IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LAND-ROLLERS-AND GRASS-SEEDERS.

To all whom it may concern Y Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. DoM- LING, of Ida, in the county of Monroe and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Land- Roller and Grass-Seeder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a top plan View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached plan View of the hind roller, with its connections and supports. Fig. 4. is a plan view of the under side of the seed-box Fig. 5, a top view, and Fig. 6 a sectional end view, of the same. Figs. 7 and 8 are detached views of the sectional boxes.
This invention has relation to combined seeders and rollers; and the object is to simplify the construction of such class of machines, and, at the same time, insure its perfectoperation in the process of seeding and rolling the earth; and the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of the different parts composing the machine, hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, A A B are designed to represent the hollow cylindrical rollers of my improved machine, which may be constructed of strips a, bolted or otherwise secured around an annular skeleton metal frame, I), forming the ends of said rollers, and through the center of which pass shafts projecting out from the ends of the frames 1) to form short axles c. The rollers A A are supported by downwardly-curved arms d, the upper ends of which are rigidly secured upon the under side of a transverse frame, 0. These arms 61 have elongated slots 0 for the reception of sectional boxes D, through which the ends of the axles 0 pass. These boxes, which are considered of great importance in adding to the successful operation of my invention, are of peculiar construction, being composed of two sections, f, and formed with shoulders g to retain them in position within the elongated 'ing in length to the openings 0.
slots 6, and are connected together by bolts f, so that as fast as the axles 0 become worn the sections of the boxes may be brought closer together aroundthe axles, and thereby prevent the continual jarring and consequently rapid wearing of the axles. The rollers also work much easierwithin the elongated slots,
thereby greatly lessening the draft of the horses, and readily allowing the rollers to pass over and act with equal effect upon the irregularities in the surface of the ground. The curved arms (1, which support the hind roller B, terminate in a central arm, h, said arm bein g pivoted and working within a longitudinal slotted plate or sleeve, E. The sleeve is bolted to the under side of the frame 0, and acts as a brace and support for the arm 71 The pivoted arm h, as will be seen, allows the roller B to move sidewise, and rolls the earth between the space formed by the inner ends of the rollers A A. The frame (J is provided with a hinged seat, F, which also serves as a cover for a receptacle underneath it for the purpose of holding the seed, and upon each side of the seat and receptacle is a box, G, the same being designed for the reception of suitable heavy substance to' give the desired weight and pressure to the machine. The bottom or under side of the frame (J is formed with a plate, 01, to the under side of which are bolted or otherwise secured hounds j, which receive a pivoted tongue, H. The seeder-box I is connected to the hounds j by a bolt or rod, k, passing up through a plate secured to said hounds, the rod It being formed upon its lower end with a ring, is, forming a central support for a grooved roller, 1. The rod 70 is of suflicient length to allow a beam, J, to be attached, the ends of which are provided with rods m, having hooks upon their lower ends to hook into staples it upon each end of the box I. The above manner of connecting the box allows of its being readily removed for repairs or other purposes, or when it is found desirable to use the rollers independent of the seeder. The bottom of the box I has openings 0, over which works and is secured a sliding plate, 1), with a series of four holes, q, and a space between each series correspond- The sliding plate works in a groove in the bottom of the I covers 8, which may be locked in position over the box by a bolt and staple or other suitable means. The grooved roller I has its bearings in the ends of the box I, the roller at its ends having axles t, upon one end of which is secured a spur-wheel, u, and upon the axle c of one of the rollers A, a similar wheel, 0, somewhat larger in size. The shaftsor axles c t are retained in proper line with each other by a brace, '10, and are removably'secured to said axles by suitable pins or keys passing through the ends thereof. Motion'is communicated to the wheel at by an endless chain, y, the teeth upon the wheels fitting within the links composing the chain. Thereby a continuous rotary motion is imparted to the roller 1 as the landrollers A A pass over the ground, continually agitating the seed contained in the box I, and preventing it clogging up the openings in the sliding plate 19.
Having now fully described the construction of mv invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a combined roller and seeder, the combination of the rollers A A B, curved arms d, with elongaged slots 0, and the sectional boxes D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the rollers A and curved arms (2, formed with elongated slots 0, of the spur-wheels o and u, and brace w and endless chain y, with the seeding-box I, grooved roller Z, and perforated plate 1), substantiall as and for the purpose set forth.
