FOOT FOR FILING CABINETS Filed NOV. 16, 1927 Elwwehboz BERNARD, L. POLKOSNIK li atented Aug. 2?, i929.
BERNARD L. POLKOSNIK, OF GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT.
FGOT FOR FILING- CABINETS.
Application filed November 16, 1927. Serial No. 233,658.
This invention relates to card index cabinets of the sectional interlocking unit type, I
and the general object of the invention is to admit of the cabinet being held in spaced relation above a supporting surface, such as a desk or table, in order to prevent the cabinet from disfiguring or marring the sup porting surface.
To this end the invention resides in the provision of a foot having a novel form of fastening means for securing the foot to the cabinet and also permitting the expeditious detachment of the foot from the cabinet when desired.
Other objects will appear and be better understood as the specification proceeds, reference being made to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof and in which:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a flle cabinet showing the foot in attached position.
Figure 2, is a perspective view showing the construction of the foot.
Figure 3, is a perspective view showing a modified form of foot.
Referring to the drawings in detail the letter A designates a file cabinet composed of interlocking units B each unit having channels C along the longitudinal edges thereof for the reception of loci-ring keys D which connect adjacent units together.
A plurality of supports 5 are located below each of the outer lowermost units for elevating the cabinet above a floor, table or desk, and each support consists, as shown more particularly in Figure 2 of the drawing, a foot 6 formed preferably of rubber and an elongated plate 7 formed of metal and connected to the foot by a fastening element 8. One end of the plate is directed upwardly as at 9 and then extended horizontally to provide a flat engaging surface 10 having the terminal deflected downwardly. The opposite end of the plate is formed to provide the inwardly extending spaced horizontal flanges l1 and an intermediate vertical flange 12.
In attaching the support to the unit, the flanges 1.1 are aligned with the lower-outermost channel C and the support moved inwardlv of the unit resulting in the flanges 11 entering the channel C, the surface 10 engaging the underside of the unit and the flange 12 engaging the outside of the unit as shown in Figure 1.
When the support 5 is in operative position the major portion of the plate 7 is in spaced relation to the lower side of the unit. This reduces the frictional engagement between the plate and the unit and permits of the expeditious removal of the support from the unit and also facilitates the placement of the support on the unit. The plate is preferably formed of a metal which possesses a certain degree of resiliency so that the plate will flex slightly under the weight of the unit and result in a more effective contact of the flanges l1 and 12 and the flat surface 10 with the unit.
If desired, instead of having the spaced flanges 11 and the intermediate vertical flange 12 on the outer end of the plate, a single horizontal flange 13 may be employed as shown in the modification in Figure 3. In this construction the outer end of the plate is bent upwardly and downwardly to form the vertical flange 14 and then terminally extended horizontally to provide the flan e 13, which is adapted to be'received by the channel C when the support is in operativeposition on the unit 13.
It is to be understood that the forms of this invention herein shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same, and that various changes in shape and size of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope, of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A support for a channelled cabinet including a foot, a plate secured to the foot and having one end bent upwardly and outwardly and adapted to engage the under surface of the cabinet, and having the opposite end thereof formed to provide a pair of spaced horizontal flanges for engaging in a channel in the cabinet and a vertical flange for engaging the outer side of the cabinet.
2. A support for a channelled cabinet including a foot, a plate secured to the foot and having one end bent upwardly and outwardly and adapted to engage the under surface of the cabinet and having the opposite end formed to provide a horizontal flange for engaging in a channel in the cabinet and a vertical flange for engaging the the terminal of said end being deflected 1 outer side of the cabinet. downwardly to lie in spaced relation with the 3. A support for a channelled cabinet incabinet, the opposite end of the plate being eluding a foot, a plate secured to the foot formed to provide a horizontal flange for 5 and adapted to underlie the cabinet and engaging in a channel in the cabinet and to have the major portion thereof spaced a vertical flange for engaging the outer side 15 from the cabinet, said plate having one end of the cabinet. bent upwardly and outwardly and adapted to engage the under surface of the cabinet, BERNARD L. POLKOSNIK.
