The invention relates to cable-winding means designed primarily for pulling` mme cars into position to be loaded by a conventional mining and car-loading machine.
One aim of the invention is to provide a "hollow bumper for the mining and loading machine in which all partsof the cablewinding means are mounted, thereby protecting these parts against foreign matter and providing a structure which economizes greatly in space-an essentiall item on mining machines which `are ordinarily encumbered with as much mechanism as can be accommodated. f
Another aim is to provide a rsimple and Compact arrangement of parts which may be advantageously kand eiliciently used and will be long-lived under the rough usage to which necessarily subjected.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter, hereinafter described and claimed, description being accomplished by reference `to the accompanying drawings.

A combined mining and loading machine y M is shown embodying a truck T having a horizontally elongated bumper B. This bumper is of hollow form and has an opening O in its front through which a cable C passes. Winding means for this cable n are confined within the bumper B and hence said cable and means may be advantageously L4used to ldraw .cars into position to be loadedby the machine M. The conventional machine is, as part of its usual equipment,
rovided with a. bum i er at the `same location asbumperB. By using this hollow bumper Binstead of thefusual bumpenand confining the lcable-winding means within'said hollow bumper, we provide the machine 'with the additional car-pulling equipment and at the same time provide space yto accommodate such equipment withouty unnecessarily encumbering the already complex 'machine iny which practically allavailable space is utif lized at'the time of manufact-ure. `Aside from these advantages, -mou'nting of ther cableiwinding means within the bumperlocates `such means at the ymost advantageous position for use whether the ycarsto ybe pulled be in linewithfor laterally'of the'machine M, and such ymounting rprotects movable parts Ito a great extent against grit, dust, etc. which necessarily exist "in the zone around the machine. Therefore, the mount-L ing of the cable-winding means within the hollow bumper, is of paramountimportance. Also, the general relation'of parts enablingy them to be confined in the limited space within the bumper, is of moment. The preferred relation andgconstruction of parts will be specifically explained with the understandingfthat within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made.
The'rear wall of the bumper B is formed by a channel bar 10 whose upper and lowerr flanges 1.1-12 project forwardly. Secured to the lower flange 12 by rivets or ythe like, is a bottom plate 13 to whose free edges an angle metal "bary 14 is riveted or otherwise fastened. Secured at its lower edge to this flange is a front wall 1,5, end walls y16 being integral with this front wall andsecured to flange 14; and bar 10. Brackets 17 are secured lto the walls 'l5-16, and a top plate 18isfastened to these brackets. y Within the bumper B, in end to end relation, are a winch 19 and anelectric motor 20. The imotor shaft 21 is providedfat its outerfendfwith" a pinion'22 meshingwith a gear 23 on a shaft Qllwhich is mounted yin bearings, 25, said shaft being disposed at one side of the motor 20. Preferably, theA y is provided within said winch for connect-ing and disconnecting said shaft and winch at will. A spring-contracted brake band preferably surrounds a brake drum 31 on the winch merely to exert a drag thereon when pulling the cable C out for connection with a car.
The shaft 29 is rotatably mounted in two spaced bearings 32*33 lwhich are rsecured to the bumper bottom 13, and this shaft is shouldered at 34 to abut these bearings and prevent endwise shifting yof. saidy shaft. A central bore 35 is formed in the shaft 29 from its outer end to a kpoint near its inner end, and opposed slots.36 extend from the inner end of said boreto the periphery 'of the shaft. A rod 37 is slidable in the bore 35, a clutch sleeve 38 is splined on the shaft y29 at the innery end of the bearing 32, and
a pin or `key 39 passes'through said slots, sleeve and rod to connect the two latter. The sleeve 38 occupies one end portion of a bore 40 formed centrally in the winch 19,
and the remainder of this bore 40 is occupied 1 by a fixed clutch sleeve 41, the two sleeves being provided with co-acting clutch teeth 42.v Sleeve l41 is secured in the bore 40 and acts as a bushing rotatably surrounding the shaft 29 to form a bearing for the winch.
Swiveled upon the outer end of rod-37, is a collar 45,to whichan angular lever 46 is pivoted. This lever is fulcrumed at 47 to the bearing 33 and extends to the exterior of the bumper B. By preference, flange 11 is depressed at 48 to provide a space underv the bumper top 18, through which the lever 46 passes.
, By properly shifting the lever 4G, sleeve 38 is separated from sleeve 41, permitting the cable C` to be unwound from the winch 19 and connected with a car. Then, when the motor 20fis operatedto drive the shaft 29, and lever 46 is vmoved to inter-engage the clutch teeth 42, the winch will be forcibly rotated to wind the cable and pull the car to loading position. - F rom the foregoing, it will be seen that uniqueprovision has been made for attaining the desired ends. Attention is again invited to the fact that variations may be made, and moreover, it will be understood that the invention is not necessarilyl restricted to use with mining machinery.
