming beam ends upon the structural memper T-shapedchord bar, a lower chord bar of less length than the upper bar and spaced of the T-bar and forming beam ends upon the strutural member.
9. In a structural member including upper and lower chord bars and an intervening zigzag web bar extending throughout the length of the structural member and secured at its bends, as by welding, to the chord bars, and U-shaped hangers connected to the upper chord bar exten-ding below and supporting the ends of the lower chord bar.
