UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.

IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,783, dated January 25, 1876; application September 14, 1875. v
To all whom it may concern:
reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The natureof my'invention consists in the construction of the lower portion of the canbody, as also in the construction of the bottom, and the mode of securing it in position, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the annexed drawings, which make a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan View of the top of the can, and Fig. 2 a vertical cross-section.
Inthe figures, A represents a metal butter can or tub, which is provided with a cover, which has been patented to me.
The bodyof this can is provided, near its 'bot tom, with a head on its inside. This bea d a is made by creasing the metal from the outside. 0 represents a metal bottom, which has its edges turned downward, as seen. This bottom is made to fit snugly in the can, and so that'it will rest against the under side of the bead. It is soldered in this position.
d represents a wooden bottom, which is provided with a flange, c. This flange extends beyond the sides of the can,to protect' it from damage.
The bottom edge of the can rests upon this flange c, and the other portion of this bottom, extending upward, rests against the metal bottom 0. This wooden bottom is held in place'by means of nails or brads passed into it through the sides of the lower portion of the can.
By this arrangement and construction the can is provided with a substantial bottom, the wooden flange of which acts as a protection to the metal of the bottom of the can.
I am aware that a package in which the bot: tom and top overlap the edges of the cylinder, and the entire package inclosed within aframe, is not new; hence I do not claim such as my invention.
Having thus fully described nhy invention, what I-claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- The can-body A, provided near its bottom with an annular bead, a, in combination with the metal bottom G, with downward-projecting flange, and the wooden bottom d, with projecting part c, constructed as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingI have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of August, 1875.
A. O. SAWYER.
