This invention relates to a unit for hold- 5 of Henry C. Miller for visible record systom, filed December 10, 1925, SerialNo. 74,523; and unit for holding the leaves in a visible record system, filed March 29, 1926, Serial No. 98,399; and it has in general the same objects set forth in such applications.
I Further objects are to provide a unit for holdingthe leaves in a visible record system in which a pair of parallel bars are provided with curved impaling prongs which are adapted to contact and to form continuous rings for the reception of perforated sheets. I
Further objects are to provide a unit for a visible record system in which the leaf rests or parallel barsa-re so mounted that they may be separated and may be shifted longitudinally to individually or collectively shift the sheets, and to permit the insertion or removal of sheets.
Further objects are to provide a device in which there is no relative folding of the parts, but in which the bars or leaf rests are separated by direct outward motionrin whichthe motions of separation andlongitudinal shifting are distinct and are independently performech I Further objects are to provide a single locking means for simultaneous locking against both, separation and longitudinal shifting and to provide a locking means with cam surfaces to draw the ends of the prongs tightly against each other, and to provide compositebars or leaf rests which consist of a main body portion guided for parallel outward motion and for longitudimal shifting motion, and plates mounted above the body portion of the bars and cooperating with the locking means so that the plates bear against the base of the prongs and force the prongs towards each other into intimate binding relation.

Thegouter ends of the leaf rests are guidedby means of inwardly turned flanges 11 and 12 formed integral with the base plate, as shown most clearly in Figures 1, 2, 3, and 6. One of the flanges, 12, for instance, is provided with notches 13 adapted to receive the studs 14; and 15 carried by the leaf rests. The stud 15 is adapted to enter either the notch 13 or to pass on the outer side of the finger 14, as shown in Figure 3.
Itis. to be noted that the bars 7 carry plates 16 and 17. The plate 17 s is rigidly secured to the corresponding bar 7, whereas the plate 16' is slidably guided upon the bar 7 by. means of pins'18 rigid with the bar 7 and cooperating with slots 19 formed in the plate 16. The plates 16 and 17 carry prongs 20 and 21 as shownin Figures 1 to 3 and 5, the prongs being removed in Figure 4 for the sake of clearness. i v
Further, it is to be noted from Figures 1, 2, 3, and 5, that auxiliary plates'22 are positioned above theplates 16 and 17 and are provided with apertures'through which the prongs 20 and 21 pass, as may be seen from Figure 5. i

