The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a needle head for sewing machines, and more particularly to a needle head for supporting a plurality of needles. An object of the invention is to provide means whereby a pair of needlesniay be clamped to the needle head by a single set screw, and the needles arranged with the r points in a line cutting the transverse axis of the needle head at an acute angle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a needle head of the above character wvliei'ein the needles make direct contact with each other and the engaging surfaces are slabbed so that the two needles when clamped to the needle head will not only have their eyes properly positioned relative to each other but also relative to the needle head. i
A still further object of the invention is to provide a needle head of the above type which is adapted to support independently a series of pairs of needles.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention:

The invention resides broadly in a needle head for supporting a plurality of needles. The needle head is provided in the bottom portion thereof with a recess which is of uniform width and which is considerably longer than its width so as to receive a plurality of needles. The recess is inclined to the transverse axis of the needle head so as to properly set the needles whereby a single looper can cooperate therewith. The needle shanks make and are slabbed at their engaging surfaces. The slabbed faces coming in contact with each other will position the needles properly relative to each other and the two needles as a unit in the recess will be properly positioned on the needle head.
The needle shanks are clamped in the recess by a single set screw which is in a line passing centrally longitudinally of the recess, and this set screw clamps the two a needle head direct contact with each other 1927. Serial No. 198,541.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, there is shown a needle bar 1 carrying a needle head 2, which in the present embodiment of the invention is provided with three pairs ofneedles 3, 3; 3, 3 and 3 3 The needles are all similar in construction.
At the lower portion of the needle head 2 there is a transverse recess or groove 4 which extends all the way across the needle head. Located in this groove or recess is a needle supporting block 5. The block is provided with a transverse groove 6 which engages the pin 7 mounted in the needle head. A screw 8 is threaded through the needle head and against the block. This holds the block in place in the needle head. The block is provided with a series of recesses 9, 10 and 11, one recess for each pair of needles. This recess extends from the front edge of the block in a direction inclined to the transverse axis of the needle head and terminates in the block so as to provide a rear wall 12 for each recess.
The needles 3, 3 are each provided with a slabbed face 13, and these slabbed faces are placed in contact with each other, and the pair of needles thus nested are placed in the recess 9. The slabbed faces of the needles will prevent the needles from turning one relative to the other and this insures that the eyes of the needles will be properly set so that a single looiper can cooperate with the one pair of needles. The recess which receives the needles is of a width corresponding to the full diameter of the needle. The recess however is long enough to receive both needles. When the needles are nested one against the other and'placed in the recess the recess will determine the angular setting of the needles relative to the line of feed and the looper which cooperates with the needles.
The needles 3', 3 are similarly slabbed and similarly nested in the recess 10. The needles 3 3 are likewise similarly slabbed and nested in the recess 11.
There is an independent clamping screw 14 in the needle head for each recess. The axis of the screw is disposed in the longitudinal center line of the recess and when the screw is turned in it may be brought to bear against the adjacent needle centrally thereof and will force the other needle the pairs of needles not only relative to the I head but also relative to each other.
The front face of the needle head is provided With grooves 15 for the heads of the clamping screws. The inner faces of these grooves are substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the recess.
At the extreme lower edge of the needle head and spanning said grooves 15 is a bar 16. This bar is connected at its ends to the needle head. The needle threads are guided in rear of this bar, the grooves 15 providing spaces for the threads.
It is of course obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention as i set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1- 1. The combination of a needle bar, a
needle head carried thereby, said needle head having a plurality of recesses formed in the lower portion thereof, said recesses being spaced and having their longitudinal aXes parallel and set at an acute angle to the transverse axis of the needle head, a pair of needles in each recess, said needles hav ing their adjacent faces slabbed and in contact, said recess being substantially of the maximum diameter of the shank of a needle, and a clamping screw associated With each. recess and carried by said needle head, said clamping screw being located in the longitudinal center line of the recess and adapted to clamp one needle against the other and the needles as a unit against the end Wall of the recess.
2. The combination of a needle bar, a needle head carried thereby, said needle head having a plurality of recesses formed in the lower portion thereof, said recesses being spaced and having their longitudinal axes parallel and set at an acute angle to the transverse axis of the needle head, a pair of needles in each recess, said needles having their adjacent faces slabbed and in contact, and a clamping means associated With each recess for clamping the needles as a unitagainst the end Wall of the recess.
