ROGELIO VOCERO, OF CIEGO DE AVILA, CUBA.
SCOT-COLLECTING APPARATUS.
Application filed May 29, 1928, Serial No. 281,562, and in Cuba March 23, 1928.
This invention relates to the collection of the soot carried along by the smoke issuing from the chimneys, whatever its class, and its object is to provide an apparatus of new and improved construction for absorbing the soot carried by the smoke that goes to discharge in the atmosphere, avoiding the falling down of same and thus filling the requirements of the sanitary ordinances for chimneys on industrial stores within the suburban limits of towns.
The invention is described with reference to the figures of the enclosed drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus which is the subject matter of this invention.
Fig. 2 is an upper plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the apparatus on the line 33 of 2.
4 is a detail, showingin diametral vertical sertion, the upper portion of" the chimney or". the apparatus, showing the cleaning device for scraping the soot in its uppermost position.
And Fig. 5 is a detail in horizontal section, on the line 55 of 4.
This apparatus comprises a box in the form of a rectangular parallelepiped 1, made of iron plate with the angles reinforced by angular plates 2, and having its bottom 3 in the form oi an inclined plane, with a tilt higher than 37 so that the soot may slide easily over same towards its lowermost end, where there is installed a funnel or channel 4 discharging into a drawer or box 5 which preferably is removable by means of sliding guides 6. Instead of this drawer or box 5, a descending tube may be used for carrying the soot thus deposited to a point below the floor where the apparatus is located. The box 1 is supported, on its lowermost end, by means of two short metallic uprights 7 and on its uppermost end by means of a metallic supporting frame 8 that is tied to the bottom of the box by means oi two iron plate braces 9.
The inner space of the box 1 is divided into two compartments by means of a division plate 10, which descends from the upper portion to a certain distance from the inclined plane 3 formed by the bottom, in order to form a restricted passage for the smoke arriving at the box, the inlet of such smoke being effected by means of a curved tube made of iron plate 11, discharging into an opening 12 made in the upper part of the compartment 18, said tube 11 being the end of the chimney 14 that carries the smoke from any furnace or hearth where coal is used as a fuel. In the upper part of the other compartment 15, which is of less depth than compartment 13, is mounted a chimney tube of iron plate 16, passin through an opening formed in said upper part, said chimney tube extending down a certain distance below said upper part, in order to force the smoke to come in contact with said upper part before entering said chimney tube 16. The tube 16 has on its upper edge a reinforcing ring 17 of angular section, from which projects laterally a bracxet 18 on which is rotatably mounted a hinged cover 19 that serves to. cover the chimney tube 16 when the apparatus is inoperative, said cover. 19 having a short arm 20 to which is tied a rod 21, the lower end of which ends in a handle or hold 22 at a convenient height for easy handling. Within the chimney tube 16 and on its upper end are fixedly placed two parallel cross bars 23 that support rotatorily between them a vertical sheave 2% that serves as a guide for a chain or cable 25 going out through a slot or cut 26 made in the wall of said tube 16 and then downward on the outside, being guided by another sheave 27, rotatably mounted in a supporting piece 28 fixed to the wall of said tube 16, said eablc or chain 25 carrying on its end a globe formed by three metallic rings 29, 29 and 29", in planes perpendicular to each other, two vertical and one horizontal, of which the horizontal one has adhered to it a brush or scraper of wire bristles 30, the outside diameter of which is approximately equal to the inner diameter of the chimney tube 16 and in the lower part of the vertical rings 29, 29 is suspended a counterweight 31.
One of the side walls of the box 1 has an opening that is closed by means of a hinged door 32 that is held in the closed position by means of closure latches 33 and the object of which is to allow an ocular inspection of the inside of the box as well as the cleaning of same when this is necessary.
The outside end of the cable or chain 25 is tied to a hook or staple 34 fixed on the outside of the box 1, so that in the stressed position of the chain or cable 25, the globe formed by the three rings 29, 29' and 29 is held hanging at a height lower than the inunderstood that it can be installed anywhere and at any convenient height.
The operation of the apparatus is as fol.-
lows: the smokecharged or saturated with soot coming from any furnace or hearth where coal or other fuel is used, enters the compartment 18 of box 1, arriving to same via the chimney 14 and through the curved tube 11, and within said compartment 13 it is forced to descend through to the division plate 10 to pass through the passage formed between the lower edge of same and the inclined bottom 8, and upon the smoke striking against said division plate 10 and bottom 3, a part of the soot carried by same is deposited upon the bottom 3 and then the smoke goes upward through the other compartment 15 of the box 1 and to the upper part, but due to the downwardly extending lower end of the chimney tube 16, the smoke is forced to descend in order to enter this tube, said retroc ession favoring the precipitation of another portion of the soot carried by the smoke upon the bottom 3. The smoke going upwards through the chimney tube 16 deposits the remainder of the soot therein so that a layer of soot is formed in said tube the thickness of which may vary according to circumstances.
The soot deposited upon the inclined bottom 3 passes downward along same on account of its own weight and falls through the funnel or channel 4 into the drawer or box 5, being collected there or being left to fall through a downward tube that not shown, to a convenient storage place.
hen the tube 16 needs to be cleaned, the chain 25 manually operated to move the cleaning globe upwardly and downwardly in said tube, said globe scraping the soot from the inner side of the wall of the tube and the said soot drops on the bottom 3 and by its own weight or gravity slides downwardly thereon and through the opening 1 into the drawer or box 5, where it is collected.
It is obvious that the form of the box and the constructional details of same and of the apparatus for cleaning the chimney tube may be varied, without thus altering the es sential character of the invention, which is as hereinafter claimed.
What I claim is 1. A soot collecting apparatus comprising a closed box having an inclined bottom, a division plate that descends from the upper part of the box to a certain distance from the bottom and divides the box into compartments, an inlet tube for the smoke in the upper part of one of the compartments and a chimney tube in the upper part of the other compartment.
2. A soot collecting apparatus comprising a closed box having an inclined bottom, a division plate that from the upper portion of the box descends to a certain distance from the bottom and divides the box into two compartments of unequal depth, an inlet tube for the smoke in the upper portion ofthe deeper compartment and a chimney tube in the upper portion of compartment of less depth.
3. A soot collecting apparatus comprising a closed box having an inclined bottom, a division plate that descends from the upper portion of the box to a certain distance from the bottom and divides the box into two compartments of unequal depth, an inlet tube for the smoke in the upper portion of the deeper compartment and a chimney tube in the upper portion of the other compartment of less depth, said chimney tube having a lower inlet end extending downwardly to a certain distance within the box, in order to cause smoke to be deflected downwardly in order to enter in the chimney tube.
4. A soot collecting apparatus comprising a closed box having an inclined bottom, a division plate that descends from the upper portion of the box to a certain distance from the bottom and divides the box into two compartments, a soot collector located in the lower end of the bottom, an inlet tube for the smoke in the upper portion of the deeper compartment and a chimney tube in the upper portion of the other compartment of less depth, this chimney tu e havii a at its end an inlet portion to a certain distance within the box to cause smoke to be deflected downwardly in order to enter the chimney tube.
In witness whereof I atlix my signature.
ROGELIO voonao.