as indicated by the reference character 22, Figure 2. l
From the mechanism thusfar described, it is apparent' that the'leaf rests or parallel bars may be pulled apart from'the position shown in Figure 1 by grasping. the studs or manipulating pins 14 and 15. The parts may be drawn directly apart, as stated, and if it is desired to shift, certain of the sheets the pin 15 may be pushed longitudinally to thus slide the prongs 20 into the position shown in Figure 2. Thereafter, theparts are moved towards. each other to the position shown in Figure 3 withthe pin 15 on the other side ofthe finger 14 of the flange 12. When the parts are in this position, it is apparentthat rockingof the sheets 24 over from one setfof prongs to the other! will cause the prongs to be positioned in other of the apertures 23 of the sheets (see Figure 1) from those previously, occupied, it being noted that the apertures 23 are arranged at the positions of the prongsand also inter mediate such positions. p 7
After the sheetshave' been rocked as desired,,the parts are separated into the position shown in Figure 2, and the prongs 20 are shifted downwardly into their original position-and thereafter .the two portions are slid towards each other to again'assume the position shown in Figure 1..: I
Means are provided forj simultaneously locking the parts in closed position against both direct separation and longitudinal shifting. This means may comprise a locking strip 25 'which'is provided with a manipulating thumb piece 26 and is provided with slots 27 which are guided by pins 28 passing upwardly from" the base plate 1, and
, inner portions also by an extension of the central pivot 4 as shown most clearly in Figure 6. This look- .ing bar is provided with raised portions 29 and also with cutout portions providing cam faces 30 adjacent these raised portions. These cam faces define notches, and it is to be noted, particularly from reference to Figure 2, that the cam faces are divergent at their outer portions and parallel at their These cam faces engage upwardly turned lips 31 formed integrally with the plates 22, as shown most clearly in Figure 5. As shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3, a pair of these upwardly turned lips 31 are provided adjacent each end of the device and a corresponding locking notch with cam faces 30 vis also provided at these points. Thus, the sliding of the lo'cking'bar 25 upwardly in the positions shown in Figures 1 and 6, causessimult'aneous engagement of the two pairs of ears 31 and consequently rigidly locks the parts against both lateral separation and longitudinal motion, it being noted thatthe pin 15 is positioned within the notch 13 and consequently when the parts are locked in this position no longitudinalshifting can occur.
7. It is to be noted further that the parallel motion mechanism causes an easy separation It is to be noted further particularly from:
Figure 5 that when the cam faces 30 engage the lips31 that they tend to slide the plates 22 inwardly towardseach other and, coin 58011611131 force the alates a ainst the bases of the prongs 20 and 21 and aid in tightly binding the ends of the prongs against each other.
It is to be noted from Figure 5 that one of the prongs of each pair is provided with a pin 32 which fits within an aperture 33 formed in the other prong. If desired, the apertures and pins may alternate, as shown in'Figures 2 and '3, for successive pairs of prongs. 1
Further, as shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3,
it is preferable to provide the prongs with slanting outer faces which contact, as shown in Figure 1, when the device is closed.
It is also to be noted that this unit may be fastened upon a table, if desired. or else may be provided with hinge members 34. (see Figures 1, 3, and 5) which are adapted to hingedly receive covers 35.
' It is to be noted particularly from Figor handle 26. These upturned lugs cooperate with the head of the pin 28 and may be positioned on either side of such head by depressing the thumb piece end of the bar and sliding the bar longitudinally; that is to say transversely of the entire device. The locking bar is held pressed upwardly towards the head of the rivet by means of a spring 37 which bears against a washer 38 (see Figure 4) located beneath the bar and surrounding the rivet 28.
It is thus apparent that the bar is locked against inadvertent motion by this simple mechanism.
It will be seen that a novel form of unit for a visible record system has been provided by this invention in which the composite prong-carrying leaf rests may be simultaneously locked against separation and longitudinal motion by a single manipulation of the locking member.
Further, it is to be noted that this locking member locks the leaf rests at widely separated points and thus provides a very secure lock.
It is to be noted further that the cooperating or interlocking outer ends of the prongs .iaintain correct alignment Oi the free ends of the prongs When the device is closed, and prevents inadvertent distortion or separation of these ends. Thus, as the pron 's are held both at their outer and inner enc s, it is apparent that a. very rigid and secure device is provided.
Although the invention has been clescribed in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting, as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
I claim:
1. A unit for a record system comprising a base plate, a pair of parallel bars upon said base plate, impaling prongs carried by said bars, parallel motion mechanism connecting said bars and base plate, whereby said bars may be separated by a direct lateral movement, one of said bars being adapted for also being longitudinally shifted. and a single locking means for simultaneously locking said bars against relative motion, saidlocking means locking each of said bars at Widely separated points.
2. A unit for a record system comprismg a base plate, a bar adjacent each side oi said base plate, curved impaling prongs carried by said bars and having contacting ends and forming continuous rings from one bar to the other bar, means guiding said bars upon the base plate for lateral separation, one of said bars being adapted also for longitudinal shifting motion relative to the other bar, and means for simultaneously locking said bars against separation and longitudinal shifting, said lockbase plate, curved impaling prongs carried by said bars andhaving contacting-ends and forming. continuous rings from one bar to the other bar, 'meansguiding said bars upon the base iplate 'for lateral separation,
one of said bars being adaptedalso tor longitudinal shifting imo'tion relative to the other bar, and means for simultaneously locking said bars against separation :and longitudinal shifting, said locking means ineluding a part movable longitudinally over said base plate and engaging :said :bars at Widely spaced points.

5. A unit for a record system comprising a base plate, a pair of parallel bars upon said base plate, impaling prongs carried by said bars, parallel motion mechanism connecting said bars and base plate, whereby said bars may be separated by a direct lateral movement, one of said bars being adapted for also being longitudinally shift- 1 ed, and a single locking means for simultaneously locking said bars against relative motion, said locking means locking each of said bars at widely separated points, said locking means being cammed to tightly force the ends of the prongs into contact with each other.
6. A unit for a record system comprising a base plate, a pair of bars upon said base plate and each bar having a series of prongs contacting at their ends with the prongs of the other pair and forming rings, means for guiding said bars upon said base, whereby said bars may be laterally separated, means for longitudinally guiding one of said bars, .7
whereby such bar may be longitudinally shifted with respect to the other bar, means for locking said bars against longitudinal and lateral motion, said prongs of each ring having interlocking means at their ends to prevent relative motion of such ends when the ends are in contact.
7. A unit for a record system comprising a base plate, a pair of bars upon said base plate and each bar having a series of prongs contacting at their ends with the prongs of the other pair and forming rings, means'for guiding said bars upon said base, whereby said bars may be laterally separated, means for longitudinally guiding one of said bars,
whereby such bar may be longitudinally shifted with respect to the other bar, means for locking said bars against longitudinal and lateral motion, one prong of each ring I having a pin projecting from its end and the other prong of the ring having a hole in its end'for the reception of said pin.
8. A unit for a record system comprising a base plate, a pair of parallel bars upon said base plate, impaling prongs carried by said bars, parallel motion mechanism connecting said bars and base plate, whereby said bars may be separated by a direct lateral movement, one of said bars being adapted for also being longitudinally shift-- ed, a single locking means for simultaneously locking said bars against relative motion, and a second locking means for locking said first-mentioned locking means against motion.
