' This invention relates primarily to a valve snap action especially adapted for fluid pressure or suction operated motors, the same being an improvement on the invention disclosed in my co-pending application filed 'June 15, 1926, Serial No. 116,146.
In this co-pending application is disclosed an oscillatory valve ,pivoted on a motor driven shaft and actuated by a kicker having a play connection therewith, said kickers having its valve actuating movement quickened or boosted by an accelerator, and said valve having its movement limited by a cooperating stop member.
In the present invention special attentlon has been directed to certain features which will facilitate the manufacture and productionof the several parts of the valve action and which will expedite their assembly in the action. With this thought in mind, theobjects of this invention comprise an improved stop member and its relation to the kicker accelerator; an improved kicker construction; and a simpler arrangement and assembly of the valve, its stop member and the kicker, aswell as animproved coopera tive relation. between these parts and the kicker accelerator.

Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, the motor depicted comprises a casing 1 of substantially semi-cir- 'cular shape and having a closure or cover plate 2, said closure plate and easing having complement-a1 bearings 3 in which is jouri naled a shaft having the vaneor piston 5' in" the side of the casing co-axially with the shaft 4, and extends upwardly into the cover plate 2. In the form of the motor, shown the valve seat 7 is provided in the cover plate 2 in its portion of the valve chamber, said seat being provided with piston chamber ports 8 communicating with the piston chamber on opposite sides of the piston and an interposed suction or ressure supply port 9 leading to a nipple that may be conveniently connected to a source of suction or pressure by any suitable hose or pipe connection. The shaft bearing 3 in the cover plate 2 extends through the valve seat, which latter is provided with a depending portion 11 divided by a slot 12 to facilitate the mounting of the cover plate over the shaft. The depending portion 11 consequently overlaps a portion of the casing 1 and provides an even support for the valve in its oscillatory movement across the ports 8 and 9. In the present showing the shaft 4 extends into and terminates within the valve chamber, the latter being closed by a cover 13 which is engaged in an annular seat formed in the surrounding wall thereof.
The valve 14 is provided with an opening whereby it may be hung on the shaft, and its seat engaging face is provided with a port-connecting groove or passage 15 of sufficient length to connect one of the piston chamber ports 8 to the suction port 9, the extent of valve movement being such that the suction portis connected to each piston.

Radially outwardly beyond the groove 15 the valve is provided with an outturned lug 16 which extends between spaced stop shoulders 17 of a stop member 18 and also between spaced actuating shoulders 19 of a kicker 20, the stop member and kicker being likewise pivotally mounted on the-shaft 4, with the space intervening the shoulders 19 being less than the space intervening the shoulders 17. Slidably mounted in a radially disposed pocket 21, i i the surrounding wall of the valve chamber, is an accelerator 22 which is yieldingly projected into the valve chamber by a backing spring 23 preferably ar rangedin the bottom of the pocket.
The accelerator is steadied in its sliding movement beyond the pocket by guideway 24, and is receivedwithin a slot 25 formed in the adjacent portionof the stop member 18. This relationship between the accelerator and the stop member not only further tends to guide and steady the accelerator in its outward projection, but the accelerator serves to hold the stop member against rotation on the shaft so that the stop shoulders 17 will define the extent or limit of movement of the valve by arresting the lug 16. The kicker is provided with spaced and preferably convergent cam surfaces or edges 26 which extend to be engaged alternately or successively by the accelerator 22, the action being such that the forward cam edge, relative to the direction of rotation of the kicker, depresses the accelerator into its pocket which latter, in rising after the accelerator rides over onto the succeeding or following cam edge, exerts a camming effect on said following 0 edge and thereby boosts or accelerates t e kicker movement for shifting the valve from one to the other of its two operative positions. A coiled spring 27 is interposed on the shaft 4:. between the valve 14 and the stop member 18 for urging the .valve to its seat and also for urging a pin retainer 28 outwardly-over an actuator or pin 29 to prevent displacement of the pin, the latter being inserted in a transverse opening 30 provided in the outer end of the shaft 4, and the pin retainer consisting of a disk loosel threaded over the shaft and having a perip eral flange,31 overhanging the outer ends of the pin 29. This pin serves as an actuator for the kicker, its opposite ends being designed to alternately engage an outturned lug .32,on the kicker-the pin retainer plate 28 being'cut away to permit the lug 32 to project into the ath of movement ofthe actuhtor pin. -In ormin the lug 32 it is preferably bent out from between the shoulders 19, or in other words the forming of the lug 32-results also in the formation of the shoulder 19.
In the opzrationof the valve snap act-ion just descri d, the oscillatory movement of the shaft will alternately bring the opposite ends of the actuator pin against the lug 32 after an initial and predetermined idling movement of the shaft. In practice the pin 29 engages the lug 32 as the piston approachs or nears its limit of movement in that directi'on. On continued movement'of the piston, after the pin' engages the lug 32, the kicker will be carried along with the pin, the
kicker movement initially depressing the accelerator 22, and as the accelerator rides over onto the trailing cam surface 26, said accelerator will give the kicker an. added impetus or boost, such aceeleration'being permitted by reason of the fact that the lug 32 is free to move faster than pin 29. Supposing the iston to be moving in a counter clockwise dlrection in Fig. 6, the pin 29 will idle along 'until it contacts with lug 32 and forethe valve is moved, 'or substantially so,-
the accelerator will have begun its accelerating effect on the trailing cam edge so that the valve actuating movement of the kicker will be faster than the accelerator-depressing movement of the'kicker. After the kicker has actuated the valve, the accelerator rises to hold the kicker against the valve lug 16 or securely clamp the valve lug against the adjacent stop shoulder 17 of the stop member, as shown in Figures 1 and 6.

