U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE THOMAS MODONOUGH, OF OTTAWA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF TW-O-THIRDS HIs RIGHT T0 JOSEPH E. PORTER AND THOMAS E. MODONOUGH, ()F
SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. M72,55@, dated January 25, 1876; application filed September 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, THOMAS MODONOUGH, of Ottawa, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Pole and Shaft Coupling, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to means for attaching and detaching poles and shafts to and from carriages; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter described, by which such action may be readily and easily performed.
Figure l of the drawings represents a side View of my coupling, and Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof.
The letterA represents that arm of my coupling, which is attached to the axletree. It-s front is enlarged and slotted, as shown, to provide for the insertion of the rubber block F to hold the parts in security, and guard against that nuisance called rattling. D represents a circular eye formed in the front end of the draw-bar A, and is adapted to receive and hold the rear cam-shaped end of the arm B, as shown at C and Fig. .l.
To provide for coupling the two arms together, I form a recess or slot in the head of arm A, extending to the side of said head at the point E. The coupling is formed bypassing the hook G on D sidewise through the slot E on A, until it is within the recess land clasps the eye D. The rubber block F then presses against said hook, and holds it in position.
Detachment is efi'ected by turning the drawbar B downward and at the same time pressin g the rubber backward.
I claim as my in vention- The arm A, recessed or slotted at E, and arm B, provided with the cam-shaped end 0, whereby a coupling is formed by passing the hook O sidewise over the eye D, substantially as shown and described. I
THOMAS MODONOUGH.
