TEARING-STRIP CAN.

This invention relates to tearing strip cans and has for its object the provision of an hermetically sealed can which when opened by removal of the tearing strip provides a friction cover adapted to seat easily and tightly within the can body.
This invention presents certain improvements in the construction shown in my Patent 1,586,277, granted May 25, 1926, in which the can body is bent or looped to form an internally extending curl located below the tearing strip for the reception of a friction plug cover that is formed separate from the can and double-seamed thereto. The tearing strip is located between the cover seam and the internally extending curl and after the tearing strip is removed the cover will provide a friction closure or what is known in the can making art as a reclosure, a portion of the cover being formed to frictionally engage within the inwardly extending curl of the can body.
An important object of my present invention resides in providing a separate member that will replace the inwardly extending curl 2 formed in the can body in my above mentioned application, that will have many of the advantages of the earlier construction and other new and highly desirable features, and such a member that may be formed of any convenient material and readily applied.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a can of the tearing strip type with an internal wall member that will provide a seat for the cover after the tearing strip is removed that may be formed economically and that in its production will not require diflicult bending or forming operations.
Another important object of the invention is to provide such a device wherein the part or portion forming the inwardly extending curl materially reinforces the can body, both I before and after the removal of the cover.
Another important object is to provide a can of the above mentioned type in which the inwardly extending curl or friction cover seat is formed by a separate member that is held in position by the can body and that may be formed of material or materials different from that of the can body upon occasion.
Another important object is to provide a tearing strip can having a cover secured thereto that is formed to provide a friction closure for the can after the removal of the tearing strip and a separate member for forming a 5 seal between the cover and the can after the removal of the tearing strip or a split memher that may be either supported or secured within the can bod or carried by the cover that will fit snugly etween the cover and the container wall when the cover is applied and after the tearing strip has been removed to seal the container.
Numerous other objects and advanta es of the invention will be apparent as it is tter understood from the following description, which, taken inconnection with the accompanymg drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.

For the purpose of illustratin my invention I have shown on the drawings a sheet metal can body 11 of the usual circular form although it will be manifest that other shapes may be employed. Bottom and top closures respectively indicated at 12 and 13 are provided that are or may be of the usual double seamed character. The body is provided with a pair of encircling scorelmes 14 forming a tearing strip portion 15 which terminates in the usual tearing strip tongue 16 at the side seam 17 of the can.
For the purpose of providing a can with a seat for the use of the friction plug closure or rec-losure, the can body may be formed to provide a means for holding a separate member 19. This may be accom lished in any suitable manner, such as by orming an mwardly or an outwardly extending head or the like, or both,and in the present instance I have shown an outwardly extending bead that provides a. peripheral groove 18 thatvmay 105 be located at any suitable distance from the top of the can. The member 19 may of any suitable form and size and of any su table material. such as rubber, cork, wood, metal, or the like, the material being determined by 110 the character of goods to be packed in the used and under certain conditions when a metal or wooden member is used it is possible to use such a member of the s lit ring type or of the type shown on the drawings that is split as at 20. When the member 19 is formed of either of the above mentioned materials or any other suitable material it is formed to engage in the groove 18 or in a similar groove provided in the can body and to provide a seat for the cover or closure member and may also be made either solid or hollow according to requirements. In the present embodiment I have shownthis member of circular form and solid, and it will be apparent from the drawings that a wire or tube or combinations of both may be substituted for the solid member shown if desired.
The cover 13 is or may be formedfor attachment to the can body 11 by means of the usual double seam 22 or the like and from the usual shoulder or countersunk portion 23 of the cover the cover extends inwardly to a second shoulder 24 and thence downwardly and slightly inwardly to provide a slightl tapered or friction wall 25 inwardly of an concentric to the body wall of-the can. The location of the wall 25 is determined by the sizev of the member 19 and provides a plug of sufiicient diameter to tight y seat within the member 19 after the tearing strip 15 has been re moved and when the cover is assembled to provide a reclosure. The material of the cover within the wall 25 is formed to provide a horizontal ledge 26 and an inner vertical wall 27 that may be ,of any-desired height and is provided to increase the capaci of the can by raising the center portion o the cover An advantage of this construction resides in the fact that thefriction seat formed by the ring makes substantially a line contact with the friction wall 25.
The can is opened by engaging the usual i may be assembled as indicated (Fig. 4) to I protect the contents of the can after the strip has been removed. The upper score line is preferably arranged substantially at thelower edge of the seam 22 so that after the cover is removed there will be no burs, strips or the like projecting from the cover such as may cut the hands of an ultimate consumer,
and the lower score line 14 is preferably arranged so that after the strip is removed the member 19 will be held in assembled position Within the peripheral groove 18. It will be noted, however, that these score lines may be arranged in any suitable position or location as conditions require. It will also be noted that the member 19,especial1y when formed of a solid material such as metal, materially reinforces the upper end of the body wall both before and after the cover has been removed and that it provides a relatively stiff and rigid open end into which the cover may be frictionally engaged after the removal of the tearing strip.
I claim:
1. A can comprising, a body formed to provide a tearing strip and an annular recess adjacent said tearing strip, a cover permanently secured to the body and having a portion spaced inwardly of the body and extending beyond an edge of the tearing strip, and a solid annular member arranged in said seat and to provide an annular wall for engage- ,ment-with the cover after the tearing strip has been removed to provide a friction clossure' for .the can.
2. A. can comprising, a body formed to provide a tearing strip and an annular recess adjacent said tearing strip, a cover permanently secured to the bod and having a portion spaced inwardly of t e body and extending beyond an edge of the tearing strip, and
an annular member having a substantially circular external surface for cooperating with the cover and said annular recess to provide a friction seal for the can. t

A can comprising, a body formed to provide a tearing strip and an annular recess adjacent said tearing strip, a cover perma= nently secured to the body and having a portion spaced inwardly of the body and extendan annular'member having a substantially circular external surface for cooperating with the cover and said annular recess to provide a friction seal for the can, said member being permanently secured in the recess.

A can body comprising a body provided with encircling score lines settin off a tearing strip, said body being forme below said tearing strip with a peripheral groove, a split ring seated in said peripheral groove, and a cover seamed to said bodyand having an inwardly spaced inner friction wall adapted to resilently seat within said split ring, said split ringkhaving substantially equal horizontal and vertical dimensions.
7. A can comprising a body having score 26 lines setting off a circumferentially arranged tearingstrip near the top, said can body carrying a member separate from and secured to the interior of the can body and provided with an inwardl extending circumferential wall adjacent 881d tearing strip,'and a cover seamed to the upgler end of the body and hava downwar y extending friction wall in adapted to fit within said separate member and ofiset inwardly from thecan body wall above said separate member in amount equal" to the horizontal inward extension of said separate member carried b said body.
8. A can comprisinga y having score lines setting of! a. circumferentiall arranged tearing strip near the top, the b0 y wall adjacent said tearing strip being provided with a separate solid member having an inwardly projecting circumferential wall, and a cover' seamed to the upper end of the body and having a downwardly extending friction wall arranged inwardly'at a distance from the seam between the cover and body, a distance equal to the inward extension of the wall portion of the separate body, said friction wall being adapted to engage the inwardly extending wall portion of the separate body after the tearing strip is removed to form a tight and readily removable closure for said can.