A valve snap action comprising a shaft, a resiliently mounted accelerator movable substantially radially thereof, a valve seat, a valve movable'thereon, a stop member cooperating with the valve to limit its movement, said stop member hung on the shaft and having a slot receivingthe accelerator when the latter moves inwardly toward the shaft, and a driven kicker pivoted adjacent the stop member and having a play connection with the valve for shifting the same back and forth, said kicker having spaced cam surfaces acting successively to move the accelerator radially outward from the shaft against the tension of its resilient mounting and to permit the accelerator to return inwardly to its normal position, said accelerator during its return acting upon the engaged cam surface to accelerate the movement of the kicker.

A valve snap action for motors comprising a shaft, a resiliently mounted accelerator movable substantially radially thereof, a valve seat, a valve movable thereon, a stop member hung on the shaft and slidable connected to the accelerator, the latter serving to hold the stop member against movement, and a power driven kicker pivoted adjacent the stop member and having a part-acted upon by the accelerator for boosting the movement of the kicker, the latter being driven by and during movement of a part of the motor, said stop member having spaced shoulders for being engaged by a part of the valve to limit the movement of said valve and said kicker having spaced shoulders for acting alternately upon said valve to operate the same.

A valve snap action comprising a valve chamber, a motor operated shaft extending thereinto, a valve pivoted on the shaft within the chamber, a kicker pivoted on the shaft and having a play connection at one side of the shaft with the valve for rocking the same back and forth, a resiliently yieldable accelerator projecting into the path of the kicker, said kicker having spaced cam surfaces at the opposite side of the shaft alternately engageable by the accelerator for receiving a boosting force therefrom, means for limiting the movement of the valve, and
means operable by the shaft for rocking the kicker.

A valve snap action comprising a valve chamber, a motor operated shaft extending thereinto, a valve movable therein for limited movement, a kicker pivoted on the shaft and having a play connection with the valve for movingthe same back and forth, a spring I pressed accelerator in the chamber, said kicker having cam surfaces alternately engageabl'e by the accelerator for receiving a boosting force therefrom, a stop member hung on the shaft and guidingly engaging a part of the accelerator and alongiwhich the accelerator moves in its kicker-boosting movement, said stop member having a pair of spaced stop shoulders and said valve having a lug extending between said stop shoulders for engaging the'same to define the extent of movement of the valve, and an operative connection between the shaft and thekicker. 10. A valve snap action comprising a valve 4 seat, a valve movable thereon and having a stop-engaging part, spaced stop shoulders between which said stop engaging part said valve stop-enga ng part and moving I 1 the same against sal stop shoulders, means for operating the kicker by and during movement of a moving part of a motor to which the snap action is applied, and resilient means acting to acceleratethe movement of the kicker after such movement has been initiated by saidkicker operating means, said accelerating meansv yieldably clam ing said valve stop-engaging part between the active stop shoulder-and a kicker shoulder.
