MASSAGING AND STIMULATING IMPLEMENT Filed June 27, 1927 ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 20,- 1929.
HERMANN KRAU'IER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PATENT OFFICE.
MASSAGING AND STIMULATING IMPLEMENT.
Application filed June 27,
My invention relates to massaging and stimulating implements or devices and has particular relation to implements or devices for massaging the face, as described and claimed forexample in my co-pending applicttion Serial No. 190,614, filed May 11, 192
The general object of my invention is to provide a novel massaging implement or device of the character indicated, which includes a hollow massaging and cream or lotion-applying bulb or head which is adapted to be filled with a heating or cooling medium for heating or cooling the same, as
may be desired in the use of the said imple-- ment or device.
Another object of my invention is to providea novel massaging and stimulating device which includes a hollow massaging head or bulb, the said device being provided with means for connecting the said head or bulb thereto, which means is adapted to permit the said head or bulb to be filled with a heating or cooling medium, as may be de-' sirable or necessary.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel construction of means of the above character which comprises a cup' ping and massaging element, a vacuum-creating device .for producing a condition of vacuum in the said element, and which also includes a hollow massaging head or bulb adapted to be filled with a heating or cooling medium.
.Italso is an object of my invention to provide a novel implement or device for'massaging and stimulating the skin whichcomuses a handle portion having a socket ormed in a part thereof, the wall of which 4 socket is provided with openings, a hollow massaging head or bulb being adjustably connected in the said socket, whereby upon outward adjustment of the said head or bulb with respectto the said socket the said head or bulb may be filled with a heating or coolconnected means for producing a vacuum,
ing medium by immersing the said device in 1927. Serial No. 201,713.
the other end of the said member being branched to provide a couple of laterally and oppositely extending members, the ends of which are provided with sockets, a ,bupping and massaging element being connected in the socket of one of the said members and a hollow massaging and cream or lotionapplying member being connected in the socket of the other of the said members, the said hollow massaging and cream or lotionapplying member being adapted to be filled with a heating or cooling medium.
Other advantages and objects from a practical standpoint will be pointed out in the description which follows or willbecome apparent from such description.
In order to readily understand the invention and the principle thereof, reference may be hadto the accompanying drawing, in which I have illustrated several forms of embodiment thereof. But'it is to be understood that the invention is susceptible of being embodied in other forms of construction than those shown and that changes in the details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the principle of the said invention.
In the said drawing: Fig. l is a view in vertical sectional elevation of a massaging implement or device embodying the invention. in its preferred form; 0
Fig. 2 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. l but showing a modified construction embodying the invention; Fi 3 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 2 but showing a modified construction of the implement or device shown in vFig. 2;
Fig. 4, which also is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 2, shows a modified construction of the im lement or device shown in said Fig. 2; an B -Fig; 5 is a view of the implement or device shown in Fig. 4, the said view being taken in a longitudinal plane extending throu h the line 5-5 of the said figure and at rigfimt angles to .the plane in which the 100 view shown in the said figure is taken.
Referrin to Fig. 1 of the drawing, I have shown a evice embod 'ng the invention which comprises a bulb 1 preferably of to which the bulb 1 is attached is branched to form a couple of laterally and-oppositely extending members or branches 3 and 4.
The member or branch 3, which is tubular, extends or may extend at practically a right angle with .respect to the member ,2, while the solid member 4 extends or may extend at an angle slightly greater than a right angle with respect to the member 2, as. shown, preferably intersecting the greater angle between the members 2 and 3. The purpose of the angular relation of the mem-. bers 2, 3 and 4 'to each other will be pointed out hereinafter. But it will be understood that the various members or branches of the device may be arranged in such diverging angular relation to each other as may be desired. These branches or members may be constructed. of metal. The member or branch 3 is provided with a socket 5 in its Y tight joint.
outer end with which the nipple 6 formed on the cup-shaped element 7 has screwthreaded engagement. This cup-shaped member or element consists of glass and may be described as a cupping element. A
rubber gasket 8 is or may be inserted between the inner end of the nipple .6 and the bottom ofthe socket 5 to form a fluid The branch or member 4 also is provided with a socket 9 in its outer end with which the outer end portion of the tubular stem 10 ofthe hollow bulb or head 11 has screw-threaded engagement, as shown. The wall of the socket 9 is provided with openings 12, which openings are located intermediate the ends of the said socket.
The bulb or head 11 consists of glass and has a relatively flat smooth surface formed thereon whereby the said head or bulb is adapted for applying massage cream or the like to the skin. By adjusting the said head or bulb outwardly with respect tothe socket 9 until the'openings 12 are uncovered and then immersing the head or bulb 11 andthe openings 12 in a liquid heating or cooling medium the latter will-then flow through said openings and thence into the sa-idbulb.
The said medium may be sealed or retained in the head or bulb by adjusting the latter element by depressing or collapsing the saidv bulb and subsequently releasing/the same in known manner. T
My novel massaging implement is particularly intended to be employed in performing handle for manipulating the said massaging 1 head or bulb. As a result of such treatment the heat of 'the massaging bulb or head causes the cream or the like to become more or less fiuid, thereby enabling the same to enter freely the pores of the skin, the latter being caused to open by the heat imparted thereto by the said massaging head or bulb. As stated before, the cream or the like should be applied by working the bulb or head with a circular massaging movement, and when the skin is treated in such manner the for eign matter and the like which may be present therein or thereon become loosened from the said skin. Subsequently the skin is subjected to the effect of vacuum and is'massaged by placing'the cupping element of the device in contact with the skin, creating a vacuum therein by depressing and releasing the bulb 1, and manipulating the device with circular massaging movements. The vacuum which thus is created in the cupping element removes the'cream or the like together beoccluded thereby from the skin, thereby cleansing the) latter, while the massaging treatment generally tends to increase the circulation of the ,blood and otherwise t improve the condition of the skin. 1
From the foregoing it will become appar ent'that the cupping element and the massaging head or'bulb are practically indispensable to each other in carrying out applicants novel method of massaging and treat- 'ing the skin.
As will be understood, the bulb 11 may be filled with a cooling medium, such as cold 'water or ice, and when so filled may be employed for ,chilling or cooling the skin.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a modified construction of device embodying one feature of with foreign matter and the likewhich may the invention. The said construction comprises a handle -15 having a socket 16 formed in the lowerend thereof, the socket wall be-- ing provided with a plurality of o enin'gs 17 located intermediate the ends 0 the said socket. The tubular stem 10 of the hollow massaging head or bulb- 11 has screwthreaded engagement with the-socket 16, as
is clearly shown in the said figure. The use and operation of this form of construction of the invention will be apparent from the foregoing description of Fig. 1.
collar 21, which collar and the exterior of the neck or stem portion of the bulb, 11 are of practically the same diameter. The said handle also is provided with a reduced extension which terminates in a head 22 which serves to retain the rubber plug or sleeve on the said extension in contact with the bottom side of the collar 21. The plug or sleeve 23 has openings or recesses of V- shape formed therein. Consequently when I the plug or sleeve is partly withdrawn from the neck or stem of the bulb 11 the said bulb maybe filled with a liquid heating or cooling medium by dipping or' immersing the device in ,the said medium. The collar 21 serves to limit the extent to which the sleeve 23 may be inserted into the neck of the bulb 11.
It now will be seen that I have provided means of novel construction which may be employed for beautifying the skin and improving the condition thereof. A device constructed according to my invention is efficient in use and may be manufactured economically.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
